MY LOG!!!

Please note that we were only in Cancun, Mexico for only ONE week

Saturday, Nov.13th, 2004

Flight: Departed from Edmonton at 12:30 a.m. then in Toronto there was a 4hr layover and we arrived in Cancun around 3:00 p.m.

Airport Pick-Up: As scheduled Brant sent a driver (Luis) with my name on a clipboard to find us at the airport. Luis was a bit late and we were a little worried that we were going to be stranded at the airport but when he showed up he helped us with our luggage and was helpful giving his take on Cancun. It is required that you pay 70% upon arrival and 20% upon departure in US dollars. Also if you purchase the 2x1 Cards like we did they are $15 each. We asked for 2 cards since there were 2 couples. Luis was kind so we gave him a $5 tip and asked that he be the one to pick us up for the departure. I had been told by Brant that our driver would have our 2x1 Cards with him but Luis did not. I was a little hesitant at first to pay Luis the extra $30 US when I wasn’t getting the cards in my hand but Luis told me that they would be delivered to my hotel and to check with the front desk. So I trusted Luis and gave him the money.
Check-in: The Royal Mayan - Villa F119. The process was quick and easy as each person received their own key card. This card also acts as a credit card on any of the Royal Resort properties. I was filling in a sheet for the check-in when this guy walks up to me and asks if my name is Vanessa Bussey so I said yes and he gave me this envelope with my name on it. He took off as soon as it was in my hand so I hurriedly opened the envelope to find that it was the 2x1 Cards along with a map, a list of restaurants and some helpful tips.

Supper: Captains Cove ~ gave us 10% off the bill because we were staying at The Royal Mayan.

Hotel: Went to sleep at around midnight.

Sunday, Nov. 14th, 2004

Breakfast: Bought bacon, eggs, bread, peanut butter, jam and orange juice at The Royal Mayan grocery store. Total $21.00 US, which is comparable to the other grocery store prices in Cancun.
Welcome Information Session: At 10:30 a.m. The Royal Caribbean offered information for guests about the Royal Resorts and a bit about Mexico. We only went to kill our curiosity but in the end it really was not necessary although an Interval representative booked with us a FREE buffet breakfast and FREE buffet lunch for the Wednesday.

Welcome Party: At 1:00 p.m. The Royal Islander had a popcorn and open bar party for guests. A few different beers as well as Rum and Coke were handed out to the ones dedicated to stand in the long line ups. I asked for 2 Rum and Cokes at the same time so that I wouldn’t have to stand in the line up again so soon. Fun music and entertainment, a congo line, follow along dances and games, water balloon toss were provided. If you plan to attend and participate come in your bathing suit or at least have it underneath your clothes in case so then afterwards you can go straight to the beach right when the party is over.

Email: I went to the Business Center at The Royal Islander to quickly email home to my parents who would want to know that I arrived safely.

Beach: Spent the rest of the day at the beach. Then Trevor, my boyfriend and I swam in the pool and ordered a drink at the swim up bar. We tried a “Pai Ai” which was so delicious it became my drink of choice. I liked that you could eat your cup! They carve out most of a pineapple and put like a margarita mixture inside then they use toothpicks to put fruit back onto the pineapple for your eating pleaure.

Rented Car: Trevor’s parents who were with us rented a car for the next day. Elite, next to Thomas Moore in the main lobby of The Royal Mayan, kindly gave the car to us earlier then expected at 6:30 p.m. that Sunday night. Price per day was around $55 US.

Restaurant: With the rented car we drove to find “Stefano’s” a restaurant listed on Brant’s 2x1 Card with no luck. So we decided to check out “Rosa Mexicano” instead which is also on the 2x1 Card list and were we ever so happy with our meals, drinks, the atmosphere and service.

Club: Trevor and I were dropped of at “Plaza Las Americas” to try the club “Mambo Cafe” where females pay $5 US and males pay $6 US cover charge. Once we were inside and sat down to start ordering drinks it was 10:00 p.m. and the place was empty. Loud videos in Spanish were playing on a big white projection screen in front of the stage. At about 11:45 p.m. they raised the screen for the band to play but they didn’t come out until midnight. We stayed for 2 songs and left, as the band wasn’t that great and there were only 3 or 4 couples dancing on the dance floor. We found Taxi’s at the exit and asked one how much it would cost to get back to The Royal Mayan and he said 120 Pesos, which sounded good to us since it would get us home quicker. We ended up giving the taxi driver 150 Pesos.

Hotel: Went to sleep at 12:45 a.m.

Monday, Nov. 15th, 2004

Breakfast:Toast in our Villa.

