Default Aveage wage for office workers in Cancun

What would be the average hourly wage for an English speaking/writing person in Cancun? This would be for a marketing assistant/office admin type position (not a sales job nor travel related). I'm looking to open up a satellite office for my marketing company in Mexico.

Thanks in advance

i might just not know but i never heard of being paid hourly while i was living there and looking for an Executive Assistant job, and most of the salaries i heard about were not really good, at all, they were around 5 or 6 thousand pesos a month, working 6 days a weeks, 8 hours a day...

Little further explanation. Yes it isn't a typical Cancun job. This would be for part-time work. Think more like the outsourced centers in Mexico City and Guadalajara.

I think we are probably not going to get to a good response here since the question doesn't relate to the reality of Cancun. People don't get paid by the hour in Cancun but here are some possible scenarios that might badly answer a bad question:

I know that people are being hired for about a thousand dollars a month and if you figure 160 hours a month you get $6-$7 usd per hour but there are other factors that make this NOT an apple to apple comparison of the question to the answer.

If you want to hire someone freelance with marketing and English language skills part time, you have to negotiate and might get someone part time for say $1,000-$2,000 a month depending on level of marketing and language skills.

Lots of people freelance to make extra money and many people are without work right now.

Ok to make it simple. What would be the average monthly wage for a Mexican citizen working in an office with decent written English skills.

Thanks

I work for a big travel company, the guys in my office write in English which I then correct. They are supposed to be the cream of the crop but their written skills in English really are still quite bad (as in it is obvious that it was written by somebody who is not a native speaker).

They get paid 14,000 pesos a month.

Obviously if they were freelancing the price would go up.

I know a number of native English speakers who work full time here for just what Jim said, between $1000 and $1500 USD.

I would say that 10000 pesos a month is on the high side of the average. I know some professionals (university degrees and years of experience in their field) making 6000 pesos a month. Being a native speaker, the price goes up, those making 15000 pesos are considered quite lucky.

Matkirk,

No offense; just out of curiosity. Did you review the info on the page your Blue Tulum link leads to?

Being a non-native speaker, I'm sure my English writting skills are far from being the best. However, I found at least 10 writting/typing mistakes in that webpage. I wonder how much I'd make if I were to correct them.

Blue Tulum uses Best Day/e-travelsolution right? They have so many errors in their listings that it's not funny. They need to have every page of info reviewed by a native English speaker.

I have to agree that some of the numbers being throw around in this tread seem quite generous by Cancun standards.

All but the most spoiled Mexican's that I know here would consider $10,000+ pesos a month to be an excellent paycheck.

No not yet - so much other work to do

If you'd like to apply for a job they are hiring though, they are always looking for people with good writing skills in both languages. PM me if you are interested.

O.K. so let me ask this way, What is the minimum wage in Cancun? I understand that there is no hourly pay, but there is a minimum wage.

We are trying to figure out what we can expect to be paid working at the Marriott or the Ritz, as we will be a transfer from state. We are trying to figure if we could live comfortable like here in the states.

I presently make anywhere from 650 to 850 a week as a bartender at Marriott. My partner is a assistant manager at a local spa and makes about 700 a week.

Any insight would be great and appreciated. We are trying to figure what to base our lower income there on.

Hmmm, the minimum wage?
You'll probably wish you hadn't asked. It's 55 pesos a day, so about $4.50 USD

you are right, wish I had not asked. Though from what I have seen on the boards is to expect something around 1,000 to 1,500. Which is still low for us.

Can not get the ideal out of my head, moving to Cancun. And I do not even like the beach, LOL,.

Only a small percentage of foreigners are earning, here, what you're earning in the states, and it costs about the same to live here as there, if you try to observe the exact equivalent lifestyle.

Highest pay I've heard of, among those I know personally (who are willing to talk about it) is 45,000 pesos/month. Most are getting by on half that, or less.

Jim's figure, of 1,000-1,500 USD equivalent, sounds about right to me, if we're talking about what a majority of foreigners are earning.

From my knowledge, normal office jobs pay anything from 6,000 pesos a month up to maybe 20,000 a month.

The job you describe would probably pay on the higher side of that, between 12,000 and 20,000, depending on the skills of the employee.

As I've said before most Mexicans I know here are earning between 6,000 and 12,000 pesos a month. Business owners and specialists (Doctors, lawyers, professors, etc) make up those I know who surpass that amount. For foreigners that don't have their own business, and ignoring the extremely restrictive work laws, I'd say they average less than 1,000usd monthly from earnings working locally. I've known some timeshare people who have boasted of 30,000usd months, but those are the rare exception, and my understanding is many, many, many people who try timeshare leave having earned very little if anything. The best thing to do is find a company in the US that can relocate you here and pay you a US salary for your work here.. those sorts of jobs are very rare, but I do know a lucky few who have managed to arrange just that. It can be done, but if it were easy everyone would be living here...
