Default Safes Being Broken Into with actual Combo

How much truth is there to this common complaint of Cancun resorts?

I read so many reviews, good and bad and found a common complaint. Safe broken into with the actual combination. I can see it happening but often?

Read a bunch of reviews, safe broken into, resort did nothing. There is a schedule the resort knows who was in that particular builiding doing what, room service, cleaning, building maintenance....

What's the truth behind this? Who has had their in-room safe broken into without force? If so, did the resort do anything about it?

Perhaps no one has ever experienced it to be able to comment. Certainly I've stayed well over 100 nights across many different Cancun hotels and it's never happened to me.

In over 20 years, I have not had a safe problem. Have had some petty theft on things left out. Would suggest that many safes are left unlocked by mistake. How do you prove you locked it and not the thief ?

I found it to be a common complaint when the resort feedback is negative..

Was curious to see if anyone here has had this happen to them.

Temptation was the least expensive resort I found, just doing research, trying to cover all bases, become well informed...

I looked at this question and thought, Huh? I mean think about it. If you walked up to the safe and knew that the combo could be what 3 to six numbers in any combination, what would be your chance of coming up with the exact combo to open it?

So one of three things happened. Either the guest left it open or the front desk brought the override machine and broke in. Or, the burglar has the override machine and is using it.

But anyway you go about it, I may have heard about someone that had their safe "broken into" at BBG/TTR but never have met that person to know or judge the validity of their claim.

Personally it's never happen to me in the 12 years or more than seven months of nights I have spent there.

I agree with Jamie, Ive been there many many times and I personally have never had an issue. I would find it really hard to believe that someone that works there would take that chance to break into a guests safe, Most resort jobs are highly coveted and loosing that job over a "Chance" to steal what may be in a guest safe, probably is not worth it to them. That being said, I have heard of theft in rooms before.. few and far between. As a matter of fact it happened to a friend of mine in 2006, someone went into his room and stole his Digital camera and dvd player... The hotel brought us all down to watch security video once that didnt work, they brought us to the police station to fill out a report and a hotel rep helped him out every step of the way in filing the papers...they then gave him a free weeks stay at the resort.
So I think the hotel goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is safe and taken care of at the resort (within their control) a 5 star Hilton could have it share of thieves and thugs in it also, So I wouldnt worry to much about theft at Temptations in my humble opinion

It is my understanding as an ex Cancun tourist but still a tourist, that the in room safes, if they are NOT operated by a key, have a unique combo that you set yourself. So it is very unlikely that someone could come into your room and try all 10,000 possible combos and get in your safe with the "actual combo." Were someone to drop dead, forget the combo, or whatever, it takes two people to access it in some manner to open and reset it.

I don't think getting robbed from your in room safe is something I would worry about. Nonetheless, you don't need to bring your Rolex and your expensive jewelry.

Don't worry.

Most safes come with a default code of six zeros to open it.... Unfortunately most hotels (Not just in Cancun but US too) dont reset the default code...... So if you type in six zeros it will open the safe. If they reset the defualt code when they install the safe there is no way into it without your code or the default code. If you ever forget your code they will use the default code.... Most of the time they come in an enter six zeros and open the safe. Check it before you leave your valuables in the safe.

I am not saying mikef is wrong but I have never heard of such a thing. I called a friend who is staying at the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach and asked him to try the six zeros thing. After the 4th zero it beeped and said Code Error. He repeated is a couple of times with the same result. I asked him to try 0-0-0-0 and 1-2-3-4 (FAGCB uses for digit pass codes)and neither seem to be a "default code." I would be curious to know a specific hotel where six 0's open the lock.

Just my two pesos worth. Some hotels use those big blocky locks and they hand you a lock and a key when you check in and you turn it in when you leave. They ask you for your lock if you forget it but who could really forget their valuables as they are checking out.

I just stayed at the Me by Melia, and the safe system seems a bit fishy.

You insert your room card, and then the lights flash green and red. during this time you make up a new 4 digit code. lets say 7877. the light flashes green. now press 7877 again, and the safe lock moves. Good.

but 30 mins later, I tried 7877, and no lights came on. my shit was stuck inside...

now I had to call front desk. they send an employee with a safe programmer (like pic but more crude )

anyways, she plugs into my safe, starts scanning, and I then see her try 7877. no lights come up again.... then she resets it... opens it up, unscrews the back panel... replaces 4 AAA batteries and tries it again.

tells me to insert my room card, and do 4 new numbers... it works... for another 30 mins... and my stuff is stuck.

i didnt worry til the next day to get my things out, they then came again and did the same drill, I translated that they already replaced my batteries and something else is wrong. so they brought in another safe... (they are not even bolted down, just heavy and plugged into a wall socket in the back for the wall socket in the safe (so you can charge your phone or laptop in the safe) and they did this with two other Safes until one finally works right and my password works for hours and days after it.

long story short, I saw her scan the first safe, and try my exact password without me saying the numbers to her.

this was the exact safe... i remember the keycard slot and the handle.

Guess this is where my job is to come to the defense of hotel employees. I am at atleast one if not more hotels everyday. And if you could see the security behind the scenes, the last ppl you will ever blame for stealing anything from your room is the staff. Employees, have to check in their phones, (if they are able to even bring them into the hotel), keys, MP3 players, and so on. When they leave, they are all patted down and a hand held metal detector is used. The only place I have not seen this process done is at Temptations. Maybe they do it at heavy shift changes, and I have never been around then.
Your fellow guests are more then likely your biggest threat. So many stores are of those that enter through a sliding glass door on the first floor.

I dont think a resort would be so silly as to keep the default code, prob changed it by now.

Wow, patted down but I can see this being standard practice, tourism depends on the internet and word of mouth...one bad exp can keep several ppl from visiting the same resort, town, Country...

When ppl want to steal they will but good to know that measures are taken to curve such impulsive behaviors.

We have stayed at many different resorts - some with electronic safes, some with keys, a few with safety deposit boxes behind the registration desk. We are in Cancun now and a few days ago had an issue with our safe.....we forgot to lock it!! I guess between hubby and myself we though the other person had closed it. We were down at the pool/beach area all day and when we returned to the room there was a note in the door and one on the bed from the management. Guess this must happen occasionally because the papers were preprinted and stated that the staff had found the safe open and it had been locked by management. We went to the desk and had to sign and show our room key for the safe key. Everything was still in the safe - passports, credit cards, wallets, Iphone, nook, camera and cash. Thank you to the honest employees of Club Regina!! This event could have had a bad outcome but didn't. Lesson learned - ALWAYS remember to lock the safe and take the key!!

I am obsessed with reading reviews on Trip Advisor and such...and also some legal cases that have happened here, and the staff, especially the cleaning staff get most of the blame; and t just isn't happening le that....most of the time.

Something that sticks out most to me was a case about 2 yrs ago, when a 16 was on vacation with her Grandmom from Detroit. Girl ended up going missing and the first person blamed was a poor hotel worker...not the man she befriended and met up with in Cancun. People had the nerve to say that they saw her go out the back (employee only area) and also walk out the front doors with the employee...either scenario cannot...and will not happen.
