Did I mention Austin TX was dear to my heart? For among other things its claim to be the "Music Capital of the World". Well, South by Southwest is in full swing and if you can catch it, you will be exposed to just about every amateur-wannabe-big act who could squeeze into that college town:

Austin, TX, September 30 - October 1, 2006 - Austin's newest landmark, the first Chinatown Center in Central Texas, will hold its Grand Opening celebration Saturday, September 30 through Sunday, October 1, 2006. Live entertainment will be provided during the two days of family-friendly activities, which will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday on a stage right outside M.T. Supermarket. The center is located at 10901 N. Lamar Blvd.

Both international and local entertainment will be provided, including music
performed by The Ocean Band, Frequent Flyers and Ánh Duóng, as well as martial arts demonstrations by Master Yi's World Tukong Moosul Federation and a performance by Austin's local Dragon Dance.

Visitors will find M.T. Supermarket, the largest Central Texas Asian
supermarket, a variety of authentic Asian cuisine restaurants, jewelry stores, the Austin Asian American Chamber of Commerce and over 40 other retail shops in the 180,000 square feet of retail space, which was developed by Tan International Group.

"Before Austin's Chinatown Center, people had to travel to Houston or Dallas for a true Asian experience, whether they were looking for dining, shopping or entertainment," Alex Tan, the developer of Chinatown, says. "This is also a great addition to Austin for the economy. We will soon have over 300 people employed at the center."

A taste of a growing part of Central Texas

Austin's Asian community rolled out the red carpet last week to celebrate the opening of Chinatown Center in North Austin. The gala, which drew hundreds of people and some of Austin's most prominent leaders, marked a coming of age of Austin's Asian community. Austin is fortunate to have a vibrant Asian community that is enhancing the city's reputation as a diverse cultural center.

Not so long ago, political candidates skipped Asian events because the number of Asians in Austin was small, and they were spread thinly across the city. But Asians, who include Chinese, Vietnamese and Indian Asians, are among the fastest-growing segment of Austin's population. They make up 6.2 percent of the city's residents - about 33,000.

Statewide, the U.S. Census estimated that Asians numbered 828,289 in 2005. That's more than double their population in 1990. Most savvy politicians know those numbers are too large to ignore.

That's why, no doubt, Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst was at the ribbon cutting, as was Democratic state Rep. Mark Strama, D-Austin. Both are campaigning for re-election. Mayor Will Wynn, City Council Member Jennifer Kim and Austin Fire Chief J.J. Adame broke bread at the event with developers, bankers, high-tech executives and business owners who view the Asian community as an expanding consumer market.

City demographer Ryan Robinson said Austin's Asian population doubles every 10 years, compared with the overall population that usually doubles every 25 years. That growth expanded bilingual education in Austin schools, where Vietnamese is the third most spoken language, and enhanced our palates.

"When I first came, there were two Chinese restaurants in the whole town. That was it," said Channy Soeur, chairman of the Texas Federation of Asian American Chambers of Commerce, who arrived in Austin about 30 years ago. "Asian businesses now are having a lot of impact."

The Chinatown Center underscores that fact. It is home to numerous Asian
businesses and restaurants, but it also includes a branch office for Washington Mutual and Farmer's Insurance. Anchoring the retail center is the 68,000-square-foot MT Supermarket. Chinatown developer Alex Tan said he chose the location near the intersection of Kramer Lane and Lamar Boulevard because it is the center of the biggest concentrations of Asian businesses and residents.

More development in the area is on the way. Construction is under way a block or so north of Chinatown Center for a smaller retail development called the Asian Center. In about a year, Hong Kong Square is expected to open near Parmer Lane.

It's hard to imagine Austin without its numerous Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Thai restaurants, and the Chinatown Center certainly adds to the selection. But other kinds of Asian businesses are making their mark on Austin's economy, including Samsung, Tokyo Electron and Foxconn, Soeur said.

One easily can spend half a day at the Chinatown Center, shopping for clothing or jewelry, getting a pedicure or sampling one of several restaurants.

It's the weekend. Go and enjoy a bit of Asia right here in Austin.
