Default Official crappy weather thread

I am sick and tired of this crappy weather. What is going on!

We went to Mexico City, leaving boiling hot sunshine behind, for my fortieth in October and when we got back a few days later the weather was cloudy and rainy. 2 months later it still is, day after day. We must have had, what 3 or 4 sunny days since then?

My Mum's been here for ten days now and we had plans to stay at the Riu, go to Xcaret, Tulum, Isla etc we havent been able to do any of it due to the weather.

Business wise, tours are being cancelled left right and centre, people are staying in their hotels rather than going to bars, clubs and restaurants in the rain and vacationers are going back home saying they had a week of bad weather and wont come back this time next year.

This is my third autumn/winter here, previous years have been great.

Any of you long timers seen anything like this before?

Steve, the week we were there 11/23 to 11/30, we had rain for about an hour one morning,
and a few showers here and there.

It wasn't as hot as last Thanksgiving ... but we still managed to have a GREAT trip!

(a little rain is better than a BIG WILMA!)

Nope never seen it this bad before. Yes I've seen a week of bad weather straight more than once. But this is crap. I feel you on your mom visiting. It wasn't much better when my mom was here. We didn't want to book any tours because we knew it would be horrible out.

I will say however, if I had a choice between this and the hurricane last year, I'd choose this. As depressing as it is.....

Somehow, with the bad weather I've had two people tell me I look tanned. I think they are color blind but hey, I'll take it!

My first fall here we had some amazing showers that flooded the city. But it was always hot the next day. This is too much, the potholes are expanding by the second, I'm ready to quit driving. Or maybe I should get a frickin' SUV so it won't matter if I hit the stupid things...

I'm thinking El Niņo? Certainly not an expert, but the weather people keep talking about El Niņo messing with our weather in Florida. Wouldn't suprise me if the Yucatan is not affected also.

I was thinking the same thing. El Nino is affecting Cancun in a bad way but for us in the US Northeast the weather has been amazing. We may break a record high today. We usually have snow by now. We barely have to wear jackets today.
Sorry to hear about all the bad weather your way Steve.

Im so pleased that Steve officially moaned before me- I know us Brits have a reputation of complaining about the weather.
This is so crap! Everyday since approx 24th Oct - when I had a disgruntled friend staying mopping my flooded house !, its rained.Today the sun is out and boy am I grateful. Its not the wetness, the damp feeling to everything. its the greyness thats getting me down.
Lets all hope it improves and that xmas can be spent outside , having fun.

Bless you for this thread! I've been going crazy and getting progressively more depressed. The sun is out now, hope it lasts!

I got absolutely drenched on the way to work yesterday, had to borrow an extra uniform (Shrek sized) and then teach with wet bra, underwear and shoes. I was not a happy camper! The roads are crap (or closed), everything is just shite with this weather. And no, in my three years I have NEVER seen it like this. My Cancunense students are pretty much saying the same thing, that it is not common at all. Pinche El Nino!

I must continue to complain about the weather (haha). Max has been sick off and on since this started. I tried to blame it on the school but it must just be the damp. I have never dealt with more mocos in my life, little fountain! (I guess there are advantages, he's learning how to blow his nose by himself, though that's a messy affair too!)

Ah h*ll, it's pouring again. I'm getting more and more freaked out about driving in the pothole prone parts of town. I'm going to hit a pothole and have my airbags go off!

I can't believe that the city of Cancun cannot pave the streets properly! WTF is WRONG with those idiots?!? We should not have man-eating potholes open up every time it rains! I know everyone hates Chacho, but when Chacho was Mayor of Cancun the streets near my house were in FAR better condition (and they collected the garbage more regularly too). The present administration is letting the infrastructure go to h*ll, imho!

We are arriving in Cancun this coming Monday and staying all week. What is the local news saying about the weather next week? I'm keeping my fingers crossed, I need some sun and beaches.

