| Seems to be another person.. http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_10792.aspx Another Canadian Allegedly Attacked In Mexico Tuesday May 8, 2007 Once is a tragedy. Twice is a coincidence. You can only wonder what Canadian authorities and travellers will make of yet a third potentially deadly incident involving a local tourist in Mexico. The latest case concerns an Alberta father named Jeff Toews. The 34-year-old remains on life support in Cancun and his family fears he's not likely to survive. But just what happened to Toews remains shrouded in mystery. His brother Murray is at his bedside and insists his sibling suffered a brutal beating - and that local officials are trying to cover it all up. "He received serious head injuries, four blows to the head and he's been beat very bad on his back," the brother relates. A healthy Toews was last seen going back to his room after a late night of drinking and partying with friends at the Moon Palace Golf and Spa Resort. But when he didn't return, a search was launched and his body turned up not long after. His family insists the Grand Prairie resident showed obvious signs of trauma, but in an eerie echo of several past cases, Mexican authorities are adamant there's no evidence of foul play. "He wasn't beaten. He fell from a second storey of the hotel where he was staying," maintains Bello Melchor Rodriguez y Carrillo, the attorney general of Quintana Roo. "That's the report that we have from the security guard from the hotel, and the report we're getting from the hospital too." If that last name sounds familiar, it should - he's the same official charged with looking into the deaths of Domenic and Nancy Ianiero at another Mexican resort in February 2006. His conclusions in that case were similar, but he's been called an outright liar by Ianiero family lawyer Eddie Greenspan, who alleges he's simply protecting the country's lucrative tourist trade. The family of another Woodbridge resident, Adam De Prisco, also maintains their son died under suspicious circumstances outside Acapulco last January. And that same month, a tourist from Chatham was killed in a hit and run in Guadalajara - the same cause of death Mexicans claim killed De Prisco.

| Denise-n-Jayson and I have been PM'ing each other about it since yesterday. There was nothing about it in the regional online papers yesterday and I haven't checked 'em today yet. One update by a Canadian paper indicates he was found on the golf course. If that's the case, it's highly doubtful he fell from an upper-storey room. Still looking for clarification on that detail.

| ya, cancun is way cool, no worries down there, that just seemed to be an isolated accident! For the most part, cancun is extremely safe, I have personally never saw anything bad happen to people, other than idiots pissing out in public and getting in trouble haha.

| One incident like this to one of the thousands staying at the MP? I don't immediately recall a similar event at the MP, and if it happened more than once in a short period of time then I would start having reservations. It appears to be an isolated incident, and I pray that it was truly an accident and not an assault on the property. Because if it is a genuine assault, then someone is getting away with murder.

| Why is the word 'Canadian' attached to this? Although very unfortunate, 3 or 4 incidences involving people from Canada out of the tens of thousands of Canadians that go to Mexico over this 1.5year period is a small number in my opinion. Only if someone thought people were being attacked for being from Canada would this be extraordinary. And I really doubt that is the case.

| Surely you can tell if it is a fall or an assault. Assault clothes are problable torn due to a strugle and several visable injuries where repeadly been kicked or punched. A fall would be just more along the lines of one big one?

| Yeah it is a shame..But worth reporting. No sense in denying that these things happen right. And like someone on here said, you will find trouble if you go looking for it. Again I have been 6times to Cancun and I try to not let all this Media stop me from going. But I have to say this story wasn't a top story over here. Didn't get much attention..

| I just posted this on the other thread on Cancun Info. Lee, try not to worry and have a wonderful time!! As Michael mentioned, I've been following this story as Moon Palace is so near and dear to my heart. According to what I've read recently, he was airlifted home last night. Drs in Mexico reported that he is 100% brain dead and the family will persue a second opinion in Canada. If that is the case, they want to ensure they can donate his organs. Latest I've seen is this: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl.../National/home This article tells a very detailed but totally different account from what the family is saying. With all due respect to the family, this latest article makes slightly more sense to me as someone who has been to Moon Palace many times and knows how it is layed out. I agree that the second story isn't that high, but there are many railings, corners, cement stairs, etc. The family says security was chasing him. Perhaps true with the intent to prevent him from hurting himself? Tragically, this wasn't the outcome. Add velocity and mis-judgment to that fall and what do you have? Perhaps it did come to blows with security, but if so, was the fight what did the most damage, or could he truly have fallen as well? I've only seen that he was found at the golf course in one article. Perhaps that's not the case? Who knows... In the early accounts, it was never mentioned by the family that he was highly intoxicated and that THEY encouraged him to call it a night with one of them escorting him to his room on one of the many back and forth occasions. A distraught grieving family member could be grasping for answers they can accept. Anger is an easier emotion to tolerate then grief and regret. For the family's sake, let's hope the Canadian doctors can determine if his injuries could have been the result of a fall, or if the family's accounts of what happened are more acccurate. I can be a keyboard juror until the cows come home, but we will never know all the facts. Regardless, I'm deeply saddened for the family.

