Default First Timer tips/Lessions learned

Here are a few lessons learned and tips from our first trip to Temptations Cabo.

1. Try to know where you are going when you arrive at the airport. The timeshare guys at the airport are like vultures going after fresh meat. We had prepaid vouchers with Gray Line and they told us ahead of time to quickly go outside the terminal and meet with the rep. A guy stopped me in the airport and I told him I had pre-arranged transportation with Gray Line. He said they had moved inside the terminal because of the bad weather. Sounded legit because it was raining outside. The guy sent me over to his buddy who started talking about when our ride to Temptations was leaving as well as other things we might want to do while we were there. It started sounding a little shady. I finally got him to admit he wasn’t with Gray Line, so I grabbed our vouchers from him and headed for the door. Outside, the Gray Line rep was waiting for us. All went well after that. Not sure where we would have ended up if we took the ride from the first guy. To quote my wife, “Those guys are sneaky little bastards”.

2. Try to eat at the resort just before leaving to go back to the airport. We didn’t. Our terminal at the airport (Delta) had very few places to eat and it was very expensive. A large bottle of water was $6.00.

3. You can get just about anything you might have forgotten at the Mega store across the street from Temptations.

4. Everywhere we went they took US dollars.

5. Unless you are independently wealthy, try taking the bus to Cabo San Lucas. You catch it right in front of the Mega store. It’s about a 25 minute scenic ride and depending on your driver, might be the best rollercoaster ride you have ever been on. It costs somewhere around $4/$5 per couple each way. We rode it three round trips and I think I got charged a different amount just about every time. Never felt unsafe and the locals were very friendly.

6. Participate in the daytime activities, go to the nightly activities and talk to people. We started out kind of slow but once we got going we ended up having one of our best vacations ever.

Seriously , get temptations cancun out of your head The resort in cabo is completely different. The only thing that connects them at all is the name

Go and have fun. I know very few people who didn't have a great time there

Here are our opinions on the two resorts.

We have only been to each of the resorts once. We were in Cancun in 2007 when it was the Blue Bay Getaway. So I am sure many things are different there now. We don’t think the resorts are completely different as some have said, but they both have their pluses and minuses.

Cabo is smaller and more intimate so it seemed a little quieter at first(more on that later). But it was only half full, at most, so I think with more people it would have been rowdier.

Both places had buses run fairly close to them so transportation was never a problem for us. There is a huge store across the street from the Cabo resort. That was convenient.

The age range of the of the two resorts seemed similar to me, but the Cabo folks seemed a little more mature. Don’t get me wrong, everyone we met in both resorts were nice friendly people. It’s just we saw a lot of people in Cancun whose only goal was to get drunk and stay drunk. They would only stop drinking when they passed out. Only saw one guy in Cabo with that attitude. He was by himself so I will cut him some slack.

I like the pools in Cancun. Three verses only one in Cabo. The Cabo pool has a zero entry end and I nearly busted my butt multiple times falling on the slippery slope.

The beach in Cabo is beautiful and perfect for taking walks on, but if you get in the water they may never find your body until it washes up somewhere. We did like swimming in the calm water at the beach in Cancun.

Both resorts were clean and the grounds were well maintained. The rooms were roughly the same size and the maids did a great job. Cancun gets the edge here because the maids made those cool animals out of the towels. The bathroom door in Cabo took a little time to get use to.

The food in both resorts was good, not great, but there was a limited variety in Cabo. I think it was due to the size of the crowd. On the plus side, in Cabo one evening they set up tables around the pool for dinner. Very nice being able to see the ocean and hear the waves crashing while eating. I don’t remember them doing that in Cancun. You could find food just about anytime in Cancun. In Cabo there was no food to be found late at night.

We really have nothing bad to say about any of the staff at either location. They were all very friendly and we almost became friends as the week went on. My wife even tipped our normal Cabo breakfast waiter even when we didn’t sit in his area. She liked the fact that he was always smiling.

The hot tub is a huge plus for Cabo. It is a large (30+ people), second story area(including a bar and dance floor) that looks out over the beach and ocean. Very nice.

The entertainment staff at both resorts was very good. We got to know the group in Cabo much better because of the smaller crowd. The daytime activities in Cancun were more risqué than in Cabo. In Cabo the daytime activities were fairly normal (pool volleyball, beach volleyball, bingo, trivia contests, horseshoes, cornhole, aerobics, shooting range…..). But still fun. There were people at the pool bar enjoying themselves all day. The only downside in Cabo was they were too strict in keeping with the time schedule. They scheduled an hour for pool volleyball. One day we had a big group playing and having a great time. But once the hour was up they wouldn’t let us play anymore. We must have wasted too much time swimming to the bar and doing shots during the game. Plus it took awhile for the ladies to remove their tops and for the guys to put them on. Even with 20 plus people begging them to let us continue playing, they said no and took down the net. ‘Rules are rules’ and they had to move on to the next activity. That’s the worst thing I have to complain about, so life is still good.