I was talking about this same issue a few days ago with a local friend. He explained to me that the city DOES provide the money and instruct the roads to be built with the appropriate levels of asphalt so that they will last several years. HOWEVER, what inevitably happens is the contractors only pave with the bare minimum thickness (about 3 inches) and pocket what is left of the money (which adds up to quite a lot over several miles of roads) and at the same time it insures them future work “repairing” or repaving the roads. If there are any inspectors I expect they get “bought” aswell. You can look at some of these potholes and see that the concrete/asphalt is VERY thin. Then you can look at the work they are doing on the highway coming into town and see the concrete is nearly a foot deep with rebar running through it…that is how a road is supposed to be made, but as soon as you hit the Cancun area the pothole madness starts.

The thickness of the asphalt is usually not the problem. Even in NY the department of trans. only requires 1.5" of top coat asphalt and 2.5" of a binder course of asphalt. That generally works even with all of our freeze/thaw cycles and all the rain and snow we get here. And yes, it rains more here than in Seattle. The problem is how the construct the sub base. Cheap contractors do not prepare it correctly, and instead of excavating a 12" deep channel and filling it with the appropriate material, they throw some gravel down and pave it over. The earth below the gravel washes away and you get your cenote sized potholes waiting to feast on little Toyotas. I have seen them doing road work down near Tulum and they were not even close to building the road correctly. It is a system designed to fail insuring the contractors with years worth of paid repair work.

Hope the weather clears up for you guys soon

Thank god it's not just me - isn't depression due to bad weather actually a recognised thing?
This sucks, tours are cancelled, other events we planedd are cancelled and my poor pup hasn't had a decent walk in days (it's not me that doesn't want to take him the rain - he refuses to go outside and sits on the steps looking at me and squinting up at the sky).
It was kind of funny to see bright red faced tourists yesterday evening - I guess they made the most of their hour of sun yesterday!

Default Cauncun trip

Hi every one,
I 'm a newbie here!!
And will be the first time in Cancun. :!:

Well, I can see the weather will be an issue for our trip to Cancun during this Christmas. We have already booked one month before for this trip (24-31 Dec)

It seems that the next week the weather could change a bit, and I'm hopping that by the time we get there our dear God could stop purring water on Cancun. :?

What if the weather continue been so watery, What could one do in that situation?

Any advice or suggestion?

Thanks!!!

Well, I am glad we have finally had a few days of sun. Since I arrived a month ago, it has been nothing but rain, rain, and did I mention rain? The window in my bedroom of my apartment won't close, so I've been sleeping in a damp room with a fan blowing on my face to keep the mosquitos off...a month of that = a miserable cold for me.
Who would have thought Christmas in Cancun, and sick with a cold...ah well. Keeping fingers crossed for continued sunshine (and my window getting fixed sometime in the next century)! Happy Holidays!

Would have been nice if you'd pointed the fan in the other direction. You blew those cold germs over this way.

Aww, I'm awfully sorry about that. Didn't mean to share those pesky cold germs with anyone. Mobile germs, huh? Just how far did they travel?

At times.

I think it's improving, although we may get some wind from that big system that's causing problems in Texas and to the West of there.

We were seriously thinking of cancelling our upcoming trip but today the forecast looks better than even yesterday. We come from gloomy, winter weather looking for a big shot of Vitamin D to get us into spring. 7 out of 8 trips, the weather was simply gorgeous. Once, it rained the entire time.

2007 already looks brighter according to a couple weather sites. YEA!!!

Default URL for weather in Cancun

This is the site I'm looking at for weather forecasts...Do any of you local types have one you think is better?

http://www.weather.com/outlook/trave...ode=1004816856

According to the weather history, Cancun weather starts getting nice around now, and January is usually a fairly dry month. Here's hoping that's correct...

www.wunderground.com is my site of choice for weather, but you can never, ever trust any weather report so I mostly dismiss them. The weather has been great the last few days and it looks like we have another beautiful day starting.

The cool thing about wunderground is their "trip planner" where you can enter your travel dates and the weather history for that time period.

Imho NONE of the weather reports for this area are good for anything past about 12-24 hours! I would certainly not cancel a trip or plan a trip here based on what a weather report says about what could happen here in a few days or next week!

When I lived in Colorado the weather forecasts were pretty accurate at predicting the next 5 or so days. But in my experience that does not happen here. I suspect that here the data is somehow not as good, perhaps they have worse radar or something.

Don't trust anyone over age 30 and don't trust a Cancun weather forecast past 12 hours...
