Stayed at Dreams and GR Solaris about three months apart. The food and service at dreams is much much better than GR Solaris. The rooms and facilities are equal. Those who are part of a GR Solaris club get private dining and beach parties that the regular guest can not participate in. No way I would rate GR Solaris above a three star resort. Also stayed at Riu Palace Mexico and it was much much better than GR as well. I will not stay at GR again and I am not one of those who can not be pleased easily because I was more than happy at Dreams and Riu Palace.

The GR is one of my regular resorts when in Cancun and is a smaller AI resort (approximately 300 rooms) by Cancun standards, primarily an over 30 couples resort though families are welcome, features 4 out of 5 star amenities and rooms, and includes the almost legendary Solaris service standards. It's also Mexican owned and operated, has average to above food for an AI and is a relatively newer resort built in the mid-2000's on small to mid-size beach depending on the season et al.

In addition the resort boasts three pools, one an adult, quiet style pool, multiple restaurants, 3-4 times a week shows and an active hotel bar in the evening along with specialty theme parties and dinners.

The resort does need to update their room amenities, furniture and electronics but is still well maintained and more importantly, clean. The resort also has 24 hour room service with a decent menu and is Timeshare/Vacation Club heavy repeater resort like it's older sister resorts at the Royal Solaris/GR Caribe, via the Club Solaris Membership. The resorts usually take very good care of their guests with a debate often whether Club Solaris Members and RCI trades get better service than regular guests; IMHO, they do, generally not noticeable enough to garnish attention but Club Members do have special dinners, activities, access to top shelf booze and room amenities.

Over the years, I've stayed at many Cancun resorts and while the GR isn't the Ritz, she's a very safe choice when choosing a quality place to stay in Cancun.

A few tips would be to get to know the lay of the resort on arrival, pay attention to the weekly dinner/activity list, forget the lagoon sports stuff, utilize the separate chefs available at most of the restaurants for ordering meals when available, and to avail yourself of the spectacular service the Solaris resorts are known for.

We stayed at GR in march for spring break. It was also our first trip to cancun so we couldn't really compare it to anything. The staff was wicked friendly, the beach was awesome, as well as the pool area. Drinks were strong if u prefer but there was only one bar open until 12:30 in the lobby, kind of boring. The food was awful, after two days, we stuck to nachos or ate off the resort. The 24hr room service was pretty legit but again, the food was poor. We were there to party so it really wasn't a big deal, we got a free upgrade by booking through hotwire so that was cool. I think you'll have a great time, were heading to temptation in august and cant wait.
