Safety - Your thoughts?

Hey there! To those of you who just returned from Cabo, I have a quick question. Of course there have been some crazy things on the news lately about the goings-on in Mexico and OF COURSE when we mentioned we were booking a vacation this year we got the whole "it's not safe! speech from our family.
I know that you obviously can't put yourselves in a bubble and of course just be smart about where you go & who you talk to (common sense), but I just wanted to confirm your thoughts about your recent trips. Did you feel any reason why you should be on RED ALERT or more cautious than you normally have been in the past?

We have been to the resort many times. There has been no time that we did not feel completely safe. The beach the resort is located has many resorts and is filled with people all the time. We have only traveled to Cabo a couple of times, again no problems. Many guests will leave the resort and walk to the surrounding stores. We feel as safe there as we do when we are home.

We went in March and felt totally safe the whole time. Now, when we left the resort we did take extra precaution by not carrying alot of cash, not flashing/flaunt money and were aware of our surroundings, but never once felt threatened.

dont take my word for it if you have concerns, but do know that the fact of the matter is this area has basically less than 1% unemployment rate. in fact, i have heard from others that anyone can find a job there and in talking with people there on previous trips in 2004, 2005 and our recent trip.............i found out that a lot of people come to this area to work.............just like people come to the states to work

generally speaking when the unemployment rate is in this ball park the crime rate is going to be about zero as well............and this is the case in los cabos.

for a population the size of los cabos it has one of the lowest crime rates in both central america and north amercia

We were out and about quite a bit on our trip to Cabo this year.

Rented a car, found the gas station, thought attendant miscaluclated on the change .... we were wrong, he was right

Organized a dive boat to pick us up from the new Porto in San Jose, not the norm but the Port Master and his employees helped us out immensely!

Drove down a one-way street .... the wrong way .... nice police officer stopped traffic so we could turn around Now - been to places where if that had happened they would have arrested you and demanded a couple hundred dollars to let you go!

People helped us find free parking in Los Cabos, directed us dumb lost tourists around.

I think that it is as safe in Cabo as it is anywhere. There are places I don't go in my own city ... be smart ... don't flash the diamonds ... have fun!

Thanks everyone! I'm glad to hear the same statistics are there as they were when we first visited in 2008. Our cab driver from the airport to the hotel was Mr. Cabo, I swear! He knew everything! He discussed how the unemployment rates affected the crime rates. He discussed the best areas in town, told us where not to bother spending our money and told us where we could buy "American necessities" for good prices! LOL! When he said that, I asked, "What are considered American Necessities?" He answered, "You know, Red Bull, Jack Daniels, Marlboro Cigarettes, and cheap, but nice looking tee-shirts..." I laughed so hard!

being a photographer, i carry around (what i'd consider to be) some pretty serious camera equipment: a digital slr with a long lens (to raise my center of gravity, of course... ha!) and a backpack with a few more lenses and a couple of lights. i've carried this around in cancun as recently as last september without any problem and never gave it a second thought, but now my girlfriend's terrified that i'm going to get hurt defending our gear, so i have to ask... has anyone seen people walking around with more than the typical point and shoot camera? from what i've seen and read, it's not something i should worry about as long as we're smart about it, but i also don't want to risk any trouble.

but i will say that i feel much safer walking around in san jose del cabo than i did anywhere in cancun

one day we walked up the beach and then crossed over and just walked the streets to downtown san jose del cabo

Barb and I slept through the trip into town the one night. We decided to venture into town on our own and see if we could find everyone. We were unable to and spent a few hours in town without being part of a group and it was during nighttime. We had taken a city bus into town and a cab back. We felt totally safe the entire time we were gone, we walked down a few side streets that weren't lighted that well and that maybe in other town's/cities would not be adviseable.

We have been going to Cabo for over 20 years and have NEVER felt unsafe. The same cannot be said for Cancun. Cabo does not have the drug cartel problems that other Mexican resort cities do. This is because Cabo is isolated on the tip of the Baja pennisula. This would make the transportation of drugs a hassle and not profitable. We have seen Federal Police on many occasions take locals into custody that are bugging tourist. They don't put up with that nonsense since tourism is their moneytrain.