Mall:With the rented car Trevor’s parents dropped us off at “Plaza Las Americas” to do some shopping. Prices are not negotiable in this mall but some stores are unique and gave us good souvenirs to bring back for others. Trevor also found a shirt at this quite expensive store that carried imported jerseys from Europe that he liked and bought. We then went to the bus stop outside the mall we expected the bus to cost us 6 Pesos each but the bus driver gave the 1 Peso coin back to us making it only 5 Pesos each! We asked the bus driver to tell us where “Mercado 28” was and he kindly pointed us in the direction but it would have been helpful if he had of stopped right in front of the market. We knew what direction to walk in so we just kept walking until we found it about 3 blocks down and on the left hand side of the street. We were on the opposite side of the street so we just had to cross the road when there were no vehicles coming since pedestrians do NOT have the right of way.

Market: “Mercado 28” has great little shops filled with a variety of things. You can find the exact same things in the Hotel Zone but they are much more expensive. “Mercado 28” costs less since you are able to negotiate prices. Trevor and I bought rings for each other and Trevor found an awesome pair of sunglasses that look fabulous on him! I found some cool t-shirts for my parents and some cute souvenirs to bring back for my brother and his girlfriend and we both bought little souvenirs to bring back to all of our friends too. After our day of bartering we asked a Taxi how much it would cost to get us to the mall “La Isla” and he answered 120 Pesos. We had to think about it and then decided to go ahead and do it for the speed factor and that we really didn’t know which bus to take and in which direction to go in order to get back to the Hotel Zone. We ended up giving the taxi driver 140 Pesos.

Mall: At “La Isla” we walked around looking at mostly similar stores as what we saw earlier in the day but didn’t buy anything other than splurging on a Slurpee or Slushie like drink at one of the Kiosk’s. We didn’t buy anything else since we pretty much had already bought everything we needed for our friends and family but we enjoyed looking around and sat on a bench near the lagoon for a short rest. We then took the Bus for 6 Pesos per person back to our hotel to drop off the bags of goodies and got ready to go out for supper.

Restaurant: We took the bus from our hotel for only a few blocks so that we could get off and walk the rest of the way to the restaurant able to enjoy the gorgeous weather. “Ok Maguey” is listed on Brant’s 2x1 Card and offered really good food and live Marimba and Mariachi musicians. Here we had our first encounter with someone that takes your picture with a digital camera and then returns with the 2 pictures developed asking for $10 US for only one out of the two pictures taken. We played along since we didn’t know what to expect and that we had no choice when he took it upon himself to put us in costume. Later he came back with one picture just in a folder with a design of some sort and the other was our picture on the label of a Dos XX beer bottle. Trevor and I thought the label on the bottle was a great idea so we bought it for $10 US. After supper Trevor’s parents picked us up from the restaurant and gave us a ride back to the hotel.

Hotel: Went to sleep around 11:00 p.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 16th, 2004

Breakfast: Toast in our Villa.

Tour: Xcaret. Our hotel pick up was scheduled for 7:00 a.m. - 7:15 a.m. by the Grey Line Bus tour company. The bus did not arrive until 7:25 a.m. and then we had to stop at every hotel on the way to where the Grey Line Buses depart. Playa Tortugas Market is where you will stand in a long line waiting to pay for your tour so have your voucher and money ready. Then they give you a ticket that you will show to the tour guide standing in front of the bus with the same number on the ticket stub. The guide should be checking his list to see if your name is on the clipboard they are holding. We finally arrived in Xcaret at 10:15 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. was when our bus was scheduled to leave because we decided not to attend the night show. Strangely not a bus but a van was waiting for us which then became packed so full that a lady had to have her child sit on her lap without a seat belt for the entire ride. Everyone was on time and was ready to go but the van still left at 5:15 p.m. good thing the van dropped us off at the front door of our hotel.

Overall “Xcaret” was very good. I loved the underground rivers. My suggestion is to spend an entire day there if you would like to see and do almost everything. Bring extra money if you plan on eating at the restaurants there since they are not included in the entry fee. Also note that if you are bringing your own sun block in with you they take it away from you, put a number on your bracelet that matches the number on the sticker they put on the bottle then you can pick it up once you leave the park. Since they take your sunscreen away from you they give you one, and only one, little sample pack of ecological sunscreen to use for the entire day. If you burn easily my suggestion is to buy the eco safe sunscreen when you first arrive in Cancun or buy the kind of sunscreen that they sell at “Xcaret” since there is a chance that they still might tell you that yours isn’t good enough even if you bought it in Cancun 2 days earlier.

