Default Castillo del Mar Bar Cancun - News

Has anyone else heard this news today?
Molotov cocktails thrown into this downtown bar and 8 people killed. Reports on the radio state the owner had refused to pay protection money. I have been told it is already on CNN - off to check.

Tracey - when has Reg 229 on the wrong side of Portillo been in Downtown?

More utter rubbish by the media - and why the international attention??

Some of the news is saying "a popular area of Cancun" but this in not popular for me. This place is on Leona Vicario, east of Kabah.

10 heavily armed men arrived at 1 am and herded everyone to an area of the bar that was away from any exit. They tossed the molotav cocktails and the place burned to the ground. 8 dead and 2 more in serious condition.

They were driving a VW Jetta and a Silverado.

THIS IS NOT IN A TOURIST AREA OR REMOTELY NEAR ANYWHERE A TOURIST WOULD GO. IT IS SAD FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF THOSE DEAD AND INJURED BUT IT WOULD SHOCK ME IF A GRINGO HAS EVEN BEEN INSIDE OF THIS PLACE. EVERYONE SHOULD BE CAUTIOUS AND CONCERNED BUT THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM FOR POTENTIAL TOURISTS TO CONCERN THEMSELVES WITH. IMHO ANYWAY.

If they were "heavily armed" why would they need molotov cocktails?

There are varying reports going around.. but it seems to not fit the established MO of "zetas" as they tend to use guns... the Jetta also doesn't match the standard vehicles they like to use... I'm thinking local street scum wannabe "zetas" did this.. but who knows... either way it makes me sick that there are people who would do things like this...

Life, 10 guys, heavily armed, don't seem out of line if there is a message being sent, which seems to be the M.O. of so many recent killings all over Mexico.

If that message was to be understood, folks had to die and damage had to be done. If they wanted lots of deaths in a dramatic fashion, and to eliminate the business altogether, using strength in numbers and weapons to get the victims in an area with no escape route and to miniumize the risk to the attackers, this makes some degree of sense, in this regard. Don't you think?

I know we all think big black Suburbans and Escalades but Jetta's can be fast and a Silverado would blend right in with the working crowd.

These are my thoughts anyway. Want to go out there and gawk?

The place apparently just had one entrance/exit and those killed were workers so they were already inside I'd imagine... I wasn't there but I just find it odd that the assailants wouldn't fire a single shot if they were heavily armed and their intent was to kill... so far I haven't heard any reports that shots were fired... one report says 6 guys another says "at least a dozen" one says dressed in gang clothes, another says "commandos" so basically I don't think anyone really got a good look at what was going on and we all know how (un)reliable witnesses tend to be... let's go gawk at the girls at the beach instead.

Unfortunately this story is on CNN and on the BBC- it does not explain where the bar is or that it does not effect tourists - It just states"Tourist resort of Cancun" . The BBC website has an option to write a comment -I have stating it is nowhere near the tourists areas. The truth is however that this sort of thing does damage the city and damages tourism.

Who's else's family is calling hysterically from home wondering why we live is such a dangerous country/city?
I have always felt safe here, even at home you have to be careful in what neighborhoods you hang out. Funny the people at home know before you do.

Fox News is calling it a "Cancun Hot Spot"

The sensationalism would be hilarious if it weren't so depressing.

I notice the BBC has edited its original version after local residents updated them on the exact location of the bar !!! Well done to the BBC for that.

THE PLOT THICKENS:

This is the English translation exerpted from an August 4 news story:

Agents of an elite corps of the judicial police arrested a man identified as "Martin" who sought to extort the owner of a bar in the Gaza Ejidal Cancun.

The judicial police on Tuesday night received the report on the emergency number 066 of extortion, in the bar called Castillo de Mar, located in Region 229 on Av. Leona Vicario Avenue near the corner of Av. Kabah.

Agents from FRAI arrived at the scene and upon arrival at the bar called "Castillo del Mar" located in Region 229, on Avenue Leona Vicario near the corner of Av. Kabah, the owner said that this person came just before closing and was demanding $40,000.

The bar is about 2 blocks from where Jannets' Mum lives in 93. She knows of it and when we told her about the news she said 'it's a horrible place full of narcos'.

It seems strange to me, that if the intention was to kill people, that armed men decide to throw incendiaries rather than use the guns they had with them at the time. My pure speculation is that the intention was to burn the place to the ground, the deaths being a result of the ferocity of the fire and lack of escape routes.

My advice remains, if you put yourself in vulnerable positions such as visiting a seedy table dancing bar in a dodgy area of town that happens to be a known haunt of narco's and other undesirables at 1:30am on a Tuesday morning then you shouldnt be surprised if something bad happens. If on the other hand, that kind of activity is not your idea of fun then you are about as safe, if not moreso, than anywhere.

My thoughts: A quick stab at making a triply castle burn to the ground, failed. 8 deaths is a mass murder, sorry to say. It will blow over, but geez, can't our bad guys be more clever?

There are a lot of comparisons to the prohibition days in the states. Lots of bad guys killing each other off fighting over turf for who is going to run booze, drugs, prostitution and protection. Innocent bystanders that weren't into any of that didn't have a lot of problems. Same thing. So where is our Ellioto Nesso??? You can keep J.Edgar Hooverino.

It's a very easy neighborhood to get to from the HZ. If you stay on the R-2, it goes out to Poseos (sp?) Kabah, which is just beyond the bombing. Ounce your out past Lopez Portillo, people will look and stare and most times ask if you are lost.

Apparently they've been trying to extort the owner of the bar for "protection" money and he wouldn't pay, he in fact reported it to the authorities. I guess this is what happens if you don't pay up, brutal. :S

Didn't realize that a bomb was a worse way to die than stabbing, gunshot wounds, torture, terrorism, etc.

If there had been a firebomb murder it would have made the headlines.

The news I watch didnt mention the Cancun murders.

A guy named Martin was arrested there Aug 4, supposedly came in at closing time and was trying to extort $40,000. The owner called 066 (is that the Mexican 911?) and Martin was arrested.

Funny I don't know the emergency number but I know Pizza Hut by heart.

We called 066 once for an intruder at my neighbors place.. about 45 minutes later two good sized (as in fat, not fit) cops showed up in a pickup... the whole time we had held the intruder at bay in the back area.. they took him off and released him about 12 hours later from what I understand... so that's probably the one and only time we'll ever call the police here... God help the next intruder we catch..
