Default What have YOU had stolen when you were on vacation?

I notice some post on different threads about things being stolen, i.e. passports, wallets, purses and etc.

I thought it would be informative to post some stories about what you had stolen and some tips on what you are going to do in the future to prevent it from happening again.

I had my little jewelry case, (a nylon case w/zipper about 3" x 3") stolen out of my outside zippered luggage compartment on our trip last week. I've filed a report w/TSA and United Airlines which I know wont do a thing except that its on file, but at least I filed the report.

I cant say if it was the airlines, airport, TSA or who was the culprit, we had to leave our bags w/the bellboy coz our room wasn't ready upon check-in and we also received extra towels right away when we checked into our room.....so anyone could have taken it so there's no way to point the finger at anyone except myself for leaving it in the outside pocket I guess.

The jewelry case had nothing in it that amounted more than $100 total in it, if that, but what p#ssed me off was I had my ankle bracelets I've been collecting over the years of traveling to Cancun and Negril, and the biggest kicker, I had my wedding jewelry in it, which again.....i think i bought it for $40 when I got married ages ago, just a simple matching necklace and earring set.....in todays market would be worth nothing but the fact it was my wedding jewelry.....gone.....I'm disgusted with the fact that its gone and even more irritated that someone took my piddly jewelry that wasn't worth squat.....so hopefully whoever did take it got a good kick in the face when they found out it wasn't worth jack to them, and someday they get a conscience and feel sick knowing they took something that was only worth something to ME!!!

I guess its lesson learned and from now on, the jewelry i wear on the plane will be what I'm wearing all week because now that I have nothing else to choose from to wear!!!

I had my wallet stolen from the bell desk or taxi driver going to the airport in PV Mexico. I nearly had a heart attack. Thankfully I had already put my drivers license in my shorts so I didn't get delayed getting on the plane but... I'm sure I have a few Kelly's running around there with my name :-(

Needless to say I had lost a few ccards as well as pictures :-(

Default Stolen Goods

Hi guys,
This actually happened to my friend while we were all down to Blue Bay in 2006....He had the room right on the beach next to where they rent the jet skis, his balcony was actually right on the sand, and on our 2nd night we went back to his room to grab some things and noticed that someone had stolen his portable DVD player and his Camcorder, to make a long story short, I recommend if you have a ground floor room to always use the wood they give you to make sure someone cant get in through your balcony doors....On a side not, the hotel was awesome, they had the videotape, and they took care of everything, and gave my buddy a huge discount to return to Blue Bay the following year...So hats off the managment staff...But I would def. use the safes and the extra security stick they provide

I had my wallet stolen on a day cruise to Isla. I had just taken out cash to do some shopping but the worst was my green card was in there. No fun coming back through customs, got detained, missed our flights. Takes a year to replace one of those.

George...I am saddened by your loss. Truly. That would KILL me.

Knock on wood I have never had anything stolen on vacation. However my sweetie left some credit cards at my house while we were on vacation in Mazatlan and the "friend" I had babysit for me used his WORK card to buy all sorts of crap including BOOZE. Needless to say I no longer talk to her.

Learning from the other thread I think I will keep my carry on bag with me when we get in the transfer van...I carry on all my valuables the plane so I will just keep them with me on the car trip too.

We've never had anything taking from room in all the times we've been on vacation anywhere. We've even left money out many times at BBG on accident and it was always there when we came back. Though I've heard my share of stories from people down there.

But them damn van drivers are another story. Bag they took from me had about 50 CD's (before mp3 players really existed), CD player, misc. carry on stuff like an extra shirt or two and a swimsuit. But the biggest pain in the butt was my car keys. We flew out of Chicago and live about 3 hours north of Chicago. So when I got back I had to have the car towed to the Lexus dealership (I only had one master key) and have the ECM (computer brain of the car) replaced and pay for a set of keys. Total bill for that was like $1500. Insurance paid for it but it required another trip down to Chicago. It was just one of those trips everything went wrong. Even offered $200 to the driver service for anyone that would just come by the hotel and drop off the keys no questions asked. They called me like 3 or 4 times during my trip and had it narrowed down to two guys and neither one of them would give anything up. My guy at the airport even offered to split the $200 with them and nothing.

Airport lost my luggage one year. Premier desk (Jose) called the airport for me and the airline and they told him maybe tomorrow they'd find it and drop it off. Well being in Mexico I pretty much figured I'm screwed. Told the bell boy and security staff at BBG $50 to whoever finds my bag that didn't show up at the airport. Went to BBG gift shop and bought shirt for that night and was boozing it up at Las Margitas and all of sudden at about 11:30PM bam here comes the bell boy with my bag. He got off of work and went to the airport and found it. Great guy.

That's what we do. Keep it with us till we get to the safe in the room.

