Any recommendations? Along side cash, does anyone have idea's of what the staff like to receive or/need? Stuff they may not be able to get or afford themselves? Inexpensive goods, ie: womens personal products, hair elastics, mens items..........are these good suggestions?

with the tip money they get they could buy those items. I know 2 days last October we had a young man cleaning our room so if you want to leave a gift instead or in addition to a tip probably a good idea to not make it gender specific. Also might want to leave a note it's a gift as the cleaning people won't assume you didn't just leave something out and put it on the dresser.:icon_lol:

We bring along bars of Chocolate as a little something extra. I have been told it is a treat for them and one that is expensive for them to buy.

Cash is king, but respect and being sincerely friendly goes a long way.

We found that the same girl cleaned our room every morning, so we tried to not leave a mess for her. We're adults, so we picked up after ourselves and wiped down the counters if we soiled them. Then we left her a good sized tip on the second day. She made sure our room was spotless and we had extra stuff ie; toilet paper, beer, soap shampoo.
She also went over the top creating towel sculptures for us.
Every time we would see her in the room or the halls she greeted us with a big smile.

As for wait staff, we would sit in the same section as the one waiter we had on the first day. We tipped him very well, so we got EXCEPTIONAL service from him.

The bartenders are always tipped well by us, they are the link between being sober and not remembering the night before. I like not remembering the night before or at least being able to use that as an excuse for my behavior. LOL

Be sociable and take care of your hotel staff and I promise they will take care of you.

I seem to remember Steve once posting that it's not a third world country and they can buy most things with the cash you leave, but I might be wrong. At 52 my memory likes to play a little game of "I'm adamant but wrong" occasionally lol

Cash is best, and yeah you can get pretty much anything here at prices similar to the US. I remember one person bringing a whole load of plastic bags (like you get at a supermarket) to give away as gifts. I think the recipients might have found that a little insulting.

Sports jerseys / caps etc always go down well though.

Not just sports caps. 1 of the guys on the boobs cruise fell in love with my Big Ass Fans advertising hat I wore. I wasn't getting off the boat with that 1. Thought I'd be able to get another free 1, but no! Had to pay $15 for a new 1 for this trip. I look at it this way, for the service he gave us in that horrible weather an extra $7.50 tip was well worth every penny.:partytime:

You can be much more original, to spend more time and order custom T-shirts or caps, or both online with logo of TTR and any text like : " BEST WAITER OF TTR", same for bartender and cleaning lady..Be creative :ernaehrung015:

Mexico is way different than the Dominican. The first trip to the DR I was shocked by what I saw and what the people I went with were taking. We gave away used baseball equipment, school supplies and threw candy out the bus windows like we were in a parade. It was crazy to me but the norm over there I guess.
At TTR and other places we have stayed we tip well, it's amazing how a little $ with a smile and a handshake and thank you go a long ways.

That's a really good idea, the food they give to the staff is lousy. We have sometimes snuck them a couple of plates from the buffet that they have to eat out of sight.

We used to bring the Kevlar coated work gloves to the gardeners when the Cabo TTR was open, they could'nt get them in that area at the time. They would still be using them when we went on our next trip.
