Some info from SIPSE.

The article has a picture of the victim, so if anyone is sensitive - heads up.

Well.. it's not as if people don't get shot every single day in US cities for countless reasons often over money, but as someone with several business owner friends it's still upsetting to hear that these extortion crimes are becoming more violent.

If ever there were a country that needed to allow it's people to arm themselves it's Mexico, as it is now the only ones with guns are the criminals due to Mexico's very strict gun laws that make it difficult for regular people to own guns. The honest citizens can't protect or defend themselves against gun toting murders and the police are so ineffective (and often involved with the criminals) that they can't be relied upon to provide that protection.... I'm not a NRA card carrying gun-lover type, but when you have these sorts of problems the people should be allowed to protect themselves, their families, and their livelihood.

It's just a sad situation...

Here's another article (in Spanish) with a little more information. Just a heads up: There's also a photo of the body, but covered by a tarp.

Recibe empresario doce impactos de bala - Grupo SIPSE, sipse.com

Very, very sad. What frustrates me the most is that the bad guys keep getting stupider. Why would they do this so close to tourist areas??

This is horrible news. As if things are not bad enough here with the decreased tourism, now this.
Is it just me or does this one appear to have slipped past the US media?

Unhappy

I haven't seen a word about it on US new channels. However, that is not the case in Canada-it is big news there. My brother just sent me a link to a cbc news/edmonton, that Mexican authorities have opened a homicide investigation to the explosion and that the ambulance that took one victim to get medical treatment ran out of gas on the way and more...
Very sad. I'd send the link if I knew how.

yeah the Canadian press is all over the word "homicide" as if it's a suggestion that it was a terrorist bombing.. all it means is that death resulted from unnatural causes (ie: gas explosion, as opposed to old age) and that they are investigating to see if anyone can be blamed for bad construction or maintenance practices... but that's not what you would think reading the stores that are being pushed up North... I think the Canadian Press at this point is almost as anti-Mexico as the US press is. Mexico's got some big problems, but the continuous suggestions that tourists are more likely to die here than they are in their own homes is contrary to the facts... but then again why would anyone expect the news to be factual... they don't get the ratings that way...

I think people are referring to the SHOOTING that happened by the Cancun Bull Ring a couple days ago. Not the EXPLOSION in Playa del Carmen. I dont think the Canadian press or US press has picked up on it yet...the explosion yes, the shooting, no. Poor guy, lived in our condo development. Never met him, but have seen the Hummer parked in our parking lot. So sad! One thing I really hate about Mexico is the corruption...

sickofsnow, I was mainly responding to the comment by tere;

but, no, I haven't heard the foreign press make anything of the shooting yet, although I'm sure they'd like to...
