Default More on US Dollars in Mexico and the law

I was just doing a casual search and came across this information regarding the Mexican law that I believe was passed in October of 2010 regarding the US Dollar. The information is in AZCENTRAL.com dated November 30, 2010 which is part of Arizona's state paper, The Arizona Republic.

Mexico restricts use of U.S. dollars

From what it says the Mexican government is restricting the use of US Dollars in Mexico. Most of us knew that. In reality, what is actually happening and the law may be different as noted in the article. But I am sure we will see less acceptance of the US Dollar as time goes on. There have been many posts on here about the move to pesos and that you will be better off using pesos because of the poor exchange rate given by most vendors. We don't generally accept pesos here in the US so we really shouldn't expect Mexico to accept our dollars. From reading many of the posts on here for me getting the Bank of America ATM card and getting pesos from Scotiabank or Santander ATM's seems like the best bet.

The information about US Dollars at the airport I found interesting. While I won't be arriving until 7 November I have already ordered some pesos so I will have them before I arrive. I know I will need some for the bus as I will be staying downtown a short distance from the main bus station.

I just thought I would post this information to give others a little more understanding of the law and how it may affect them.

We read this last year and found it very confusing when vacationing in Cancun. We paid for a cruise tour with Pesos and were given change back in USD. We had to take the word of the cashier that we were getting the correct change back. We thought it to be odd. This year we will be going with both currencies and maybe a little Canadian.
