Kelley, sorry I may have gotten your hopes up with the error I made in the initial post, about there being a 10K.

10K sounds a lot more manageable than a half Marathon.

Are you not in town? You can still sign up. Just 100 pesos for the 5K

Do you know where I can get more info?

EDIT: Found more info under "Carrera". So, better pay the $100 tomorrow(today) as it increases to $150 from Friday.

Anyone know what time the 5k sets off? I've got the builders in but wouldn't mind doing it if it starts at 6 or something?

Rawkus: Are you sure they allow you to do it with a dog?

Mat: Have a cold that has its peak now, so no can do. Think someone told me that the 5K "libre"(?) is kind of like "whatever you want" and that people brought dogs etc.

Cant find any other time than 4pm though...

Thanks for the info Tori - hope to be able to do it next time. And good luck with your run!

Sorry to hear you're under the weather mate.

I'll hold off then and do the next one with you. I'll bring my dog as well if we can.

For the details you're looking for, see this page-

Maraton 2011

Race packages are to be picked up at the Hotel Plaza Caribe today, until 8 PM; and race day, from 9 AM to 12 Noon. You will have to have this to participate in any of the events.

Payment is said to be made at HSBC bank (see the website for details), but I suspect ToriB paid in cash, at the sports center she described, which is the headquarters for the city's Institute of Sports, and the sponsor of this event.
_____________________

The race is said to start and end in front of the Malecon Cancun, on Av Bonampak.

All events will start and end at the same place, as I understand it, with the marathoners running all the way to KM19 in the HZ: the shorter events will run the same route, but turn around and head back to the start, much sooner.

Confirm the start/finish location when you pick up your race packs.

There will be a carb packing meal served to the runners, tonight, at 9 PM, at the Hotel Plaza Caribe.

When I ran in the 5K event, it was a free for all! There were handicapped doing it, people running while pushing their kids in carts, etc., a real fun run.

There were those, of course, going for time, and they were fast! In my over 60 YOA class, one dude finished in something like 17 minutes!

It's really cool, now, and the times for the marathon will be fast tomorrow, provided it's not too windy on the Caribbean side.

This is a great event for Cancun: get out and enjoy it, even if you're just planning to watch.

Packets are to be picked up Fri 9am to 7pm at Hotel Plaza Caribe.

Dinner is at Margaritaville for a 50peso charge at 8 or 8:30.

We did pay in Cash. In and out in 5 min.

Never heard of a Free 5k, and my Dad has been running for over 40 yrs... and organizes a very large 5mile race every year. Who else will pay for all the "goodies" for the event?

Maybe it's a generational thing, Tori: a "free for all" is not free, it's anything which is uncontrolled, disorganized, etc. My use of the expression was potentially a little bit misleading, in this context, because the event is far from disorganized: registration is required, participants' times are recorded, electronically, triggered by a chip or something similar in the equipment they issue each runner; the event is truly international, with the winners coming mainly from Africa (where else!).

As for the other details about race day, race packages, etc., the info I posted is straight off the official website, at Maraton 2011

As you can see, these are fun events, with a very happy, relaxed attitude among the participants, friends and family- not to mention, free massage, fresh fruit and water waiting at the end of the line!

I used to make an effort to keep people on this forum informed about races in the area, but it never seemed there was much interest in these events; perhaps now there is just a little more.

There is a 5K said to be coming up on Dec 31, at 8 AM, at Puerto Morelos, but I haven't been able to locate further details. Most events around here allow race day registration in the hour before the race starts (but not the races included in the big, Annual Night Marathon event, which allows registration only until 12 Noon, today, with the race starting at 4 PM).

I would be interested in this. The marathon is too soon after my last event but the PM one would work.

Right you are, ToriB, Iīm a day off, and I should have said "race day", not today; registration, in this case, is allowed race day, all right, but only between 9 AM and 12 Noon, with the race starting at 4 PM.

Tori, can you give us a report on how it was for you and your dad? Have you got any race results for the event, as a whole?

Ok, so this being my very first race and going with my Dad whom has been doing this for 30+ years and did his share of Marathons and an Ultra a couple years ago, I was a little overwhelmed and emotional.
That being said... When I approached the start, I started my stopwatch...and finished at it saying 35:28. Checked today and my "official time" states I completed in 28:18. IMPOSSIBLE!!!! My Dad's time is also off. Now on FB there is a group for runners of the area and they all claim their time is OK. How is this possible? My Dad is an organizer of a Race every year and isn't an amateur with the process. Someone dropped the ball somewhere...and he is leaving this piece of info from the people back home.
Other then that...I have no other gripes. Wish more folks came out....oh and that it started and finished inside the HZ. Us 5k'ers had not much of a view. Not sure why they changed the course. Last year it was all at the Flag.

Where, in the HZ?

As for your time of 28:18, completely believable! That would be the equivalent of maintaining a slow run for the entire 5K, without taking any walking breaks.

The time you gave yourself would be more appropriate for me!, and is just a little faster than a brisk walk; or, as I actually do it, a run/walk.

Oh I walked. I know my time that I did is correct, especially since my Dad timed me as well as himself. I had a pretty great pace until the turn around and the sun was right in my eyes and gave me a terrible headache. After that, I never thought the finish would appear.

The Start/Finish was at the Flag at Casa Maya. Not sure why they moved it to downtown. No spectators....kind of got bored. I like the roar of cheer. Help to motivate.

Actually, Tori, if you were walking part of the way, 35 min is not half bad! Sorry about the headache. There is another possible reason for your headache, though, besides the sun.

It often occurs, with some people, that when they exert themselves in an event of this type, they get an "exertion headache". My wife does, and she has avoided fast running for that reason, and will not compete for time.

Taking an aspirin both before and after might prevent it, but I don't know, because she hasn't tried it. I don't get them, and perhaps most don't, but some do and it takes away some of the fun, obviously.

As for someone to cheer you, I was amused that, at the finish line, there was a large crowd of people cheering each finisher as they crossed: I couldn't help laughing, but did appreciate it, anyway, when I ran in 2009!

Starting at the Esplanade de la Bandera, in front of Casa Maya, is a lot more beautiful place to run than Av Bonampak. Why they would consider changing it, is beyond me, as it would seem to me to have the potential of further complicating the traffic problems from road closures....

Did any readers of this forum run, besides ToriB????

I just starting this running gig about 8 weeks ago. That coupled with the head cold I have had for the last week, I was hoping to come in under an hour. I didn't walk much...30 seconds here and there to blow my nose. I kept it at a slower pace, as I didn't want to hate my first event and give up.

Good for you, ToriB, and good thinking. Easiest thing in the world is to try to do too much, suffer some setback, and give it up. Oldest story in the book.

Did you see anyone else you know running in the event?

Nope. Was just me and my Dad and the clothes on our backs. I was disappointed no one was around to document this moment for me : (
