Default Another fear-mongering article in Canada about Mexico.

Just read some of the comments.

Rather not read any comments as I am sure they are racist and also from people whom have never left the comforts of their own Country.

And I was always told to never confront someone with a gun.

Oh, and I am thinking there was some Canadians at some point killed in the US and Americans killed in Canada. Not to be rude, but who cares. It happens I am thinking every second all over the world and unfortunately, Mexico takes so much damn heat when it happens here. UUUGH!!!!

Have to agree Tori, I could get killed tonight on the streets of Calgary, or rather have my apartment broken into and the result and motives for criminals in either place (robbery in this case) would be the same.

It sounds like the man who was killed was at the home of someone who was probably pretty well off. If you are going to invade a home you are probably going to pick a nicer place where the loot is more plentiful.

Needless to say this won't affect my decision on whether to travel to Cancun or not!

The Colima area is about as far away from Cancun as Phoenix is from New York.

Tori, remember that we need to rename Scorpio to El Negativo, and he doesn't even live here.

Just as a heads up, you don't need to post things that have nothing to do with living in Cancun here. There is a 'free for all forum' as well on this site for things unrelated to the other forums. It's at the bottom of the main page, for politics, fun things, whatever you fancy.

It's like me posting these in some forum about living in Ottawa - same country very different destination

Man killed in a hail of bullets in Vancouver neighbourhood

Global Toronto | Man shot and killed in east Toronto is city's first homicide of 2012

Quebec police seek clues after Acton Vale man dies in attack by three men

Have a good one.

I bought my son the book, "Top Tens" for Xmas. Yesterday he said, "Dad, what's #1 of the top ten countries where tourists are murdered?"

I said, "USA?"

"Wrong. Mexico"

I hate that f^*&ing book!

Is it published by Fox News?

Of course, the volume of USA tourists to Mexico is probably far more than the volume to any other country I'd expect, except possibly Canada. So it would follow that the number of murders probably exceeds any other country too. Kind of like saying most USA citizens are murdered in the USA.

I wonder how the numbers would look if they published figures as murders per 1,000,000 USA tourists. Very small I'd bet.

Certainly, in the 7 years I've lived in Cancun there hasn't been a single murder of a USA Tourist as I recall, other than by their own family. How many US tourists have visited Cancun in that time and not been murdered

Probably more chance of being struck by lightning and winning the lottery on the same day.

Yeah, I bet there's more American tourists killed while on vacation in San Diego, L.A., San Francisco, Miami, New Orleans and NYC than are murdered in Mexico - but is that in the book, "TopTen"? I doubt it.

TJ, I'm in fact DEFENDING Mexico here:-) You should have heard and seen Canadian TV today, with all the reports, diagrams and numbers + the fear mongering after this:
CP24- UBC student found murdered in Mexico

On the other hand, I'm just wondering how many people have been killed in Detroit or Chicago overnight......

Listening to the News on CTV and CBC (Canadian channels) right now with all the propaganda of NOT going to Mexico, with cartels war death numbers being thrown in as well as picturing the WHOLE Mexico as ONE trouble spot where people and tourists should fear for their lives.....

I just find it very intersting that Canadian mass media start this kind of a campaign against Mexico and trips to Mexico every year some time after the New Year.
And always with the same slogans and same message.....

Cause Canadian Reading Week (Spring Break) is in February. Same shit happens from now to March in the US. It's old news and something I couldn't care less about. If people are not smart enough to do their own research, I don't want their ignorant stupid asses here. Seems we get enough of them as is.

Hmm, let see what happened back home in terms of violence, since New Years:

*15 year old shot dead (argument over firecrackers...)

*65 year old grabbed, taken to a nearby forest and stabbed to death.

*45 year old murdered during break in.

*43 year old dad shot dead after leaving kids at the daycare center.

*Man beats wife to death on New Years Eve, due to an argument about beer.

*3 stabbed after a smaller confrontation on the 1st of January.

Clearly, people should NEVER visit Sweden!!!!!

To clarify - No one should ever visit Sweden in Winter when they are a bunch of crazy daylight-starved suicidal depressives!

Summer time you should be fine when they all look like this...

Not sure what someone getting beaten up in Mazatlan has to do with living in Cancun.

What goes on and on?

The Canadian press using occasional isolated incidents to smear an entire country.

Or you posting anti Mexico topics?

Steve, fear mongering goes on and on..... You should just watch some of the Canadian TV these days....

You've answered your question yourself right here: **The Canadian press using occasional isolated incidents to smear an entire country.**

I just can see and hear the whole picture here in Canada...

Do you think many people in Canada can differ Mazatlan and Cancun? Nope, it's all the same for them-a RESORT town with a nice hotel!!

As I've already said-I've been all over Cancun and beyond in any time of the day or night and never felt threatened or in danger!!

Scorpio,

Just a suggestion but why don't you give this stuff a rest. 99% is not remotely related to this part of the country. When I am in Florida or New York, I could care less what happens in Chicago or LA or Detroit.

It is simply not relevant; like you posting on a Cancun forum about isolated incidents/news reports somewhere it would take 2 or 3 days to drive to.

If something in Mazatlan catches your eye, post it on a Mazatlan forum, where it may be somewhat relevant to those who might want to visit there. But like those of us who live in Cancun, we know what is going on here as if it makes a Canandian paper, FoxNews or whatever, there is a pretty good chance that it was on the news or in the news here.

Por Favor Amigo.

Just a thought.

I could, but I'd rather not. I try not to delete anything unless it's spam, blatant advertising or duplicate threads.

If I were to delete threads like this I'd get accused of covering up to 'protect' Cancun and my business. Maybe not directly, but people might think it and really there is nothing to cover up. All the incidents above took place a long way from Cancun, thousands of miles away in areas known to be dangerous. Yet the headline in each case screams "Canadian Killed / Beaten in Mexico".

We have a lot of Canadian tourists browsing this forum who are considering visiting the area so when links like this are posted some may take it at face value without delving into the story any deeper and they may not realise every single one of these incidents has happened thousands of miles away from Cancun.

You say that you are defending Mexico by posting the links but in fact you are just doing the same disservice to the country as the Canadian media are by misleading folks that the country as a whole is dangerous and that they should stay away.

For sure if there is a similar incident in Cancun then it's a serious valid point for discussion, but until then (if it ever happens - let's hope not) let's keep discussions relevant to the area of Mexico we are about.
