Default Any job for russian people as a tour guide?

Hello everybody!
I´d like to ask if someone knows something about jobs in Cancun? I know Spanish very well (my Spanish is much better than English, cause I´ve studied Spanish philology), and I´m Russiaт. that´s why I´m looking for a job in Cancún in a hotel or travel agency. I´d be very thankful if someone could help me with this question. Could you give me some piece of information?

Wow, I could never imagine such a demand for Russian speaking people in Cancun:-)
Too bad I'm too old to try with Prime Travel... They only need folks 20-30 y.o......
But teaching Russian in Cancun sounds interesting, to start with:-) Considering that I also speak some Spanish and even have a university diploma with some teaching experience.

Daria, where exactly in Russia are you from?

I'm from Voronezh, it's about 580 km to the south of Moscow. Where are you from??? Is English your native language?

I'm a student right now, but I'm going to graduate this year in July, and I'll have a university diploma with this title "teacher-linguist of foreign languages". My strong part is Spanish. Also I have some experience in working as a teacher of Spanish and translator Russian-Spanish. That's why I'm looking in Mexico or in South America. I love Spanish and everything that has to be something with this language. And I'm in love with the sea and a warm climate. heh furthermore, in Russia there is no job for me

40,000 Russian tourists expected to visit in 2012, up from around 14,000 in 2009.

Great time to be looking for a Russian speaking job.

That's right Steve: on our recent outing in Qroo there were tons of Russian tourists- and Russian speaking guides at work! Many of these guides were native Russian speakers

I'd say that any significant impact on the demand for Russian-speaking people can be felt only when the number of Russian tourists reaches anywhere near 100.000 a year, and when about 50% of them (50.000) end up in Cancun and area.

So far I don't see the numbers adding up.....

Daria, just remember that it's NOT that easy to travel half the world and then settle down in a new country. Russian citizens require a visa and later a residence permit. Obtaining those is NOT easy, just read another thread here.
I have no idea about the requirements for Russian citizens to obtain an entry visa to Mexico, but I bet that they are VERY different from the ones for Canadians, when having the passport is enough to enter Mexico for 180 days.

Не смешивай туризм с иммиграцией!!!!

Just for your information: I've submitted several job applications just out of curiosity on addresses indicated above and so far have not got any kind of replies at all.....
I don't know about the demand, but let's see if I ever get any interest from possible employers.

Or it may be just my **luck** again...

:-)))

My only criticism towards Mexico is in regards of the whole Immigration process, bureaucracy and lengthy delays with applications.
I love all the rest!!

And by the way, I've got a reply from CancunIdiomas with a job offer to come to Cancun and start teaching Russian.

So it is VERY much possible!!!!

May be **V** could be so kind and update me about the pay and conditions of a similar jobs in Cancun, since he's teaching himself??

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks again!!

About pay for teachers, I'd suggest asking the school, directly. Teacher pay is variable and low, here.

I think working as a guide will almost certainly pay more, if only because of the possibility of getting tips from satisfied customers. (Our German guide on the Isla Contoy trip got a lot of money in tips that day.)

Although I have zip experience with it, I would think someone on the ground here would have a much better shot at getting a job.

Now is peak season and demand will not be higher, nor the chances of being hired better, later- which also raises one of the major issues with such jobs, seasonality.

I know that being a guide or a whatever sport instructor pays a lot better than a teacher of whatever language.
Plus it's way too hard to arrange anything from far away. I always feel like something is missing when I correspond with someone via e-mail.... I need that personal touch, emotions and reactions....

Yeah, nothing comes easy around here, except lying on the beach and downing cool ones....

As for work, nobody's going to hand it out on a silver platter, not unless you're as cute as Elle Boggs. (Those who know our posters will know what I'm talking about.)

I know very well what it is, I mean, whole this immigration process, because it's the second time I'm living abroad (Spain), I have a lot of Russian friends who immigrated to Spain and believe me that to immigrate to Spain is MUCH MORE difficult for the Russians because of the lack of job here in Spain. The government does EVERYTHING to forbide you the entrance. It's the third time I'm here in Spain but I also have two visas denied to Spain. And I didn't try to go to work, I just wanted to be a tourist. So comparing with Spain, Mexico don't scary me because they're not so crazy about foreign people in their country.

