Kitesurf / Kiteboard in Cancun - My experience

Hi,

Just wanted to leave some comments about Kitesurfing in Cancun. As some of you know, my main goal when coming to Cancun was to Kite regularly as well as learning Spanish. I think I got both quite well!

I have found the perfect spot to learn and improve my Skills at Isla Blanca - North of Cancun. There there is a sublime kitecamp with all you need for kiting. I brought my own gear but you can rent as well as have classes over there. People are super nice, we met a lot of Mexican people and made new great friendships with fellow kitesurfers.

I must say I am very happy with the spot. Shallow water, constant wind and a great relaxed atmosphere. When there is wind, its my perfect daytrip

The site of the guy running the place is the following:

IKARUS kiteboarding & kite surfing school and shop in Yucatan, Mexico

The owner of the place is Foka. An Italian man who got married to a Mexican woman and decided to stick around

You can reach the spot by Catching a small mini-van (Colectivo) from the crossroad of the street Portillo and Tulum, in front of a Farmacy called CANTO. Any bus with written CRUCERO will take you there. Then ask for the farmacy CANTO. Mini-vans leave everyday at:

7am, 10am, 1pm and 4 pm. Arrive 15 minutes earlier and make sure to ask every bus that stops if it goes to Isla Blanca. Usually its a red and white van and its written "Isla Blanca" on the back of it.

Then ask the driver to stop you at the "campo de Paraquedistas" - about 45 minutes after the start of your drive. I tried to explain them its a kite campbut they still called it parachute camp

You can also take a taxi - between 140 and 200 pesos - depending on the mood of the driver.

Alternatively, give a call to the camp and they have a pick-up van that stops at Comercial Mexicana on Tulum street to catch people.

So if any of you is a kiteboarding or is planning on learning kitesurf in Cancun, you got the right spot for that.

I went there on the 1st of January to do some lagoon-fishing and to get some photos. Not the same place as you, but to the end of the road, where the actual beach and restaurant are.

LOVE Isla Blanca - such an peaceful place. No huge hotels, no annoying sales people, no annoying techno music - just the ocean, lagoon and nature.

(The only bad thing was all the nacos that came to continue their drinking from the evening before. Nothing like initiating the new year whilst witnessing a mom and son lift their dad up from the ground, whilst all his "lower part clothing" already ere long gone...)

I was surprised that they built the 4(!!) lane asphalt road, and suspect that Isla Blancas peaceful nature will soon be a thing of the past... Makes me sad. Arent there enough huge, ugly hotels? From what Ive heard, the "new" Hotel Zone will go from Puerto Juarez to Isla Blanca.

Hopefully it wont happen.

I hear Chinese investor are building the road. It will not go further than as it is now so the natural beauty of Isla Blanca will stay the same.

I have heard constructors are very afraid of Isla Blanca. In case of Hurricane, anything built there would just fly as the ground is not so solid (sand mostly and the vegetation of it clearly shows its instable nature). So it might happen in the future yes, but will take some time to commit them to the move.

On the other hand, the road makes it easier for people to reach this magical place which is a big plus! I am saving now around 15 minutes by collectivo to reach Ikarus Kite camp
