Default Best Mexican Food Off Resort but close by

Hey, where would be the best spot to get some really good Mexican food off of the resort but close by and what would you recommend there?

Depends what you mean by close, there probably isn't anywhere within walking distance and the HZ is a little limited when it comes to real authentic stuff.

If you're up for adventure then ask a cab to take you to Yaxchillan downtown (about $6-8 each way) lots of places there including street vendors that are about as authentic as you can get.

If you're really adventurous then ask the cab to take you to Tacos Rigo, or take a bus downtown and hail a cab from there:

Be prepared for such delicacies as Cheek, Eye and Brain Tacos on the menu, along with more familiar options.

Barbacoa's the best! Just stay away from the Tripas or Lingue. Yech. One of my favorite parts of vacation is having Migas for breakfast every day at the buffet.
