Hello

I know I will sound like a party-pooper, but each time I dove in Cozumel I was somewhat dissapointed. Often times there was a lot of current, which made for short dives - my shortest being 32 minutes of bottom time.

I had better dives in Playa and Cancun.

I have 21 dives logged in Cozumel. In my opinion, fantastic diving. Drift diving is the "lazy man" dive, little work and a great opportunity to see alot of the reef. I've dove with Pappa Hoggs and ProDive out there. Both very professional and small boats (6 packs). Granted I have not been there for almost 10 years and I know the diving landscape has changed due to the amount of cruise ship traffic increasing, but I'd definitely say that the diving is worth seeing, at least once.

Never dove with any of the excursions from Cancun though so cannot provide you with any insight on that. Check out the diving forum though and I'm sure you can obtain alot more information there.

Enjoy your vacation and the diving!

Default cancun/cozumel

hotnshy-
i just got back from BBG- did a 2 tank right from the resort, mainly because the weather was bad most of the time i was there. i have logged dives in st. thomas, st. lucia, new york (where i'm from- don't knock diving here 'till you've tried it!) and various other places. i have a few friends who swear by cozumel, as the variety of options is great. never got there myself, yet.
the boat from the resort is more of a, well let's put it this way- if you are very comfortable in a small, rocking boat, when the seas are not exactly calm, you will like it (i did). great thing is, only about 8 divers on the boat- 2 divemastrs., 1 captain- so in other words, small, personalized service. the equipment is not state of the art, by any means (one of the divemasters' tanks was leaking at the reg./tank hook-up- probably a bad 0-ring; and the gauges are in metric. i would recommend bringing your own mask, good idea. the dives- both around 30-40 feet - keep in mind, partly cloudy that day- but the visibility was still very good (fantastic had i been in NY!!!)- around 80-100 feet. my second dive, we saw 2 nurse sharks- the 2nd was feeding, very cool- and a very large sea turtle, which we were able to observe for about 15 minutes.
if you're comfy with the small boat- and your options are limited by the weather, or if you just don't want to leave the resort- i'd recommend it. Boris, one of the guys down there- knows his stuff- and the divemasters were very friendly and experienced. all in all- coming from someone who has an average vis of 20 feet under optimal conditions in NY- i had a great time

Thanks.
I have lost count of the number of dives that I had, don't use a log as long as I have my Underwater camera for memory and not intrested of getting diffrent certificates, just want to enjoy the sea world.
I can Tell You, That I did all of Jamaicas North coast from Negril to Ochos Rio and beyond many wreck and night dives, I also did DR Santo domingo, Porto Platta, and Cuba a few times.Varedero and Bay of Pigs, and last summer was in the Middleast.
The Boats varied from Zodiac to Luxury Boats with all the bells and whistles, if the visibility is good I am Game, How was the Corals?
and is there a reef close by?

Two years ago one of our group was an avid diver. He foud that the resort staff were awesome and they spent their dives doing caves and underground rivers in the ares.

I forgot to mention that if you want a really great dive experience, then look into doing the cenote dives in Ixtapa. These are the fresh water caverns that are absolutely amazing. Great visibility, water temp around mid 70's, and it's fresh water. If you've done any cold water diving in Canada, you'll appreciate the visibility and warmth of this fresh water.
