Why don't you just change up some money before you go into pesos? That is what i have done.

Buy a prepaid visa card, and then you can use that.

you can exchange your USD at your hotel, or other locations, they are very common. As for them NOT accepting USD, I think that is a lie lol.

big stoz - I'm not sure why you are changing your pounds into dollars when you are going to Mexico on holiday? But the best thing to by far is just bring your cashpoint card and get pesos out of the cash machines here.

You get the best exchange rate and least charges that way. And you have pesos which can be used everywhere in Cancun as they are the national currency.

No US dollars needed.

If you pay for things in stores with US dollars they give you a crappy exchange rate, so basically you lose out all round.

In answer to your question you can still spend US dollars here.

Cheers guys ... think im gunna go for brigning pesos with just enough dollars for tips. Was only thinking USD because its easier to convert in my head!!

Do the clubs accept pesos on the door then? and if so does that work out cheaper then paying the $30-40?

Sorry for all the questions its my first time for spring break and as usual ive left things to last minute lol

Just a little tip too, If you plan on using your atm card to make withdrawls, obviously notify your bank you are leaving the country but also make sure you know to check your withdrawl limit in pesos which is tricky because exchange rates change all the time. I tried to take out $300 US dollars worth of pesos out of an atm ($300 being my max daily withdrawl amount) and it made it look like I was taking out a lot more because the exchange rate was good that day. My bank got suspicious and put a stop on my card not because I was using my card out of country but because it looked like I was trying taking out more than my daily withdrawl limit.

Basically, if you have an atm withdrawl limit of say 300 us dollars it might be a good idea to attempt to only take out 200 dollars worth to avoid it looking like you're card is being overdrawn.

Lesson learned the hard way and I was stuck with no money for the rest of the week. I had to bum off my brother and pay him back. Trying to call the bank from mexico was a nightmare too. They would put me on hold so long that the pay phone would run out of money before I even got to speak with anyone.

You need a better brother. If I go anywhere with my sister, I always pay for everything.

Yeah, I had to do that from Ibiza. Was on hold for like 10 minutes. I told them I'm calling international long distance too before they put me on hold.

You can use USD at most places here

Right now at hotels and the Cambios ($ exchange places) the going rate is between 11 and 11.5 pesos to the dollar. Most stores actually offer a better rate. A Place yesterday was 12.35. Just ask and use whatever gives you the better rate, but most of the time it's the dollar.

You pay in dollars, your change will be in pesos

The "law" claims places can't take more then $100 per transaction in USD. Some are lower, and I have seen others in obscure places say that the states they can't take any USD which is bullshit.

Just ask and use whatever is easiest for you

Well he's my younger brother so it feels weird taking money from him or anyone really. I'm used to paying my own way for everything, I feel awkward when anyone tries to pay for me. Even in relationships we are always 50-50 Just the way I was raised i guess.

And yeah, getting put on hold sucks when you're paying so much money for the call already. I got so mad because I would get cut off every time I was on hold to the point where I just gave up and quit even trying. That pay phone made a killing off me that day

DAG girl!! where was the 12.35 at? lol. all of my Mexi-friends up here are out of pesos so unfortunately I'm going to have to get them there. I'm not changing very much over though. Maybe like 30-50 usd at most. I'm poor this year! lol.

still want that philly cheese steak? lol. I'll pick you up one and keep it hot if you pick me up at the airport! LOL!

Is the bus still 65 pesos?

AND

(sorry last question I promise)

if I get off the bus after Temptations when the bus turns onto Bonampak or Tulum Avenue... whichever one it goes down, lol. If I get off at the first stop there, what is the MOST I should pay, in pesos, for a cab to puerto Juarez? I know they like to rip off dumb ass Americans and I'd like to not be one this year since I got ripped of like 65 bucks by a cab in 2008!