Restaurant: “Fat Tuesday” another restaurant listed on Brant’s 2x1 Card. The food here is pretty much just what an average appetizer menu would have and the portions are small. This place is pretty much for drinking and dancing. I did like that they have tables and a dance floor outside on the patio, which gets a nice cool breeze from the beach. We went on a Tuesday night, which was supposed to be a Mardi Gras theme, and the table next to us had a different waiter who brought them strands of beads (without having to flash) but our table got nothing even though we ordered over 15 drinks between 4 people. After we spent a lot of money there on food and drinks and tip our waiter did end up giving us our Yard Glasses to take home.

Bar: Trevor really wanted to try “Coco Bongo” but the line up was so long that we decided to try “Senor Frogs” instead. There was a $5 US cover charge per person but with that you got a free Yard Glass and they had a live Reggae band! Of course we had to spend over $20 per person to fill both of our Yard Glasses but only do that if you can handle yourself. We didn’t stay late because Trevor got sick from a little too much tequila… I asked a Taxi how much it would cost to get from “Senor Frogs” to The Royal Mayan and he answered 110 Pesos. From prior experience and knowing very well that it should not cost that much from where we were to only go 5 blocks down the road we decided to take the bus for 6 Pesos per person instead.

Hotel: Went to sleep around 1:00 a.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 17th, 2004

Breakfast: We met Vinny our personal concierge, Lea a personal concierge in training and Andrew the Interval time-share representative at The Royal Caribbean Business Center room. They had a shuttle pick us up to take us to The Royal Sands. When we arrived Vinny and Lea left to do some other work and left Andrew with us to take us to for our FREE buffet breakfast. During and after breakfast Andrew kept his approach calm and relaxed and did not pressure my boyfriend’s parents into buying into the Timeshare world. Andrew showed them all of their options and then gave them a deal they could not pass up. A family in Florida’s home was hit by a hurricane and could not afford to keep their timeshare anymore so the selling price had been dropped by $10,000 US. So Barb and Herb benefited from someone else’s loss, which is a little sad but a good deal at the same time. Everyone has their own opinions but personally I think that doing the Timeshare thing is better than going All Inclusive. When you are somewhere in the world don’t you think that you want to explore what is outside the hotel and the meals and drinks they serve in that country? The most exciting part about going to another country for me is getting to see all the different places and trying the food and drinks at different restaurants!

Lunch: Andrew did not join us for our FREE buffet lunch at The Royal Sands but did promise to join us for another FREE lunch on the Friday afternoon. We spent the last few hours of sunlight at the beach and in the pools at The Royal Sands. Later we returned to our Villa to shower and change. Trevor’s parents had not yet been to “Mercado 28” so we took the rented car there for them to do some bartering of their own.

Restaurant: “Planet Hollywood” did NOT make a good impression with these 4 Canadians. The minute we sat down the lights went out and blaring music came on. We could not read the menu to decide what we wanted to eat and we couldn’t hear what one another were saying even though we were sitting side by side. We asked the waitress to help us see the menu with her flashlight but in turn she got the lights turned up in the restaurant, which was helpful. We also asked her if they could lower the volume of the music and she was able to get them to turn it down. Unfortunately that only lasted for less than 5 minutes and by that time we had already ordered and had given her our 2x1 Cards and we knew that we wouldn’t get the cards back unless we stayed, finished our food and got our bill. We asked her 4 more times throughout our time there for them to turn the volume down even just slightly but there was no response from anyone. So needless to say as soon as we were done we were out of there and agreed to never recommend that place to anyone.

Hotel: Went to sleep around 11:30 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 18th, 2004

Breakfast: Toast in our Villa.

