If you've been able to get an FM3, then you'll be able to get an FM2, but any you get now will just be good for a year as the new law hasn't been put into effect, yet. With an FM2 you can be out of the country 30% of the time: more, could cause you to lose the status.

FYI... the owner of the company i work for has an FM2.... and he comes here once a year. I tried explaining what has been talked about on here about the FM2 restrictions, and my boss told me to shut it. I think it's a case by case issue, but not something I would want to risk if I wasn't spending the majority of my time here.

| I changed from FM3 to FM2. The new rules state that if your FM3 expires, you have to leave Mexico and cannot return until you have your FM3 renewed, OR that you must leave and apply upon your return. This did not apply to me so I am a bit uncertain. V is on vacation till Christmas Day but perhaps he will weigh in on this from afar as he is my info source. This led to my decision to do the FM2. FYI, I have the Mexican World Record of receiving mine 9 days from the date I turned in my application and required documents. My good buddy Rawkus has the record for the longest time and he may be breaking his own record at this moment. Go get em Rawkus.

I just put in for my 3rd FM2 renewal. I was told after the third is granted I can apply for permanent residence. Note: This is under the old rules.

T.J., in regard to your comments about the new rules, my posts number 1 and 3 on the following thread represent my best understanding of it; but, nothing will be definite until the new rules are implemented, sometime next year! "New Immigration Regulations"
