Default mariachis, yes or no...

Do you find mariachis annoying or lovable? I generally love them for the first few songs, but then want them to go away.

How about you?

Hey Gabacha! I'm enchanted by mariachis and always love it when they're around. And I love the various decorations on the legs of their pants. It's the first thing I look at when I see a mariachi band. :cdncat:

Gabacha,
Yeah, I totally agree with you. Especially when they expect you to participate with them by playing tambourines, etc. Then it starts to get annoying!

Gabacha - BTW... Just this morning when I was looking for a pic of me for this forum I came across a picture of you and your bf when we went to that all-you-can-drink/eat afternoon deal back when there was a Carlos & Charlie's downtown. Do you remember that?

Gringa, You mean the things that go jingle, jangle? I'm personally mesmerized by the ubiquitous gut hanging over those tight pants. Although I have seen some hotties. I think I spend too much time at Los Arcos...

Oh yes, I remember that...and we went to the school after, right? But the bf wasn't with me at that time!

oh, wait... now that I think about it I'm not sure if that was your bf sitting next to you in the picture. I think it was a friend of that Randy guy who was with us.

Yep, I think we had a party on the terrace after that. (That was a great party terrace. I miss it.)

That did seem to be a cool terrace, although I was drunk and it was dark! I do remember having someone explain to me the shots the color of the flag-sangrita, lime juice, and tequila. Blech!

I second that!

I DO enjoy them, but I have most often heard them while having dinner. I find it rude to talk to my dinner companions while they are playing, so then you are not able to talk to your pals for quite awhile at times. You just sit there and smile while they play.

It's even more special when the restarant has two mariachi's. Not only do they each try to play louder than the other one. When one band takes a break, the other one plays.

Default Absolutely!!! Yes to Mariachis!

We generally base our restaraunt choice on whether or not they will have mariachis there! Mariachis are a must. Of course there are good and so-so, but, you have to give even the mediocre credit fro trying. This is the soul of Mexico!! We warm up for months before our trip down by playing mariachi music here in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin. :P

I love Mariachis.

Last year Jannet hired some in as a surprise for my birthday party at our place. I'd only been in Cancun a month or two and it was something that made a lot to me.

I've got used to them now though, and normally only want them to play if I'm out with special friends or family. Regular meals out it becomes annoying when they crowd round your table and start playing without invite, at 50 pesos a song which some of them charge, not cheap either.

I still voted yes though. BTW for those new here, you can easily set up polls like this one - see the very bottom of the posting window to select a poll and add the options.

I pretty much agree with Steve.

If Danyand I are out for just a normal meal or with some friedns but not for any specail occasion we usally just say thanks but no thanks.

But if it's a special occasion or if we have someone with us who has never been before then it's a nice touch to a special evening.

Other than that they just get in the way of our conversation.

But I did vote yes because I do like them.

I voted yes, though at times they are annoying. I love "Mariachi Corner" on Yaxchilan, I always think they are like hookers on the corner, "Hey baby, wanna song?"

I must admit to having a special hatred for mariachis when I was pregnant. I know, weird, but I almost hissed if they came near me. I'm better now, not so moody.

Canuck, A lot of things annoyed me when I was pregnant too, LOL!!!! I was extra sensitive.

The only time i saw Mariachis in Cancun was at a show at the RPLA. We just watched a little bit of it as we had to get ready to go to the clubs.

But, we hired mariachis here in Florida for my mom's b-day party in May and her and her friends loved it. They all speak Spanish so they were singing along and then they really got into and were dancing and all. It was really nice and fun to watch.

I like them.........better at somebody else's table.

Invariably, they show up at the table with some romantic balad, just at the point where I want to kill my husband over something. Then, I have to smile and pretend we are being so cozy.

I have a thing about anything out of the ordinary happening at my table, that might cause people to look at me longer than I am comfortable with. it seems to bring the whole restaurant into my 3 feet of personal space.

It's like that "crawl in a hole" feeling you get if somebody surprises you with an anniversary, or birthday cake. All those strangers, gawking & laughing, trying to figure out who the celebrant is.

I still voted yes, since I like to watch everybody else getting suckered into the moment.

It all depends on the circumstances...

Once in Colima(My hometown)

It was about 11:30 Pm...

I waited for my wife to fall sleep so I could get out and find a Mariachi Band in the downtown area, they(six of them) followed me all the way to my mother's home and when we got there, they started to play baladas..

I serenated my wife with about 6 songs until she finally got up and showed up by the window..It was a very amazing experience for me and my wife...and My mother of course...she was so proud..

When I am at a Restaurant I usually find it annoying when they show up at your table and start singing, then they start to make you feel like you owed them money...THAT I DON'T LIKE AT ALL..

So..for me it is 50/50 depending on the situation...

I love listening to the mariachi music but I hate when they come to my table. It interferes with our conversation and general enjoyment of our meal. I like my privacy too much. As long as they play on a stage or far away from my table I like them.

Default Mariachis, tanto me gustan

I love 'em.

Two brief encounters:

1. Riding the Aztec Eagle from Nuevo Laredo to Mexico in 1969. Not a real comfy trip but fascinating. At every stop, the local people come on board to sell stuff. Train stops a daybreak at some very small town in desert. I am barely awake. Then, behind me, 3 mariachis blast into song. Wow!
Hey, so what if everyone's asleep -- this is their chance to make some money. Never forget that.

2. Down on Garibaldi Square in Mexico many years later. In a bar. A woman, seated at a table with a couple of guys. She is 50-60, has a few years hard use in her face and demeanor. But she SINGS!!!! OMG!
(pardon the exclamation marks). No, she isn't doing mariachi music,
more like a woman's variety of ranchero, but the mariachis play for her and it's great.[/i]

Default Back to Trova

Hey, what an idea! I actually know a man who has his own trio

and they do serenatas. Why didn't I have them serenade my wife and

sister last time down there? I am a dead loss at romance.

Poppa

The funny part about the Serenata for my wife:

My mom's neighbors came to her the following day asking her who serenated her the night before..

You would know how mexicans are in a very small town, they all know each other..

My Mom had a blast telling people that it was a pretendiente of hers Lol..

She is over 60 years old so you can imagine what people were saying..

El arguende!!

Alex........Mama was not so far fetched. Mature women are so much more mentally free in expressing romance. Over 60 is no longer old. It just looks that way, by the numbers. Think about Tina Turner.

Poppa...........a seranade, or reasonable facsimile, might just be a way to celebrate Momma150's birthday. A few local Mexican restaurants, near here, have Trova, & Mariachi. Make some calls around to see who might have them, near you.
