Default Looking for Cancun LASIK surgery recommendations...

Looking for LASIK recommendations... I've been looking for a place in or around Cancun to have my eyes Lasik'd. The places in the malls seems overpriced and under-visited to me so I'd like some alternatives. I recall reading years ago about someone here would had it done locally with good results, but I couldn't find the thread, so I'm looking for any recommendations you all may wish to share.....

@Life: My wife did it in Perfect Vision.

Everything went perfect and she says "Its the best decision in her life" (after marrying me, that is, hehe )

Its located next to Starbucks on Bonampak. I think its Bonampak - Uxmal to be more precise.

The cost was 17 000 pesos, but I assume it depends on the treatment....?

Dont know how much you had in mind.

The Doc speaks perfect English as well, if that helps

A coworker also used Perfect Vision on Bonampak. I think she said it cost 15000 pesos (a little less than Rawkus' estimate, but I may be wrong) She hasn't had any problems or side effects, and her vision is great!

She told me they have a payment program where you can pay around $1000 pesos a month (I believe), if you're interested. Not sure if it includes interest.

I plan on doing it with them later this year.

Thanks for the reply.. 17,000 is on the high side IMHO and I think perfect vision is one of the ones in the malls.. which probably contributes to the price tag... good to hear they did a good job though... I expect any payment plans are reserved for Mexicans with Mexican credit....

Lasik has gotten pretty affordable in the States but by the time I made a trip, paid lodging, and everything else there wouldn't be any savings.... my mom had it done some years ago at "the best" place in Florida with a doc that had tens of thousands of procedures to his name and it was around $800 including all pre and post op care.. and that was years ago when it wasn't as popular.... so here in Mexico where malpractice insurance isn't a factor, doctors/nurses earn less, rent is less, and so on so forth, I'd hate to pay twice the price unless there is no alternative...

@Gringation: Apparently it depends on the treatment. She was quoted "17 000 - 21 000" before they did all the tests

But yeah, it was fast, professional etc. Cant complain at all

@Life: Dont know what the prices "should" be around here, but I know we pay about 1200$US per eye back home, so 17 000 MXP sounds great to me, hehe

Well, I guess its possible that the prices have actually gone up even though its more popular than ever.... a quick search on Google found advertisements in Florida for "as low as" $299 (per eye) so it's still somewhat affordable in the US assuming those places know what they're doing. The basic procedure itself seems like a trained monkey could do it so long as the machine is working properly... although I'd probably have to do one eye at a time if I go the trained monkey route just to be safe..

Hahahahaha

I think trained monkeys could do a LOT of good here in Cancun.

CFE, Cablemenos, Telmex etc.

EDIT: That seems like a REALLY good price! It would be cheaper for my brother to fly from Sweden and do it in US than doing it back home! :O

How right you are!

As for the $299 places.. even I, the cheapskate of cheapskates, would be careful before letting them mess with my eyes.. although I'm sure a lot of really good doctors have to offer low prices to get their clinics started. I think one of the reasons my mom got a good price at a good place was shear volume.. that place was busy every time we went from pre-op to post. On the other hand places here might only do a few procedures a week given that its very expensive for your average Mexican...

Perfect Vision- Dr Carlos Alocer Lamm is fabulous . He explains everything very clearly, is kind and gentle. I had the treatment , my mum flew out from Uk and had it and so did my daughter.
He is worth every peso.
Good Luck

This is very interesting what with my girl friend being Swedish too!, can you have a free test where they can say how much it will cost you?.
Do you have to book it or just turn up?. I see the link to the website but thought we would ask you first.
We may well pop in there tomorrow as there prices are less then a 3rd England are charging. As for advertised prices, ignore them. We see so many places advertising £350 per eye, but when you went to them and had there "free" test is would work out well over £3000.

Many thanks again.

OK we are popping in tomorrow afternoon to have a tests done, Said it was 500 peso, but that money would be taken out there final cost of treatment if we go ahead with the treatment. Will will have to buy her some cheap glass's to wear for a week before the treatment as she wears contacts. Any suggestions?. Cheaper the better, no care for style haha.

