| Just heard bout something like 13 peeps got shot in CC. Is that atypical? I was thinking crime was pretty low. Also wanting to take a trip to Chichen Izta, would it be better to take the bus or rent a car? I'm a pretty safe and reliable driver, but read that some police will sometimes pull tourists over, and judge, jury, and fine right there on the spot.

| I hate to sound stupid, since I live here. But what do you mean by CC? There was 12 taxi drivers killed in Acapulco...waaay over on the other side of the Country. |

| The latest news was from Acapulco, 13 killed, 1455 kms/904 miles away. As far as going to Chichen, I highly recommend taking a tour. It's not your driving, it's everyone else's. Going with the tour you are in a big, safe bus, certainly safer than the tiny rental cars you might get. Plus, most tours include food, drinks and guides, can be more economical in the long run when you add up gas, tolls, etc..

| Definitely do not drive. The round trips tolls are over $700, about $60 US. Gas in an economy car would be close to $40 US. The main reason to consider driving wouild be if you have a rental car anyway and have like 4 people to "allocate" the travel costs among. Tours are great as Canuck describes. Click on the Entertainment Plus link at the bottom of this page. Another option would be to take the ADO bus fromt the downtown bus station. This would be the cheapest way to go probably. Then you can hire a guide to give you the tour. No worry about finding a guide. They will find you about 1.2 seconds after you get off the bus. Long ago I heard a guide say, maybe even to me, "Without a guide you are pretty much just looking at a pile of rocks." Hmmm. Take a backpack and some bottled water and lots of sunscreen.

| Tori B. My bet is CC = Can Cun, which I have seen it written from time to time, with the accent over the "u". On the Acapulco thing the article I read said 10 taxi drivers and one taxi had 3 passnegers who were also killed. The locations were random but my guess is that the victims were not. The cartels are alive and well protecting and acquiring their turf.

| Must admit, I agree with the statement about the guide. The guides I've had have made my trips worthwhile, extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the site. These are not just some guys doing a day job, they study long and hard to get certified and know their stuff inside and out. I went to Chichen this past Saturday for the third time this year and was thrilled to see my favourite guide Delio. He makes piles of rocks fascinating.