Dariya, things will go more smoothly, getting permission to work as a teacher, if you have an apostiled certificate evidencing any degrees and teaching certificates you may have; and, to have a certified, apostiled birth certificate can be useful for enrolling in IMSS, the national health for employees in Mexico.

These are just a lot easier to get when you're still near home, than after you arrive in Mexico.

There could be openings for part time Russian teachers at my university, in an extra-curricular program, but they won't even consider you if you don't already have permission to work in Mexico.

By the way, I was in Voronezh for a visit, just about twenty years ago!

Do you think some of the students at your university would enjoy talking with some of my students, using Skype? I could arrange for an informal, small group conference of students, for practice and contact with people from another land.

Daria, just remember, that you'll never ever be able to obtain any kind of an immigrant visa prior to coming to Mexico.
Don't even plan or rely on it. If you ever decide to make one extra step and take a flight to Cancun, then remember that Russian citizens REQUIRE a visa to enter Mexico and I doubt that you can get a long term stay visa with you possible touristy application.
Mexico is not crazy about foreign people in their country??:-))) May be not:-)))
But Mexico IS in fact crazy with a limits imposed on foreigners in terms of finding work:-)
Read some posts here and find out yourself about the possible openings available for foreigners. You can NOT get a job in any area as long as they have a Mexican national available for the same position.

And remember-the pay rate for teaching in Cancun is in fact very low. And you have to find a place to work first and foremost.....

I'm not trying to stop you from coming, I'm just trying to warn you about the possible obstacles and hidden problems..

How much trouble she´d have getting a resident permit with permission to teach, or act as a guide, after she arrives remains to be seen. Just to see if it were provided for, I checked to see if a Russian could apply for a change of status here, and it seems they can.

As for the limitation on hiring foreign nationals, there is indeed such a limit, but stating that it is not allowed if there are qualified Mexicans available to hire is not the law, as I understand it; instead, it seems that not more than 10% of the workplace can be foreign nationals, but there are exceptions to even this.

And, don´t forget the option of applying for permission to teach independently, as I did, which is not limited in this way because you are not taking a job in a workplace.

There´s a lot to be overcome, but there are many examples of people in Cancun who have done it.

V, I'm denying Daria a chance to try it in Mexico:-)))
But I know every single detail of a Mexican visa application for Russian citizens....
You can get one for a very short term trip, like 2 weeks or so.... i.e. the duration of a possible tourist trip... it'll be very hard for her to change the status in a matter of 2 short weeks....

I'm not saying it's impossible for her to make it, just warning her not to mix tourism and immigration:-))

She won't have to, as I understand the process.

Once you file, they give you a document which acts as your temp right to stay, and is valid until the immigration matter is settled. If they ultimately deny the application, they would then hand her an FMM, and she would use it to leave the country. This is my impression of how this works, exactly. (This is based on my reading of the Mexican Law, and the experience of myself and others; so, it's not the equivalent of legal advice.)

For example, when you apply to renew, they take your resident permit from you which then expires while the process proceeds. In its place you are given a document which shows you have a matter pending before immigration. I´ve asked if this is my permission to stay, and they have said that's exactly what it is. Anyone who has a matter pending before the INM is given one of these.

V, I understand the concept.... But I'm afraid that that rules and regulations might be different for say Americans/Canadians and the holders of a Russian passport... Just saying..

Always. Sometimes it seems like we're not people just because we're Russian. Europe and USA can go wherever they want and we need visas to do everything!

While that is true, Dariya, don't let that rule your thoughts on this. All of us have to ask for permission to stay, and work, whatever the foreign nationality.

With Russian tourism on the rise in Cancun, the opportunities will just keep growing, along with the number of Russians, and other nationalities from the FSU, living and working here. My dental assistant is a Ukrainian.

V, I've been through tons of different application processes as a holder of a Ukrainian and later Canadian passports...
And I can tell you that the whole application process for visa, work or residence permit in ANY country is in fact A LOT easier with a Canadian passport than with a Russian or a Ukrainian one...