You can get cheap glasses for around $300 pesos at the place at wal-mart... but it will take several days or a week to get them made.. I don't know of any Lens Crafters "in about an hour" kind of places here..... I'm surprised that she doesn't already own a pair.... I can't stand to wear contacts all the time and when I'm home I don't.... you also never know when you're going to lose one so I keep a pair of glasses in the car too... In any event let us know how it goes.. I sort of thought I'd have to not wear my contacts for some time even before the initial test so that my eyes are their "normal" shape.... am I wrong?

Yea the amount of time before the tests is 24 hours then 1 week before the op is done. with her job glass's are just to hard. She does sport, Swim and Ents in general. Thats a very good price at Walmart, where in no rush to get them as its a good few weeks until she will getting it done. Thanks for the advice.

Update.

Had the tests done, he was very very good and spoke perfect English, found at Fridas eyes are -6.75 and she had been using -6.50 so very slightly worse then we thought. We was told before the tests the surgery charge would be 17000 to 23000 pesos so was very happy when he said the price would only be 16000 peso -500 we paid for the tests. This was because part of her eyes was either thick or thin or somthing I have no understanding of!.
He said anything above 6.5 they have a 88% Chance of perfect visoin and worst case it will be far better then she has now being 92% perfect vison.
We was quoted £1795 PER EYE, thats pretty much 70000 Peso for both eyes in England so a MASSIVE saving. We are going to go ahead next month once she has finished work. :-)

Well that's good news for you. I don't feel nearly as blind with my -1.75 now lol... hopefully everything will work out perfectly for her... I guess I'll start saving my pesos since no one seems to know of a more affordable place to have it done...

Life,
If you are talking about Magruder Eye Clinic in Central Florida, that is where I think I would go. They are well thought of and reasonable according to the guy I have gone to for 30 years for my contacts.

Where I would NOT go is where our friend D, went but I did not ask where that was. D as in the owner of where you, R and I have met up from time to time.

TJ, I'm not sure of the name of the place my mom went, but I remember it was supposed to be one of the best. It was in the Tampa Bay area so I don't think it was the one you mentioned.. as for "D" I haven't ever asked him about Lasik, but perhaps I will next time I run into him...

Looks like that's bad info.. I went there today to see if they had any frames for the $300 peso glasses I bought there a year and a half ago... they did have the exact same frames..... $580 pesos... and the 'package" with lenses was $880... so they've gone up 300% in that time.. and I didn't see any cheaper prices than that.. so I'm withdrawing my recommendation for them.. When I told the girl there that I had bought the glasses there complete for $300 (I think is was $280 actually) she looked at me like I was on crack.. so I guess they've had higher prices for a while... I suspect they may have changed owners... or I got a really good sale price and didn't realize it... kinda wish I had ordered two pairs now lol

Yea I picked up Fridas today as she needs to wear them for a week before getting the laser done and the cheapist most ugly glass was 900 Peso in the sale!. Never mind she needed them anyhow as can't wear contacts a week before.

Well sorry about that.. hopefully they weren't too ugly for that price.. really irritates me a bit though because I know they only pay a few dollars for the frames in my glasses then ask $580 for them.. the little dollar stores have the same cheap frames from time to time in their sunglasses, so I'll just keep an eye out for ones with the same lens shape if I don't end up getting lasik myself soon...

WOW!!!! After reading this thread regarding LASIK and people looking for bargains.....!!! AND also expecting a proficient ophalmologist to do the best procedure....makes me laugh.....almost out loud!

As a high skilled American optometrist with many patients having undergone LASIK with excellent results, I perform all the post-op follow-up visits for the surgeon... I have heard many horror stories with people price shopping....! Remember, these ARE your eyes we are talking about.

Quality & good results does cost money.......OK.....maybe not as much in Cancun as in the USA....but....the last thing I would be doing is searching for the "guy who does it the cheapest...!"

Just my opinion - only...........

I agree, we have booked up with the above on in Cancun after many people have reccomened it.

Like I said a while back, you see adverts online boasting £400 per eye, you go to there free meeting and it turns out too be £2000 odd per eye. thats what we have seen anyhow.
