We are visiting for the first time at the end of Nov and are excited with what the resort offers, buttttt we also like to explore night life, shopping off the resort. I have no idea what the surrounding area is like.

Is it within walking distance to anything significant? Short taxi ride? Any recommendations as far as leaving the resort for shopping/nightlife experiences?

    Thanks!

Unfortunately the location in the Hotel zone isn't the best. It really isn't near anything worth walking to other than the Ahora Pharmacy across the street. LOL
You can catch the R2 or R3 Bus just outside of the resort and ride for only a $1.00. It will take you the short 10 minute ride down to the shopping areas and markets. There is a really nice area where all of the nightlife is located, Coco Bongo etc....
Be willing to explore a little. The people are very friendly and willing to assist. Don't be timid to ask for assistance. There will always be someone near you that can speak Spanish and English. You can always go into Cancun, out of the Hotel Zone but that's a little more risky and I wouldn't advise it if this is your first trip. Get your footing before heading out and ALWAYS carry a little extra cash, ie. $1's & $5's for a bus ride back to the resort.

There's not too much as far as night life outside of Tempation area. You would have to grab a cab, bus or Uber to go where the night life clubs are, downtown Cancun. For shopping there are some places within walking distance mainly across the street, small souvenir shops and a drug store.

All we would add to this good advice is...be very careful if venturing out at night, the coco bongo, market club zone is very different during the day than it is at night, stay safe, stay alert, and as advised ,until you get your bearings, venture out at night only in organised excursions with a group..have fun, take care..x

Having said that, the buses during the day are very cheap, very regular, a great place to meet the local population, and a lot of fun, in a formula one type of way...lol.!

If you are looking for a great day trip you can walk to the ferry and go to Isla Mujeres and rent golf carts for the day. If we do any shopping or anything that's normally where we do it. We will spend the entire day there bumming around the island and stopping at every bar we can stop at. lol Great fun on your own or with a group.

Cab fares are negotiable cool-j......agree with the driver prior to the journey, and have change on you, if you agree to 15$ for a journey, but only have a 20$ dollar bill, be assured the driver will not have 5$ change for you......they are all in competition with each other..barter mate!

AND this is why we now wear silicon rings. Rich lost 2 at the beach and a pool. We leave the good stuff at home when we are going to be in the water a lot.

As stated above, another bit of advice I always give is LEAVE YOUR WEDDING RINGS in your SAFE!!! I can't stress this more. I have seen more people lose rings than anything else. Many rings have been forfeited to the Mexican Beach & Ocean Gods!!!

Almost forgot..and how could we, in 2011 we met a Mexican couple, Marco and Vianey, lovely people, they were on their honeymoon at TTR , and whom invited us to join them for the day at xcaret theme park, it was a wonderful experience, little did we know it was Mexican independence day, which truly made for an emotional day trip, given we were there with Mexican friends, we left the resort at 10am and never returned until 11pm, xcaret is a theme park which includes a little of everything, culminating in a show which takes place either in the Mayan "ball court" if the weather is nice, or a beautiful underground amphitheatre if the weather is inclement.....allow yourself a full day, if experiencing this particular excursion.

    All great advice! Thanks.

Coco Bongos and the boob cruise are at the top of our list of things to do. Hopefully we can find a few people who want to catch a bus and go shopping as well.

One bit of advice that we do on every trip.... Walk out of the hotel, cross the street and walk left about 300ft. Just past the Esso convenient store there is a local eatery that serves hand made quesadillas, enchiladas etc. Basically everything you order there is $1. Also, their sour cream is a little different, we usually pick up a small sour cream at the Esso, also $1, Well worth the trip and time. We are hoping it is still there with all that has been going on. We will certainly be stopping there during our Halloween trip.
