Default Best public beach?

I am heading down to Cancun in December with my wife. We are staying at temptations which I understand doesnt have the best beach in the area. We really are beach people and prefer that to a pool, so can anyone recommend to us where would be a good beach area to go to on a daily basis? We like nice clean waters, lots of beach chairs/umbrellas/cabanas, waitresses that can bring drinks and some music would be nice. Volleyball would be great too!!

Thanks

edit: I am assuming that the hotel beaches are private and need a room key?

jim: I usually go to the beach behind Coco Bongo. Its public, has a beach club(optional of course), beach volleyball, chairs, umbrellas etc.

You can choose calmer water by going towards the concrete pier, or a bit wavy if you stick to where you entered the area.

I snorkel in the calm area, and have seen everything from big turtles, barracudas to sting rays etc., and I mess around with the boogie-board in the other area.

Hey Jim, all the beaches in Cancun are public, however getting to them isn't always easy and obviously you can't use any hotel's chairs etc, but the physical beach in all Cancun is public.

One of my favorite beaches is at the Ambiance Villas Kin-Ha for calm water and behind the City nightclub for waves.

Hope you have a great vacation.

Just a thought here - if you are beach people, why stay at Temptations ? It sounds like you need a resort with a great beach that includes the service you are looking for......as well as beach games, etc.......you wont have a problem finding beautiful beaches, but due to alot of the all-inclusive resorts, you wont be able to partake in drinks, food, etc.

Just my opinion, but wouldn't it be better to find a resort that has everything you are looking for ?

I have never been to Cancun but I am looking for the time when I will. Even though I have heard great things about the beach behind Coco Bongo from my sister who spend her honeymoon there. Jim, I hope you will share your impressions from everything there and I wish you great time!

Rawkus makes a great recommendation. A beautiful beach is Playa Delfines. It has to have the bluest look in all of Cancun. PLUS THEY HAVE JUST ADDED PUBLIC RESTROOMS.

Temptations is located at about km 3.
The beach behind Coco Bongo is between km 9 & 10.
Playa Delfines is between 17 & 18.

From your hotel you just cross the street and catch any but, for $8.5 pesos, about $65 US per person. Going to Coco Bongo you want to get off the bus just after Plaza Fiesta, a large, brightly colored gift shop. The road is divided here so you have to walk through a shopping/dining area to get to the other/beach side of the street.

Playa Delfines is pretty much right after a golf course that runs along way beside the right side of the road. There is a cop shop in the middle of the road and the bus stops about there. This is an elevated part of the island and there is a spectacular view/photo op looking down at the beach.

Mat points out that all beaches are public but the access is not always simple. These recommendations are easy access. Others would require you to walk thru hotel property and their security will stop you unless you are a guest. But if you can get to the sand, you are on federal property that is public.

Enjoy

Playa Delfines is my favorite beach in Cancun, you have to at least stop to take the pic from the deck where the bus stops.
TJ they always had a public bathroom, nice old mexican man watching over it. I always tipped him and gave him a cervesa frio!

Thanks for the comments everyone, I am going to check out each of the beaches/areas recommended. As to why we are going to temptations, we got a deal on the room that was WAY to good to pass. Its the only reason we are even going to Cancun as we didnt plan on a vacation right now but we reserved the room for about $30 a night through my wifes work.

Another fun day would be to do a day trip to either Playa del Carmen or Isla Mujeres. Playa has a huge stretch of beach and 5th AV is an experience in itself. Isla Mujeres Playa Norte is shallow, little to no waves and my happy place....also plenty to see on the island if you rent a golf cart for a couple of hours.

Depends on were you are in the hotel zone, some private some not so private (public). I read that they are having real problems with the beach sand in cancun not just because of hurricanes but because of the development.

We tend to avoid the area around the north end of hotel zone. But matkirk is right about Ambiance Villas Kin-Ha, the beach is pretty sweet there

When we want to romp in the surf, and enjoy an incredible vista on the Hotel Zone beaches and the sea we go to Playa Chac Maal.

For a quiet time on the beach, and a swim in calm waters, we go to the beach just behind the Hotel Casa Maya.

Both are close to Cancun Centro, making them quick and easy for us to get to by bus.

A few beaches in the area have the very fine, white sand that is the best around. The beaches behind the Hotel Casa Maya, and at the Villas Kin Ha are among them.

1. Playa Dolfines is nice for it's view, but not in terms of being a very good and flat beach. It's rather steep by my standards... and no volleyball there.
2. If you want a very nice beach with chairs, service, showers and calm water-then go to Playa Tortugas. It's about 3 km from your Temptations. Just cross the street and take ANY bus. You can swim, snorkel or just lay and relax on the beach. I use to have my swim workouts there when I'm in Cancun, swimming all the way to RIU Caribe and back. Playa Tortugas is located by the Dos Playas Resort.
3. Rent a car and take a day trip to Akumal. That's where you'll find absolutely the best beach, diving, snorkeling and very calms water. Akumal is about 90 km south of Cancun.

PLAYA TORTUGAS????

If that is the beach where Fat Tuesday used to be, it is terrible. The water is not even two feet deep and big boats are docking there so you can smell the fuel and I am sure it is in the water too. It is plain nasty.

Friends wanted to go there a few weeks ago and we promptly left.

TJ, yes, it is Playa Tortugas.
I swim a lot and I find that beach the best for long swims. People use to play beach volleyball there as well.
I don't like HZ beaches (Coco Bongo beach etc). The sea is very rough most of the days and you can't go for a normal swim or snorkel/free dive there. Waves are no fun for me...

Scorpio,
With all due respect, maybe you have not been there in a while. The beach behind the old Fat Tuesday is now terrible. Perhaps you can swim when you get far off shore but toot can go out and out and still are only knee deep. So if you see a guy sitting in the water 100 yards from shore take a wide berth.

TJ, true, it is a shallow beach in the beginning. I use to swim further away from shore and then swim parallel to the shore all the way to RIU Caribe, then do some free diving there and swim all the way back.
Been on this beach less than 1 year ago:-))) I feel comfortable on any beach, even the smallest one, as long as I'm in the Caribbean , Mexican Caribbean)
