Anybody with news on the Mayor in Playa ?

Weird stuff on TA about it and then deleted. Was he attacked and hurt? or worse?

The Mayor is fine.

It is a typical example of internet hysteria. Here is the sad history:

Por Esto (one of the less reliable and more sensationalized papers down here) reported that the Mayor's convoy had been attacked and shot at near the junction of the Highway and the Merida toll road. Bullet holes in one of the cars driven by the Mayor's bodyguards was offered as evidence of the attack.

Immediately this story was posted on the TA Playa Forum. There followed a number of posts and threads escalating this story with innuendos, rumors and opinions about the dangers of visiting Playa. It finally reached a stage where people were posting about the Mayor of Playa being shot near the Cancun airport.

Subsequent investigative reports indicate that the bullet holes in the bodyguard car came from the INSIDE! There is no indication the Mayor was ever shot at and it is suggested by investigators that the bodyguards either accidentally discharged a weapon or were shooting from the inside of the car at some percieved threat that turned out to be nothing.

In the end the internet is being swamped with comments about the assassination of Playa's mayor when it probably was no more than a half asleep guard with the safety off his gun shooting a hole in his own car.

Such is the power of the internet.

Thanks Tony and Cheri,

We were in Playa in June, and will be back at The Royal in 2 weeks from today! We love Playa, and have been many times, so we are certainly not worried, just wondered what it was REALLY all about.

We've already decided that on our next trip early 2012, we will be staying at one of the non-AI boutique hotels on the beach.....or maybe Luna Blue or La Tortuga, etc....just a few blocks away. If I have any questions, I may shoot you a PM.