As for the nighttime activities, I am going to say Cabo is wilder than Cancun. Keep in mind that it has been four years since we have been to Cancun though. Cabo had a lingerie night which we did not make it to. They also had Karaoke one night and a live band two other nights. This is similar to what I remember they did in Cancun. Tuesday night in Cabo was the ‘Chocolate Party’ which consists of covering a couple of topless guests in chocolate and whipped cream. This was followed by a dance contest. Wednesday night was the couples challenge. This was a lot of fun because we were selected to compete. I am sure it was more fun to participate in than it was to watch. I think the big difference was that in Cancun after the activity, lots of people headed to the clubs. In Cabo we headed to the hot tub. The hot tub party was on Friday night. This event made everything I saw in Cancun look tame. They let some of the locals buy their way in, but it was the guests that made it a party. The locals were drinking, dancing a little, watching videos on the big screen and probably making fun of us tourists. The guests were dancing a lot, both in and out of the hot tub, half naked, ‘borrowing’ bottles of liquor from the bar and returning them empty, doing all types of body shots, both with and without shot glasses all while laughing and singing the entire time. Maybe Cancun was that way, we just didn’t see it.

I am still on the fence about which resort I like best. My wife prefers Cabo, but I think it is because it was our most recent trip.

I think that as much as you have visited the Temptations in Cancun, you will also have a great time in Cabo.

Sorry to be so wordy, but we were reflecting back on our trip as we were writing this. I hope this info helps.

When I was there in April, I wasn't a CC member, so I didn't know about the theme nights except for lingerie night. There were only about 20 of us that wore lingerie. There is no casino night, so there was no real impetus to wear lingerie (I gather you can't get into casino night in Cancun unless you wear lingerie). They told us that there was going to be a lingerie fashion show, but they didn't tell us that WE were the fashion show, so beware! they will make you get up on stage and strut your stuff. Then we all went to the disco where they had a male stripper then a female stripper perform, which was a lot of fun.

There was a 60's night, but I think there were all of 5 people dressed for it.

I suspect that word just doesn't get out about the theme nights because Cabo folks are not on this site as much as Cancun folks. We were also there at a quiet time for the resort, right around Easter weekend at the end of April. It was going to be Desire Week in about another few days, so we seemed to be in the calm before the storm!

However, we really liked the Cabo resort. Romantic and couples-oriented. NOT a good choice for singles. The rooftop jacuzzi area really makes the place. I haven't been to the Cancun TTR yet myself. But I totally agree with everything B&K said about the Cabo resort.

we were there with b&k and can back everything up, ESPECIALLY the friday night jacuzzi party. i'd NEVER had so much fun in my life, and i just sat there... mostly... which is perfectly fine with my. my wife though... she danced until around 3am. the outsiders were blown away, i think, which made it so much better.

but yeah, cabo was much more laid back than cancun as far as the crowd goes. at first i was a little disappointed with the amount of people, but as the week went on, we ended up getting to know everyone, b&k included, and in the end, that's what we remember the most.

i think that if you're a couple and not really into being 'picked up' by another couple, but still want the thrill of showing off your shoes, cabo is the place to go. if you're a party person, definitely cancun. if you're into crashing waves, walking around a nice town, cabo. if you're into parties, cancun.

so at the end of the day, we're going to have to think long and hard about where to go next. fortunately though, we've been lucky enough to keep in touch with most of the gang we met, so with any luck, we'll all go back together.

and as matchandahalf alluded to... compare the cancun forum size, activity and types of duscussions with the cabo forum size, activity and discussions and you'll get an idea on the type of crowd you'll find.

Wow, partying until 3 AM, no wonder we did not see you at the pool before we left on Saturday morning. Yea, the hot tub party, Barb still smiles ear to ear whenever we talk about that.

Here are a few other tidbits.

We didn’t know much about the theme nights before going to the resort. We did find out once we got there that they had a preferred ‘dress code’ of red clothes one evening and white and black clothes another evening.

We ate at the Asian restaurant one evening. The food and service were very good. I think it was only open two nights while we were there. It is kind of out of the way, so we kept forgetting to check to see when it was open.

The resort had a sea turtle release one evening we were there. They had about 100 baby sea turtles that were being released into the ocean. You could hold them and take pictures. It was fun to watch them ‘waddle’ down the beach towards the water. I don’t know how often this happens. I think we were just lucky enough to be there at the right time.

the turtles... i thought their flippers were rigid, but they're not... they're like little hands, only without the fingers.

The resort was only about 40% full last week while we were there, and the majority of the wives dressed nice for dinner.

I must say after reading all the notes I am very glad to be trying Cabo this time out. The only downside I've read is the line about Cabo not being good for singles. I only travel single so I hope that isn't the over-all concensus. I know I've always had a fantastic time in Cancun, as the broken stipper pole can attest to, and count Chinos at Cancun as a friend and truly his not being there at the moment is one of the reasons I'm trying Cabo this time. I just have to work on what my cap will say this time.
