Default Moving to Cancun

I was just wondering, i was going to start out with general questions about the life in cancun, and maybe as i get some answers get into more specific questions.

how much spanish do you need to know in order to live in cancun?
-i know when i traveled there i was able to get by with my decent knowledge of spanish in the hotel resort, but how is it outside of the hotel resort?

how much USA money would it cost to live in cancun?
Do you rent out houses, condos, apartments?

how do you find a job once you are there, are there a lot of opportunities for jobs, or is it very hard?

those are all the questions for now i might think of more later

You don't need any Spanish, you just need a lover who speaks Spanish .

It takes at least $2000k usd per month to be comfortable here for most people.

I'm not going near the job question, I have a headache already.

Definitely search the archive on this board, there's tons of relevant info there on everything from Immigration to jobs to living here.

It only costs Rivergirl $2k a month because she does not party like a rock star. The real answer to that question is not real simple. If you want to live in the hotel zone and have a car and a social life, cable tv, run your air conditioning before you are dripping with sweat, then you need more than $2k.

If you share an apt with someone reasonably close to what tourists know as downtown, say W of Yaxchilan, E (or not too far W) of Kabah, N of Coba and S of Lopez Portillo, ride the bus, take a taxi and walk when you can, buy bootleg dvd's, cook at home often, use fans and don't drink yourself silly more than once a week, and avoid socializing in the hotel zone, then I would think you can get by pretty close to $1,500 per month.

As to the job thing, you cannot work legally without an FM-3 and you basically cannot get an FM-3 without having a job to go to. So you need some staying power when you arrive, or a good friend with a couch.

At $1,500 a month you can certainly live better than what you described and in nicer areas. I would of course add taking the bus versus taking a taxi everywhere. But $1,500 here can certainly go a long way. If you have a roommate and don't waste your money on stupid stuff, you can really live pretty well on that amount. Be smart, but live well. Be stupid, move to Region 9568714257.

TJ is right, I don't party like a rock star and I don't run my air conditioning much either. I like to sweat in the heat. If you want to live the cool life you will need more moola.

Pun intended. A/C can be costly and depending on your meter, you may benefit, or pay the price of electricity.

There's a guy who lived in BBG (Bluebay Getaway) for quite a while. He just went back home for a few months but I think he plans on returning to BBG and staying for 6-8 months more.

But he still paid the normal rate to stay there...so it certainly wasn't cheap.

Of course, if you can afford it.

If you have good spanish skills you can find el cheapos on Lopez Portillo and that part of downtown.