| Here is an update From Trip Advisor This is the official statement from the Mexican Embassy, and obviously, only "one" side, of a tragic story; Mexican embassy statement on Jeff Toews A statement issued Wednesday by the Mexican embassy on the case of Albertan Jeff Toews May 10, 2007 at 7:26 PM EDT Editor's note: The text is reproduced here without corrections for grammar or spelling. The Embassy of Mexico wishes to inform about the circumstances of the accident suffered by the Canadian national Jeffrey Toews in Cancun on May 7, 2007, based on the information gathered and provided by the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Quintana Roo. 1. On May 7, 2007, Preliminary Investigation AP/ZN/CAN/01/01/2195/5-2007 was initiated upon receiving notification by fax from the Hospital de las Americas, in Cancun, reporting that a patient by the name of Jeffrey Toews had arrived in an ambulance of the Mexican Red Cross, proceeding from the Moon Palace Hotel; the patient had arrived in cardio-respiratory arrest, with possible severe craneo-encephalic trauma and blunt abdominal trauma. 2. On the same date, at 7:46 pm, Mr. Toews' wife, Ms. Natalie Ivonne Campbell, appeared, assisted by interpreter Ángel Prieto Palmeros. Ms. Campbell stated that the victim and she had been in the company of some friends at the disco of the Moon Palace Hotel, hanging out and drinking alcoholic beverages until approximately 1:30 am, when one of the security guards came up to her husband and told him that he should leave the disco, since he had drunk too much. Therefore the couple decided to head to their room with a hotel security guard following them until they entered their room. Ms. Campbell stated that as she had also been drinking alcohol, she fell deeply asleep. 3. According to the statement of one of the friends travelling with the couple, at approximately 1:50 am, Mr. Toews showed up again at the disco, which is why the friend told the rest of the group that he would accompany Mr. Toews back to his room so that he would not have problems with the hotel. When he turned around again Mr. Toews was gone, so he left looking for him, heading toward his room to see if he was there. When he arrived at Mr. Toews' room, Mr. Toews was closing the door and said goodnight, so both the friend and a security guard left, heading for the restaurant since the friend's wife and other companions were there. The aforementioned friend stated that at about 2:20 am, Mr. Toews showed up again and sat down at the table, leaving again two minutes later at the urging of the rest of the companions. 4. According to the statement of one of the security guards, he was on the grounds of the hotel working at approximately 3:00 am and noticed that about forty meters from where he was standing, a male in underwear was standing inside the balcony of a room. Since he had caught the security guard's attention, the guard stopped to see what the individual would do. This same person climbed over the glass balcony onto the grass, outside the boundaries of his room. The individual took a step and then suddenly took off running toward the building to his left (Toronja building). 5. An other security guard and a bell boy travelling in a golf cart near the Toronja building saw that a guest was running along the second story of the building near the elevators, so the guard told the bell boy to stop, and they both got out of the cart. The guard told the bell boy that he was going to check to see who this individual was. He climbed the stairs to the second floor of the Toronja building, looked down the hall and saw no one. He walked in the direction in which he had seen the person run, and seconds later, from distance of twenty or thirty metres, he heard a loud thud. When he reached the stairs he descended to the first floor, this being at the opposite side of the same building, and upon reaching the bottom looked right and left but saw no one. When he turned around partially, however, he saw a guest, who turned out to be Mr. Toews, lying on the floor, bleeding from the head, and immediately radioed the security guards' control room to have them call an ambulance. 6. On May 8, 2007, the Director of the Hospital de las Americas was instructed to provide the Attorney General's Office with a copy of the clinical file of Jeffrey Toews. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl.../BNStory/Front

| Yet another horribly tragic event in Cancun. But this kind of stuff happens everywhere and as highly traveled as Cancun is these events here seem to get more media attention. My prayers go out to his family and friends.
