With regards to the woman at Delfines with the rocks in her bag, I believe it was determined to be suicide, another fairly frequent event in Cancun.

Default packing my rooter tooter now

Hmmmmm I would have thought the easy way to commit suicide in this situation would have been to fill the backpack with wet sand rather than rocks. easier to do with the location, and sand as everyone knows would fill every space where rocks would leave loads of voids, and less weight.

since joining this board I find it hard to believe that people are more interested in writing about sensatnalism and murder, drug dealers also safety on more than one thread than how to encourage people to come here. even rivergirl has become paranoid about living in cancun and throws more negatives about the place that will be more likely to chasing people away than coming on vacation and all this before we arrive on our first trip ever across the pond.

looks like im kind of all worried now and this on top of an 8 hour flight and I hate flying grrrrr.

c'mon guys lets hear some nice stories from all you expats instead of all the negatives I can go on here all day but I wont lol
have a nice day viewers.

There are a handful of people who live in Cancun who regularly post to this forum. Their interests, needs, personalities and even current state of mind are naturally reflected in what you read. Many others follow, at a distance.

Among those I've met who've lived in Cancun long term- more than ten years for example- there is a high level of satisfaction with life here. They rarely post, though they may follow the forum.

There are threads that contain mention of the positives of the place, and the benefits of living here. Among others, there is this one-

Why do you live in Cancun?

I am sorry to hear that while reading all the great posts on here, and the positives that we talk about all the time, you are focused on the couple negative items. And you are in the living in forum, which is far from the glitz and glamour of the coming here on vacation. What is talked about here, happens in any large city....in some shape or form.

I have only been here since October, and RG has been here I think 10 yrs, so she has been around the block a few times more then me, and alot of other posters. She more experience and first hand information on things none of us will ever see, hear or speak about. On the occasion that an acquaintance comes to Cancun for a Holiday, I venture out to the HZ to meet up with them and most of the time my mind thinks it's on vacation in LaLa land. Then on the bus ride back home, I am reminded that I live in a regular pretty sizable city. But I walk my Dog at 2 am sometimes and never need to look over my shoulder. I walk Av Tulum and Yaxchilan...and the HZ and have never been offered drugs. So my point is, are you going to let a couple negatives make you leery of your Holiday and even more, stay off a very informative website?

Sorry if I seemed to ramble. But I hope I changed your mind somewhat on your fears. Please be opened minded, come on vacation, and relax!!!

haggis and neeps: ya do realize that you're on a forum entitled Living in Cancun and therefore it is a constant conversation about.....Life in Cancun! People don't post here to give those visiting as tourists a sunny view of life there but to discuss logistics, considerations, and positives and negatives. Why would this forum serve to encourage people to come here? It's not a forum to market Cancun as a tourist destination.

People who live in Cancun go about their daily lives for the most part giving no thought to tourists, so what would we possibly have to share that would get people psyched to visit?

I recently posted information about the low death rates of tourists visiting this area. Whatever I think about living here does not have anything to do with the fact that I do believe and know that this area is safe for tourists. Just don't get drunk and go swimming, and always wear your seatbelt.

Perhaps the tourism industry should pay me to shut up about my personal problems with living here? I seem to be far more influential that I thought I was.

@haggis & neeps: I think you slipped into the wrong part of the forum

I find it hard to "market" Cancun with stuff such as: "Thousands and thousands of stray dogs and cats", "potholes the size of a regular Sedan", "parks without functioning lights and filled with garbage", "severe corruption" etc.

I have never seen this kind of stuff on websites/brochures when I went traveling to(and through) USA, Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, Egypt etc.

I mean I for one LOVE to visit Mexico City, but after living there for a couple of months(and this is without working..) I had enough - just imagine dealing with the traffic etc.

Same goes for New York, Bangkok, Sydney etc. Lovely to visit, but quite different to live in

I think most of us agree that the Hotel Zone here is probably the safest place in Cancun(duuh!).

Most accidents happen due to human stupidity, if thats any comfort, haha

Here is a bad story about the travel to Mexico, not Cancun but I thought I would post it. The other is a good plan by former MN Governor Jesse "The Body" Ventura. Forward to the 6:00 mark.

Edit: do a serch for Jesse Ventura on the above link and click on the "Ventura talks politics, new book (part 1)" video.

Here's an article about travel to Mexico that rightfully understands how big this country actually is:
