Default Spraying makes the difference

We were down in Puerto Morelos this weekend, and my wife was eaten alive by mosquitos, eventhough we were in the "center" of town. (She's one of those unfortunates who is especially attractive to them.)

This doesn't happen to us in Cancun, as a result of a vigorous and continuous program of mosquito suppression here. (You'll see and hear the trucks doing the spraying, if you're here long enough.)

Thank you, Cancun!

As with the rest of the services in Cancun i.e. Cablemas etc.. I think they have forgotten about this end of Bonampak in front of the university del caribe and possibly Corales! We used to see them all the time in Lombardo Toledano and it was a relief but the mosquitos are a nightmare here and I can't remember having seen or heard a spray truck this far down?

Uh, oh! Are you far enough out to be in the Isla Mujeres Municipality, Sam?

As for the area around the university we get sprayed here, often, and I've never seen a single mosquito, in spite of the fact that the university sits at the edge of a great mangroved area.

Sam: If it helps: Your not alone. Sunyaxchen(spelling?) hasnt seen the spray truck for about 4-5 months, despite heavy rains, a LOT of potholes(=gathering of dirty water = dengue...) etc.

Im surprised as its between Yaxchilan and Mercado 28, thus fairly central and "busy" area.

My theory is that they throw darts at a Cancun map, and that way decides what area gets serviced with various stuff, hehe.

No i don't think we're classed as Isla Mujeres, that's quite a way up i thought? Strange old place up at Rancho Viejo if you've ever followed that road up?

We're just in front of the university on the other side of the road in the private bit. I think what's happening is that they are running from the spray at the Uni and heading for the sanctuary of our house and our blood! I drive along punching thin air at night as it's like a mosquito hell if i leave the door open for more than 10 seconds and with having to load in two children into car seats, there is no getting away from it!

Isla Mujeres Muni starts just north of the university, I think, but where you live surely is Benito Juarez.

Your theory about why you've got so many mosquitoes could be correct, they spray often, and lots, around the university, especially when an outdoor event is planned.

I believe I read somewhere a while back that due to budget problems they had reduced/eliminated a lot of the spraying. And that is why dengue is becoming a HUGE problem. There have been deaths due to dengue that the govt is denying, a bit of a scandal really.

It's difficult to imagine how nice the City of Cancun might have been, at this point, absent the massive thefts of public funds which have been reported in recent years: at this point, I'm not aware of any of the employees of Benito Juarez Municipality having "turned" State's Evidence, so that prosecutions could take place. Undoubtedly, the missing sums have been identified by Federal Auditors who were sent to do the job, but how the theft occurred and who had more than general responsibility for it, so as to support a criminal prosecution, has eluded the Federal Prosecutors.

What, if anything, will motivate an employee with insider information to come forward remains to be seen. All that can be said, at this point, it seems, is that the theft (said to amount to 800,000,000 pesos, a very large sum, indeed) occurred on the watch of Mayor Gregory Sanchez.

Unconfirmed by me is a report that the Federal Government is now denying to Benito Juarez Muni apportionments designed to support local governments which, if true, may have been partly motivated by the perception that this local government is not a worthy recipient of the largess- and who would disagree, given the track record?

Our darling Mr. Sanchez is said to be running for politics again. Given his track record, who on earth would vote for him and why would any party accept him as a candidate??
