Top ten safety tips for Spring Break

Some people may not find themselves in these situations, and this also mostly for humors sakes, but based on my last trip here are some tips for mental, emotional and physical safety while in Cancun learned the hard way from my friends and I.

1) Don't mock the Spanish language, you and your buddies might think it's funny and even some of the locals, but overall it's insulting and could get you into some altercations.

2) Don't split up! My brother left the group and ended up leaving with a super hot girl he met at the club, made out with her on the beach and after a while found out that 'she' was a he. Got into a fight with her and left ...got beat up and his camera stolen by her friends and nobody was there to help him.

3) Don't fall in love. People are there for a short time. If you tend to wear your heart on your sleeve, accept that it's just sex, don't expect anything. I got really attached to an Irish guy by the end of my vacation and he did too and we were sad at the end of the week when we had to leave each other.

4) Don't forget to use the toilet before you pass out. Nothing is worse than waking up and realizing you peed your bed or someone else's bed.

5) If you meet some crazy Canadian men and they ask you to give them a golden shower, do it. How often do you ever get asked to do that? It's pretty funny. (I know being Canadian has nothing to do with this but these guys know how to go crazy!)

6) Strive to party hard enough that the people in your hotel give your group a nickname, ours was the Cancun Crashers.

7) No matter how drunk you are, remember that those VIP wrist bands you bought at the hotel or club are basically just for a table and service. This doesn't mean you can hang out with the real VIP's at the club. The prince of Venezuela will try and fight you physically and get you kicked out of the club completely.

8) Do not get drunk and try to climb the palm trees in the middle of the club searching for coconuts, you will get kicked out.

9) Do not annoy the cab driver, he will drive you to the police station without even telling you. My friend was in the jail cell for a night and we had to pay $300 to get him out. He pissed off the cab driver by knocking off the rearview mirror in his cab doing air punching. The mirror easily snapped back on into place but the cab driver demanded money for it anyways, my friend refused to pay him $20 bucks for it due to it being easily fixable, but the police sided with the driver and he was put in jail.

10) Drink absinthe at your own risk!

Most importantly: Have fun! You only live once! and you're only young once!

Once my lady friend got too drunk and was hugging the toilet. I really had to pee but she refused to move aside even a little. She kept on telling me 'just go, just go' while her head was pretty much covering the toilet.

and actually, I don't know what exact country the man was a prince from, I just know the security guard told us he was a prince and was mad at my brother for entering his VIP area, that he wanted him out of the club. We had to leave too because we all went together.

Just my two cents from years of Spring Break in Cancun :

- Know you limits
- Dont get drunk and then head for a swim
- Watch out the waves, esp if you see the red flag. Undertow can be pretty nasty
- Dont do drugs in public IF you need to do drugs anyway! Cancun alone is already drug enough.
- Watch out for the traffic / if drunk watch out even more
- Dont start a fight
- Dont get involved in a fight
- Ask the cabdriver for the price BEFORE you get in. / No needs for cabs anyways. BUSES RULE!
- Watch you drinks / Dont let them be unattended
- Leave all expensive and unneccesary stuff at home.
- For expensive stuff and large piles of money use the hotelsafe not the one on the room
- Tip propperly / also the maid
- Dont think money can buy you everything or gets you out of every trouble in Cancun
- Dont fall asleep boozed up in the sun
- Dont drink from the tap, only from bottles.
- Dont dare to rent a car or even a scooter if you are not aware of mexican driving habbits! Again like the cabs, there is no need to.
- Think about protection!! Even when totally drunk... Nothing worse than bringing some nasty STDs as souvenir back home. Or to get preggo!
- Always use Sun-Tan Lotion. A heavy sunburn can ruin your vacation and will send you of to your room for a couple of days.
- Dont try to swim in the Lagoon. Only if the area is fenced of. There are alligators! Plus the water is nasty!

I wouldn't keep large piles of money. I just used a bank atm by my hotel. The one I used had a fair exchange rate. Make sure they are legit and from a real bank though because you don't want to get ripped off.

If you don't have cell phone service, make sure you set up definite places to meet just in case you happen to get split up.

Even though its fun to bar hop and walk around the hotel zone, cops WILL arrest you if you are acting drunk outside, it almost happened to me

My friend fell in love with this girl from staten island,NY and every single night he was following her like a puppy dog to everywhere she went.
Get it in, get off and get out.

Do not rent the scooters... they may seem like a good idea they barely work my friends brakes on his didn't work and ran a red light and almost got hit by a bus and they drive crazy.

Well my dad was in the military and we traveled all over the country so I'm not actually from Nebraska, I unfortunately ended up there though. Most of the chicks and dudes here are pretty boring actually.

When I was in Cancun last year, I found the only people that got into some serious trouble were the ones who drank too much. Don't get me wrong, I love to party, but I saw some college kids come out of a club and one of them fell face first on the pavement. It looked so bad, and that wasn't even a run in with a drug cartel, it was the pavement. It would be interesting to see how many accidents with tourists are related to alcohol.

I think booze is an essential part of spring break, but it can also be the source or ruin. That would be my contribution to this thread, is drink responsible and avoid the Gringo Boracho stigma.
