Isn't there supposed to be some kind of weather guarantee, comes with these expensive vacations to Cancun??? The wind is howling around my apt, as it has most of the day, often with heavy rain.

Awful weather today. I hate to think how big the potholes in our street will be tomorrow. Feel really bad, two weeks ago I had a group of 13 girls book a catamaran trip for today. They asked me about the weather in Jan because at the time rain was forecast for the next 7 days. I told them not to worry about it. I got them their own private boat and they were really excited. Anyway they went on the trip, weather was not so bad this morning but the smaller boats were not going out. They had the option to cancel and try another day or join the bigger boat with other people. They chose to join the bigger boat, bailed out at lunchtime due to the conditions and seasickness when the boat reached Isla and then got the (wrong) ferry back to Puerto Juarez mid afternoon. ![]() I have 60 people due out tomorrow on the boobs cruise, just hoping things improve rapidly overnight.

Changes in the jet stream have been in the news a lot, lately. Could our windy conditions be a result of a shift to the south of the jet stream? Here's the latest map of the flow, and you can see just how far south it's running, at the moment. http://squall.sfsu.edu/gif/jetstream_init_00.gif And, here's an image of what it's doing to the clouds. http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/watl/wv-l.jpg

Wind continues but it has been a beautiful, sunny afternoon. Wouldn't want to be out in a boat, though, unless it was a good sized catamaran or other. A week ago, when we went to Isla Contoy on the Pinta, the seas were running high, and the boat rolled considerably. Most of the passengers handled it, but a few were tossing their cookies. It was exciting, if you didn't mind the pitching and rolling action.

Roxie, there's lots can be said about the weather, these days. Weather extremes seem to be on the way to becoming the norm for us who live on this planet. Unusual numbers of people died last year, and perhaps the year before as well, of the heat in Europe. Two years or so ago, there was extreme flooding along the Danube. In contrast, this year the Danube has become unnavigable, in it's upper reaches, owing to a lack of water. Texas experienced historic drought this past summer, but cities in Alaska are now having to be rescued from record snow fall, with Russian icebreakers delivering emergency supplies of heating oil, while the NE U.S. is having a winter drought, with little to no snow. http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/t...0#.TxOCAaVrNT4 The shift in the jet stream (effects of which are perhaps a little in evidence here at the moment) has caused jets flying west across the Atlantic to have to make "unplanned" stops for fuel, in route, because the unusual headwinds are limiting their range. _______________________ Last edited by V; 01-16-2012 at 04:58 AM.

V, what's an approximate time frame for these windy conditions?? I was in Cozumel in December for some time (loved every second of it, by the way!) and thought that it was unusually windy for that place (sea is usually very calm in Cozumel, at least on the western shore) and 1 or 2 days it was that bad that diving and snorkeling was no fun at all, water was very murky and rough on the WESTERN side of the island.... I've never experienced those conditions in Cozumel before.

My sister, visiting recently, sat alone on our balcony for the last hour she was here, looking out to sea. She was savoring the last precious moments before she would have to leave. ____________________ Having some wind brings a smile to most captain's faces, I believe; and my impression of catamarans, Steve, especially of that size, is that they are very stable, and would give a good ride under most conditions of wind and weather. Sounds like that's the case! I saw a beautiful sight a week ago, exactly, when I was at the sea side with my sister and watched five catamarans launched, with their guests, one after the other from the Hotel Zone, headed into the bay- then, one by one, unfurled their sails! Just about seven hours later, I saw an equally lovely sight as the five sailed through the bay towards the Hotel Zone in the late afternoon sun, their sails making a nice contrast with the Caribbean waters. | |

For anybody who tunes in on this thread at this point, I can say the wind has stopped and the weather has been really nice since yesterday, afternoon.

I LOVE the temperature right now. Its sunny, warm enough to walk in shorts and t-shirt, yet one does not have to put up with the humidity. This weather all year round would be fantastic.
