If anyone is in Walmart, would you check for me please to see if they carry the rice milk? I am allergic to cow's milk and we will be there 3 months. Thanks.

I have never seen it and I remember someone else looking for it and not finding it. I will look next time I am at the store. Horchata is made from rice milk, I think.

Old Guy,
Is it canned and on the shelves at room temperature or in the cold section? I just got home from Walmart but did not see your post till now.

Cancun Fun is always at the grocery looking for ingredients to drum up some delicacy. If it is there you will know soon.

A couple of years ago I was looking for baking soda, normally in the baking section of groceries. Could not find it anywhere. Called CF and was told to look in pharmacy, with actual aisle and row included in the directions.

Old Guy,

Probably not the problem but Walmart has several varieties of Lactose Free Milk. Called Deslactsada in Spanish.

Smile Rice Milk

To everyone who answered - Thanks for all your help. I don't know how to reply individually yet. Can't remember how we did it.

Walmart didn't carry the rice milk in Cancun when we were there in 2006 but since they started carrying it in Canada and Florida, I was hoping they had added it to their shelves in MX too.

It comes in tetra packs and is just on the shelves. In Canada all they have is the travel size of 240 ml in Walmart. In other supermarkets here I can get both 1 litre and 2 litre sizes. In FL, Walmart carried only the 2 litre size with the 1 litre size found in health food stores.

I looked up Horchata online and there is a recipe for it but I bet there is some made up in the stores in Cancun since it seems to be a Mexican food. I can always buy a blender and make my own rice milk, I guess, but the store one can be enriched with calcium.

My husband is lactose intolerant so Deslactsada might be good for him, but I am sensitive to the casein in cow and goat milks. I can get away with it once in a 'blue moon' but it sneaks up on me if I have it more often than that.

I didn't find any health food stores in Cancun in 2006 except for a juice place in La Isla. Any new ones? I'm supposed to eat organic food but it is not always possible, especially if I want to go to Cancun. :-)

Maybe there is canned coconut milk which I can have??

Are there two Walmarts there now and is there one in the hotel zone? Online on one website it said there were three but on the other website it said two. We couldn't find a map with the street names on it.

Thanks again. We are excited about Cancun again. It should be a lot better thsi time as we were there the February after the 'Big' hurricane and we still had a great time!

There are 3 but NONE is the HZ. One, we call it the "Tourist Walmart," in on Xcaret, is an R-2 bus ride and stops a block away.

Walmart 2 is on Andres Quintana Roo, which is the name of Blvd Kukulcan, which becomes Coba downtown, which becomes AQR after Kabah, where Soriana is on the far right corner. There are several Sorianas in town too.

The newest Walmart is at Gran Plaza, which is on Nichupte, about a mile west of Kabah.

More than likely, if Walmart has it, they all will have it.

Here is the deal.

Walmart has the horchata mix for $22.50 on aisle 9. 700 ml mixed with 6 parts water to one part mix. This yields over 5 quarts so is the cheapest option. And this stuff is tasty to most, including me. I buy the mix and I have made it from scratch. Mix is easier.

I wanted some eggs last night and headed to Soriana and decided to check their stock. They have Soy Milk in 2 brands as well as a Rice Milk Drink. All organic stuff and stamped USDA Organic, for what that is worth. Side by side on aisle 4. Oh yeah, some vitamins are added and CALCIUM enriched. About $40 per quart, yes, not in a liter box, so very costly. But how much can you possibly drink, right?

You can get to Soriana on the R-2 bus (same as Walmart) but 2 lights after Walmart, where it turns right. Jump off at the turn as Soriana is across the street and impossible to miss.

Both take up to $50 bills and both have a great exchange rate, Walmart was $12.93 yesterday and I cannot find my Soriana receipt but it would be close. If you split your order at Walmart you can exchange more money and get more pesos in change at a far better rate than you can on the street. Soriana will not give you more change than the amount of your purchase. So, say the rate is $13 to $1, if you want to pay with a $50, that is $650 pesos, so you MUST buy $325 worth of stuff, or use a smaller bill or bills.

If you have more specifica questions you are free to send me a Private Message.

I hope this helps.

Default Cocunut milk

Canned coconut milk, which we don't drink but my wife uses when she makes Thai food, can be found in all the major supermarkets, here. Cancun just gets better and better!
