Default New member - travelling September 2010

Hi there.
I stumbled across this site and read a few of the posts and thought I would register and pop a quick message on here.
Only booked last night to go to Cancun on 7th September 2010, for 2 weeks. It will be myself travelling and 3 other lads, all aged 25 from Cardiff in Wales, UK. Anyone else there for this time? We have booked into the Oasis Cancun.
I have been to Cancun once before, but I was only 16 at the time and although I got a bit of an experience of some of the nightlife, I don't think it was as much as I will be getting this time.

Hopefully I will get a few replies to this, of people travelling the same time and/or people who have stayed at the Oasis.

When I was over before, the only club/bars I remember going to are Dady-O's and Senor Frogs.
Are Coco Bongos and The City that good? What type of music do they play?

Also, what currency should I take? American dollars and any local currency? Thanks

Sorry I meant Coco Bongos is a must!!! Never actually went to the City but so many people raved about it that Im going to make sure I go this year. Did Bongos twice, amazing night, all sorts of music from tribute acts, the film soundtracks and then dance music when all the entertainment over which is very very late! Yes Dady-Os and Frogs still there, do good cocktails.

We took peso's last year, didnt bother with dollars. Dont think they mind either but thought seeing as us english have got to change money anyway we might as well take the local stuff!

Bummer about the flights in england right now - Id be gutted if it were me! It better not happen in june!

Question Am going in September 2010 (Worried)

Hello,
I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts about the weather forecast for Cancun September 2010. I am 23 years old and this will be my second vacation to Cancun. I was reading into the weather for September 2010 (after I bought my vacation package) and apparently hurricane season was mild last year but this year it is going to be one of the worst hurricane seasons in the last 10 years! I will be purchasing inssurance so if there is a hurricane predicted before I leave I will be reembursed, but I was just wondering what do you do if there is a hurricane while you are down there? I am just a little freaked out and I was wondering if someone, ANYONE could put my mind at ease! If the weather holds up I know I will have an awesome time but if it doesn't....................well you could imagine................................. ....................................any thoughts, I just want to feel more safe about going down there. Thanks

Let me ask you a question? How accurate are your local weather forecasters? I know mine in Philly couldn't get a 24hr prediction right, and the Hurricane forecasters are much the same. Don't sweat it. Buy the Insurance and wait it out. I just moved here last October, and we were hit by Ida, which was just two days of heavy rain. I know people were running for the airport to leave, and I laughed at all of them when the sun was shinning Monday morning and they all cut their vacations short. If a Big one is projected, they evacuate, just as they would in the US.
You have a long ways to wait to let this bother you, so relax and plan your great vacation.

Coco Bongos sounds brilliant! All I have been doing for the last two weeks since booking the holiday is look up as much about all the clubs etc on the internet. Don't want to have to wait the four months until we go out! And Steph you do seem right about taking the pesos and there not being any need to get American dollars, thanks for the tip.

In reply to the poster about hurricanes...When I went to Cancun before it was in September, the weather was brilliant. We had one day where it rained a lot and had high winds, but it didn't stop us going out at all and we still went to downtown for the night! As Tori said, the weather can be predicted for the rest of today, how could they ever forecast 4 months away!

Hey Wales and Sexy,

It is way too early to start worrying about the weather in September. It will be what it will be. You could find out historical data for the month but, as Tori implies, it is more or less meaningless in terms of what will really happen.

Coco Bongos and The City are newer and bigger than Dady O's but they all will rock you. Sr. Frogs is a place you will want to go but totally different than the others mentioned.

Right now the US Dollar is pretty weak against the peso. My opinion, and I exchange money all the time, is to wait as historically, the Dollar gets more valuable. It could be like the weather though but the trend is there. I would NOT bring pesos from Europe unless you can buy them for less than you can here, on a given day. Today, the bank rate in Cancun, and you can track this at www.banamex.com.mx is $11.95 Mxn for $1 USD. It has been hovering around $12 to $1 for a couple of weeks. Two months ago it was about $13 to $1. $1 GBP is at $18.49 Mxn today. DO NOT convert GBP to USD to MXN as you basically just pay two "commissions" that way and it is not necessary. Do the math and you will see.

