Default Cheapest way to reach Isla Blanca?

Hi,

My name is Carlos and I am new to the forum. I already contacted some of the members who gave me great information about Cancun as well as Playa. I have decided to move to Cancun in November this year (for 4 months) but I still have some questions you could maybe help me answer.

As I am now Kitesurfing regularly, I have heard Isla Blanca is a great spot to improve my Kitesurfing abilities.

As I will be living in Cancun, is there a cheap and efficient way to get to Isla Blanca from Cancun?

I am not planning on having a car so I must rely on public transportation.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Cheers!

Carlos

Cycling is possible? How far and how dangerous is it to cycle there with Kitesurf equipment on my back?

A friend of mine bikes there frequently, and she says it takes maybe an hour to get there at a leisurely pace.

Just watch out for the aluxes on your way

They pass through Puerto Juarez all day, I see them storming up there when i'm on my bike, so must come down the Lopez Portillo meaning you could get one on the corner of Don Celes or outside the market next to the bridge. Should cost you about 15 pesos or something.

Thanks for the feedback!

Highly appreciated! When I will arrive I will make sure to check where and when to catch the "Collectivos" driving there.

How much would be the taxi just for curiosity?

All the way out to Isla Blanca not sure, but a taxi charged me $100 pesos out to Excellence Playa Mujeres the other week, which I believe is just before Isla Blanca.

Thanks for your replies. Maybe I should try to get a scooter. How dangerous is driving a Scooter in Cancun? Are scooters common and affordable?

The Ikarus kiteboarding school is out there, you may be able to arrange to store your gear with them, might save on transporting it back and forth.

Motos are cheap and common here (don't ask me about safety, I'm terrified of anything on two wheels, haha!)

Good luck!

Motorscooters can be had for as little as 14,000 pesos, new. I wouldn't consider it particularly dangerous to ride a motorscooter here, though you'd have to be the vigilent one to avoid a mishap. Expect to get cut off, or pushed out of your line of travel, frequently, whether or not the other driver sees you in the path he plans to take.

Thanks for the tips!

I will check how is traffic once I get there. A scooter could definitively be a suitable option as Isla Blanca is not that far. Hopefully there is not much traffic on the way neither

One of my friends got a moto for about $10,000, right friend? Some ran over her but she survived just fine and the moto was repaired.

You can get the collectivos at the Crucero (the corner of Tulum and Lopez Portillo, for $6.5 pesos last time I checked.

Isla Blanca is a bit complicated. When you go to the Excellence Playa Mujeres, we used to call this Isla Blanca although that is not technically correct. You go past the golf course, take the paved road to the very end, and there is a gravel road off to your left. Down this road about 4 km and you are at Isla Blanca proper. It's about another 2 km till you can go no farther and have to reverse your route to leave. I have not been out there in several months but for years there has been the makings of a new road, which I am told is developer financed. The base is down but it is fenced and has rocks along it so it is/was useless for now.

Good luck

Found the collectivos that take me there. Its 25 pesos one way. You can catch them near "Crucero" in front of the farmacy Canto.

Its a 40 minutes drive and there 4 buses a day: 7, 10, 1pm and 4pm.

Scooter - I cannot purchase one as I am on a Tourist VISA. Renting is quite expensive for 3 months.

If anyone is coming to Kitesurf, Isla is great for that!
