Default Cancun: Hurricane Rina

As it stands at 11pm Sunday the latest storm coming this way is named Rina, and predicted to be Hurricane Rina at Category 1 headed straight for us on Friday.

Oh joy!

Hi,

How long should it take to go away?

Is it dangerous to the point people should cancel there trips to Cancun?

I mean planes should not be flying under such circunstances anyways I guess.

Yesterday it was going to hit down by Chetumal and now it is going to near miss us. Saturday is still a long way off in weather days. I'm not panicking yet.

Hi Guys,

I hold my hands up, it's my fault. It's my one weekend in the month where I get Saturday and Sunday off and I've been planning everything to do some outdoor repairs/painting/gardening that I've been putting off for some time, basically things that need good weather. So obviously Fate has sent in a tropical storm to scupper all my well-planned activities.

So I do apologize for the inconvenience, however the weather should be nice and sunny again by Monday morning when I return to work.

Lets hope the power doesn't go out! (damn I've done it again and tempted her!!!)

It was the second fastest intensification ever from Tropical Depression to Hurricane!

Hurricanes dont "hover" (well Wilma did, but typically they don't). They move along a path, the exact path is hard to predict this far out. How long any effects last depends on how fast the storm is moving and how close we are to the centre.

This thread is in the locals forum, so most of us are stuck with it whatever happens since we live here. Here's the similar thread with more tourist input:
Temptation Resort Cancun Forum | Cancuncare Forum

Still too early to say exactly what might happen. If it's a direct hit the hotel may well be evacuated, and that wont be much fun at all. But let's not think about that at this stage. Hope you have a fab time with or without Rina.

The info in the graphics for this storm looks like a Cat 1 now, increasing to Cat 3 by later tonight or tomorrow morning and then back down to a Cat 2 when it goes past Cozumel and up the coast towards Cancun. Gone by late Friday night. Of course I hope this plays out this way. But you can never tell and the computer models have this all over the area.
Can we start a Hurrican Rina Go away chant now and keep it going till Friday?

the plane coming in from Houston was full!!!! I don't those tourist knew what was coming!
I waited out Wilma in TX but I heard tales of tourist sleeping on concrete school floors with cucharachas everywhere, using plastic sheeting for cover. also tourist trying to charge cell phones on generators and MX soldiers pointing their M16s at them yelling "NO". Cancun def does not stories like that again!!!!

I like this link a little better as it lets you see more of the land and where the center of the hurricane actually is. The other weather maps seem to be to broad and it's a little difficult to tell what the predicted path is.

Depends how susceptible your house and immediate area is to flooding. We probably wont be doing much since we are on a slight hill and unlikely to get much water in the house.

Problems with a computer virus has slowed me down, Steve, coupled with a quick WE trip to the states.

My feeling- not a prediction!, as it goes against what the national weather service is telling us- is that this storm will do what Ida did, and pass us somewhat out to sea, in the straights between Yucatan and Cuba.

Still, they've ordered my university closed, so I get some unscheduled days off, never a bad thing!

I heard on the news yesterday that there are currently 85,000 tourists in the hotels of Cancun and the Mayan Riviera! They are the diehards of tourism, and will not be denied!

The sun is shining at the moment, 8:10 AM, so I suggest you all get out to the beaches, now!, just in case it doesn't last....

I'm with V, I have a feeling it will head off towards Cuba... mainly because that's what they all did last year.

Woke up to sunshine this morning and was disappointed. I'd like this baby to hurry up and be out by the weekend!

V: There you are!

I heard that the current cold front(lovely, by the way!) could help push Rina out to sea, at least a bit. Lets hope for that, to start with.

A friend whom works in one of the Oasis hotels said that evacuation will start this afternoon. Hey, at least some of them get to see downtown, aka the real Cancun, where all(most) the Forum people live.

Today is a beautiful day and a LOOOONG walk to the beach with the dogs is scheduled. Furniture have been raised some 40 cm off the floor, and most of our flat is as prepared as it can be.

Now, if only my mom could stop emailing and calling every 10 mins from back home, it would all be peaches and cream, hehe.