I don't know if this counts or not but my husband went golfing and left our camera in the cab. He was able to track down the cab driver 6 hours later and the cabbie had no clue where the camera was. After offer the guy a $150 the cabbie suddenly knew where to find the camera. We weren't upset about the camera itself but about the pictures we didn't want showing up on the internet Oh and it was very obvious that the guy had viewed the pictures.

Lesson learned if you leave the resort with your camera, switch out the memory card so you don't lose the X-rated pictures.

We had $100 USD taken out of our shorts on the packed bus ride from the party zone around dinner time last April. With so many people on the bus, we were standing in the aisle like sardines and would never have known if someone was pick pocketing. Not too impressive, but I guess it could have been worse.

We have also heard stories about people having items stolen from rooms at BBG. One things to keep in mind is that the maid always leaves the patio door unlocked, making it very easy for someone to enter your room.

We left shirts and sandals out by the sexy pool for a little while and they were gone with noone knowing where they went.

Last time (although technically not stolen) my charger for my razor disappeared from my suitcase on the way back.....I remember packing it but nowhere to be find upon getting back. No big deal except.....can't use the razor....cost me $150

Bathing suit in the Bahamas. 5 star all inclusive on our honeymoon. Left it out on the balcony overnight to dry. We had an ocean front ground floor room. That's what I get for thinking nothing would happen at a 5 star place!!!! Security and everything there so it was definitely an employee or another guest.

Just to show that it can go the other way, first night of our first trip down there. After a hard day of drinking (and not yet being used to it) I had headed down the beach with some people and at some point kicked off my brand new sandals. Needless to say they didn't make it back to the room that night. Next day they were at the front desk.

over the years and many trips to cancun and a few to jamaica we learned to not bring the things that mean the most to us. just incase the worst would happen.. We are overly careful and therefore never gone home with broken hearts over lost or stolen items.

In 2004 we had a room on beach and 4am some guy tried to get in slid door when we where in bed. I chased him down the beach. In 2005 we where packing up to leave and Diane was on shitter and I guy saw all our stuff on bed and came into room. He did not take anything cause I went nuts on him. In 2003 we where at Fat Tuesday and I got druged by the bartender and passed out cold. Thank god Diane was there..

But this type of stuff will happen no matter where you go.

Carrie and I were just a TT and on Nice Shoes opening night someone broke into our room and stole our cash, cameras, blackberry and watches. We were just lucky they decided not to take our credit cards, wallets and passports. We were on the ground floor behind the seafood restaurant at the quiet pool. I am sure the security guard posted outside the rooms in that section had something to do with but no proof. We put the piece of wood in the patio door but did not pay attention to the fact that it was too long and did not get jammed in properly. The thief just pulled on the door until it opened.

All I can say is that I will never take another ground floor room. My disappointment so far is that Temptations has not done anything to find out how this happened nor have they given us any compensation due to the fact that their security company did not do their job. I don't even think they did anything as far reprimanding the security guard on duty.

I really wish Temptations would step up with the security issues of the rooms. I've been quite forunate, but almost everytime down I hear a horror story or two. I'm not sure what the hotel's policy is on it but more then two compliants in a month for the section the maid or security guard is working in should mean termination. I highly doubt its any guest or outsiders. I do know employees are searched when they leave so that process needs to get better also.

I know this happens at alot of resorts but somewhere a hard line has to be drawn.

It can happen in U.S hotels as well. Most times at BBG I would think its people walking beach. The beach there is public

Had a memory card stolen out of a camera at the Chinese restaurant at BBG. We realized that we had left it at the table at dinner about 10 min after we left. Went back and the waiter said he had taken it to the front desk. The front desk had my camera but my $100 memory card was gone. After talking to the manager I was told that no it was not one the employees that had taken it and that’s how it was found, when they were bussing our table. Someone from another table must have snuck over popped the $100 card out of my $400 camera and put the camera back on the table for the staff to find.

Be careful of your stuff even the great staff at the resort may pick up things if they know they can get away with it

I realize both my wife and I put sort of off-topic/non-serious answers into this.

Going on topic/not goofing: It's a simple thing really:

1) Don't bring anything on vacation that you wouldn't be OK losing. So, no need to bring the expensive jewelry, high-end electronics, etc.

and ...

2) Don't leave anything unattended in a very public place.

At the BBG, I was comfortable leaving my beach bag at our chairs while we lolled in the water, and in there was a cell phone and our camera. But the camera was an inexpensive model ($300), not my big high-end Nikon SLR. AND (very important) the bag was under the chair, and the chair leg was attached to the strap. IF anyone was going to try to do a flyby and grab it, he would have been taking a chaise lounge along for the ride, making him very conspicuous, and if he went to the effort to dig for the bag and dig through and find our camera, he would have been seen by us as well - keep one eye peeled in that direction, and got to some basic security efforts, and you won't have problems.

And use the safe ... for anything important like your passport ...

At least 25 resort vacations in 21 years, plus tons of business travel into dodgy places. No problems - a little vigilence and making sure you're not carrying anything that is overly desirable than what is available from anyone else, and you won't have an issue.
