|  Indices in Cancun One thing I spend far too much time on when reading the news about the UK is indices and trends. I'm fascinated by data, sad guy that I am. I love to read: - how are house prices trending, are they up or down on the month or year - how about the unemployment rate - the crime rate Nottingham, back home, is about the same size as Cancun and I can find out how many crimes happened on my street/neighbourhood, how much houses sold for and the percentage of people who are out of work. Does this data exist for Cancun? Or is it my lack of Spanish that I cant find it? Probably going to need Jim for this one  |

| and 35.2% are made up on the spot! But truthfully, it is not so much the numbers that are the issue and how they were arrived at and what they mean. (Not making this up on the spot!) This morning's paper says that tortilla consumption is down 40%. Who did the study?: The tortilla industry Where?: The study is for all over the country but the highest number--40%--refers to Cancun. What does it mean? The conclusions they reach (based on factors not included in the study) are that consumption is down because people are substituting other things in their diet--mainly fast food. True? Probably and at least partially--I guess! Why?: Could be they just did the study to prove a point or because they didn't know--doubtful--or because they want to justify raising the price or getting a subsidy. I still love stats even if they make me cynical! I guess it's still better than not having a clue. |
