Very early to tell if this latest tropical storm will affect Cancun or not, but thought I'd start a thread anyway.

Tropical Depression 4 is headed towards the Caribbean, and current models suggest it will arrive in around a weeks time. Since this morning the projected path has veered North a little, before it looked like it was headed straight for Cancun.

With my zero meteorological skills I'll predict that it will increase in intensity but will veer more northwards as the days go on, avoid Cancun completely and as it leaves the Caribbean it will reduce in intensity and possibly affect the Carolinas, but as a storm and not as hurricane force. Of course, it could fizzle altogether.

Something to keep an eye on, but far too early to be thinking about cancelling any planned vacations.

It is that time of year.

I expect we'll be seeing threads like this for the next several months.

I've been watching this one for the past two days, since it was just a wee little tropical wave.

The very latest advisory tonight said:
"MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 35 MPH...55 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. SOME STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS... AND THE DEPRESSION COULD BECOME A TROPICAL STORM ON TUESDAY."

My prediction is that whatever it does it will do it to Florida, because Florida always gets hit, Florida and/or Cuba.

    Steve,

First I hope you recover very promptly, my wishes to you :)

Then, good idea to post this thread, but why don't you post it also in Cancun Life? I think locals are very interested too, and the newcomers don't always know how to get the information and when to be prepared. Just a suggestion...

Now predicted to be hurricane force easrlier in it's track and the track has veered south slightly.

Let's hope a weather system appears somewhere else to force it Northwards sooner.

Agreed...gotta keep an "eye" on this one. Even if it does not hit 'cun, your flight may have to manuever around the storm to get there.

"Hurricane Dean" doesn't sound good in a sound bite, so I don't think it's going to amount to much...now if it had a better name that would be different.

I just looked at the link of the previous poster, can't see how that is anywhere near Cancun. Dean looks to be going between Haiti and Jamaica, not this way at all. The other little red dots above Cancun are a different tropical depression moving away from us. Don't panic!

Again, the National Hurricane Center site is the best option for predictions....here's their latest five day path....

Not so sure Kelly, it's where it goes after Haiti/Jamaica that we need to wonder about. Two of the several models shown suggest close calls.

But then if you look at the history (of all past August hurricanes within 300 miles of where Dean is right now) most of them veer northwards. The northwards movement this one seemed to have a day or two appears to have been supressed somewhat. But then again most of the past hurricanes didnt move North until further along their path.

One thing is almost for sure though, it will increase in intensity as it crosses the warm Caribbean waters. Still far too early to make any assumptions or take panic measures though.

Side note: Tropical Storm Erin has just formed in the Gulf and is headed straight for the southern tip of Texas. Thankfully, my babies and their grandparents left Mustang Island back for San Antonio yesterday...

Way to early for anything accurate yet. Almost a week away yet.

Every update has taken it further South. In a few days it's be heading for Venezuela. :)

If your generator has been sitting all year and you forget to drain the gas out of it, it would pay to pull it out now and clean out the gas lines and run it on some fresh gas.

If you leave it until just before the hurricane and you don't have the skills to dismantle and clean out carburettors yourself, you may find the engine fixit man is too busy to help you.
