Default Memories of England

Today we had two nurses arrive at the doorstep, our little boy has recently turned one and they arrived to give him vaccinations without us even requesting and free of charge. Pneumococcal and three in one shot for Rubella, Measles and Mumps. We had a hell of a run around job when we tried to get his earlier vaccinations.

No sooner had they left, we got a call from Telmex. They called to arrange an appointment to come round to "change some wires and the modem' to upgrade our Internet to 20MB, free of charge.

I thought I was in England for a minute..... but then I looked outside and it wasn't raining.

"Progress" however we define it, happens when, wherever and whether we like it or not and we just have to remember that not all countries and cultures are on the same timeline. Nice to see good things happening as well.

I was in the car with some Mexican friends yesterday. We saw a guy picking up his dog's poop on the sidewalk and they said "Yay! Mexico's improving!!"

Excellent news on all three accounts Does anyone have any more info on this 20mb internet, is it just centro first or is it going to be the whole of Cancun? I'll get the wife on the phone, I was only just saying how disgusted i am that i pay 1000 pesos a month for what amounts to a max of 3.5mb and about 12 mins of phone calls we make on the landline a month! Pherhaps now I can watch a stream of a football game without it pausing every 5 seconds and be able to have a phone conversation on skype without my boss screaming 'WHAT' at me every few minutes! Bet upload is still 0.30mb or something scandalous though! Viva Mexico

Steve, is your 20mb live yet? Did they tell you any more info? Can you do a speedtest for me once it's live, love to know what upload speed you get.

No, it's not live yet. They're not coming until 12th October. I'll run a speed test as soon as its live.

There was a Telmex van outside today, the guys were changing all the 'boxes' on the telegraph poles. As for more info, apparently they are switching us over to fibre optic and it will take 3 hours to do the wiring in the house. Fibre optic in the UK is fairly limited still so maybe things here are catching up at last. It would be nice if the price was similar though.

Ironically, I'm quite happy with my 4Mb. I doubt I'll notice much difference with 20Mb.

Hey Steve. This post is certainly an attention grabber. In a good way too.

Why though three hours to change your in-house wire? I thought fiber just went to the modem and then you could stay with Cat 5/6 in house or stay with wireless?

Not sure John, presumably they replace all the coaxial copper with fibre optic cable both in the house and also that connects us to the pole in the street. Not much of an expert on this but seems to match what they say on their site:

El servicio de Internet más rápido, Fibra Óptica de Telmex

You can also check if you fall in the area of coverage at the above link (although it didnt work when I tried it).