The exchange rates in the hotels vary from hotel to hotel but are comparable to the bank rates. The rates at the little exchange booths, a Casa de Cambio, are a little worse than bank rates but more convenient and faster. The Banamex website rate is current to within 25 minutes, LIVE AND IN COLOR, AT THE LOCAL CANCUN, ALL OF MEXICO REALLY, BANAMEX BANKS. There are other websites out there with foreign exchange rates but rarely are they "real life rates" here in Cancun. Banamex is the real deal.

Odds are against a hurricane but expect both sun and rain during the fall months.

I know you guys are 25 and all about the party but in two weeks you have a lot of time. Please come downtown, to Avenida Yaxchilan, and there is a whole street full of clubs, smaller than most in the Hotel Zone, but fun nonetheless. Lots of live music. Lots of locals, both English and Spanish speaking, lots of tourists exploring. Totally safe. Also, take a tour or two and see our culture and history. Click on the Entertainment Plus black and yellow logo at the bottom of this page and see the many choices of their services, from transportation to and from the hotels and the airport, to the ruins in Chichen Itza and Tulum, to the Eco parks Xel Ha and Xcaret, jungle tours, zip lines and more. A day trip by boat to "the island" Isla Mujeres is a fun, lazy and easy day. The beaches are beautiful, you can tool around on 4 person golf carts or mopeds, and food and drink are reasonable.

Enjoy your holiday. Remember to tip your servers. They make basically nothing in salary and need tips to survive. The culture here in that regard is far different than yours.

Best thing to do re money is to bring your ATM card and use it to withdraw money as and when you need it. Pesos are usually better, if you use dollars you'll get shafted on the exchange rate much of the time.

Make sure you let your bank know you'll be using your card in Mexico so it doesnt get blocked and check what the charges are. Even though the charges may seem expensive you'll cover their cost by getting a better rate and if you were to exchange cash in the UK for pesos you'd pay charges anyway.

They might be the real deal, but they wont exchange dollars any more, nor even allow them to be paid into your bank account!

Steve, can you shed some light on this. We were at the bank on Saturday, and the BF gets his tips and commissions in UDS..he went to have them deposited into his account and they said we don't accept uds anymore...WTF is that all about? Again, this place we call home was created for the US tourist, and now the banks don't take their currency anymore. I thought it had to do with the election and it would go back to normal. I guess not?!?

Cant really shed any light I'm afraid - presumably it's to do with money laundering. All I know is that we often used to take Dollars to the bank for exchange to Pesos. Then they stopped that and said you had to pay it into your account first and withdraw Pesos via the ATM, which wasnt too much of a problem since it went through immediately. But now they dont even allow that.

The only way round it is to have a Dollar account with the bank.

Will start a new thread in Life in Cancun.

Alright mate....seen your post and thoought I would reply. We fly on the 31st of August pal. Going for 2 weeks so you arrive just as our 2nd week is starting. Hopefully by then, should no best places to go.

I have been advised to take pesos but the hotel waiters prefer dollars. Loads of clubs to go to though as my mate has updated me.

He has been twice in the last 2 years in September and had 1 hour of rain each time!!

Getting excited now....only 2 of us though as 2 more backed out.

Staying in the Gran Caribe resort.

Yea my advice would be just bring your bank card, I brung Pesos but got a very good rate in England. You will love it, like mentioned make sure you check out Downtown to as in my opinion the hotel zone gets very annoying after a short time.

The weather has been a trillion times better then alright. It's freakin sunny, HOT and amazing. I think this week, there may have been two or three 10 min showers in the HZ. Guests were actually complaining of it being too hot. (people are never happy)
If you are talking about showers, just bank on a 10 min shower ever day. The hotel will not nor will they know of any showers before you do. Keep an eye to the ocean cause that is where it comes from. Yesterday, it showered at the hotel I was at and it didn't at one three away. It's all hit or miss.
BTW.. you can tan and burn in 10-20 min here....even on a cloudy day.