Tour: Again we were supposed to be picked up at our hotel at 7:00 a.m. - 7:15 a.m. for the “Tulum/Xel-Ha All Inclusive” tour but the Grey Line Tour bus did not arrive until 7:20 a.m. to take us to Playa Tortugas once again to stand in a long line up waiting to pay and get our ticket stub to get on the bus. We first stopped in “Xel-Ha” to drop off the people who were spending the full day there then we traveled 15 minutes or so to “Tulum” where our tour guides on the bus told us that the bus would be leaving at 12:15 p.m. but that if we were back at 12:16 p.m. that we were not to worry that they would not leave without us. The tour guides also recommended that we purchase a $2 US Trolley ticket that would take us to and from the site. If we chose not to buy a Trolley ticket for the round trip it would cost the same $2 US for just the return trip alone. We bought 2 round trip Trolley tickets for $4 US since it was a super hot day and we knew that we would not want to walk back later. At 12:05 p.m. we snapped our last picture. Shortly after that we hopped on the trolley that had been filling up with people and there we sat for 5 minutes waiting and thinking why are we waiting? Then a group of elderly men and women called out loudly to the Trolley driver to not leave because there were 2 more elderly women coming. The 2 women finally came and got on the Trolley and as soon as the Trolley stopped moving Trevor and I quickly jumped off. We walked directly past all the gift shops and guys trying to sell us stuff to find our bus in the parking lot. We ran around the entire parking lot unable to find our bus so we asked an older American lady who was sitting eating a snack what time it was and she said 12:20 p.m. I then said “Oh no! I think we missed our bus.” The lady asked me what time our bus was supposed to leave and I answered 12:15 p.m. She then told me that her bus was supposed to leave at 12:15 p.m. but it was still waiting and she pointed to it. She then told me to find a guy with a walkie-talkie to help us out if we needed to find our bus. I thanked her and ran around the entire parking lot 2 more times to try and find our bus. I spotted a guy with a walkie-talkie and asked him to help us find our bus or if he could help us if we missed our bus. The guy with the walkie-talkie asked me where I was going and I answered “Xel-Ha”. He then told me to take a TAXI. I told him that we had no money and that we had already paid Grey Line for our supposed “All Inclusive” day and pointed to the sticker on my shirt. He then motioned for one of the buses that was leaving the parking lot to stop. Fortunately for us this was also a Grey Line bus going to “Xel-Ha” so we were allowed onto the bus. Once at “Xel-Ha” the tour guide from the bus we just caught pointed us in the direction of our original bus. We recognized the people inside and they opened the doors and one of the female tour guides got out of the bus to give us our bracelets to enter the park. This female tour guide then showed us to the front entrance and asked us if we were “in the shops?” and I quickly answered “No we were not in the shops. We were looking all around for the bus.” I didn’t have time to finish letting her know or explaining to her that the Trolley made us wait at the other end while she and the Bus took off without us because she cut in by saying with attitude “Well the bus opens at 4:45 p.m. and we leave at 5:00 p.m. sharp so don’t be late.” So Trevor and I made our first stop at a restaurant since it was all you could eat and drink all day at any of the 5 restaurants. The food at the buffet was already prepared so we decided that would be the quickest so we could get going to the other attractions. We didn’t get to do too much since we only had a few hours before we needed to be back at the bus for the ride back. Trevor and I made sure that we were ready to go at 5:30 p.m. and got on the bus at 5:40 p.m. then as we were walking to our seats the same female tour guide asked my name so that she could check it off on her list. When I looked down at the list of names my name was the only one without a check mark beside it meaning that they were accounted for coming from “Tulum”. I pointed out my name to the female tour guide and said “Vanessa Bussey” that’s us, thank you” and walked upstairs to our seats on the double decker bus. What makes me angry most of all is that the bus WAITED for over 15 minutes and didn’t leave until this other family got on the bus at the end of the day. This family was late but the bus did not leave them behind. The bus waited over 15 minutes for this other family but didn’t even wait 5 minutes for Trevor and I. We were not impressed.

Overall “Tulum” was cool but there’s not that many ruins at that site so the walk around is pretty short. I love ruins and I’m glad I got to see “Tulum”.

Overall “Xel-Ha” was awesome but sadly we didn’t get to do everything because we didn’t have enough time. My suggestion is that you go to “Xel-Ha All Inclusive” for an entire day. That’s what I am going to do when I go back to Cancun. It’s great that you have all you can eat and drink all day at any of the restaurants there plus a locker for you personal belongings, snorkel gear, life vests, inner tubes, towels and more!

Restaurant: We ordered the all you can eat shrimp and “El Shrimp Bucket”. The “Scampi” option was our favorite from the 3 other options, which were “Fajita” coming in second and then the “Deep Fried” was third, and finally the “Beer Batter”.

Friday, November 19th, 2004

Breakfast: Toast in our Villa.

Tour: Trevor really wanted me to schedule in the “Jungle Tour” so I did for 9:00 a.m. with a speedboat. Once you pay they give you a snorkel in a plastic bag that you can take home with you. You can put all of your personal belonging into a locker but please note that you do not get to keep the key to the locker. One of the employees there keeps the key so you have to find that person when you return from the tour. If you think about it they have access to that locker anytime so I would not bring anything valuable. It was a very windy day but we didn’t feel just how windy it actually was until we were out in the open sea. The waves crashed all around us making the trip extremely bumpy. After the tour guides gathered all the boats together each person was given a mask to help you snorkel. When we were in the water the waves didn’t feel any calmer so we tried to enjoy the reef as best we could. The visibility of the reef was average and we were told that the water wasn’t as clear as it could have been but it was still nice to see.

Overall the Jungle Tour would be good if there wasn’t any wind and the only way I would ever do it again is if there was a Green flag by the beach. My suggestion is that if you look at the flag by your beach and if it is a Red flag cancel the Jungle Tour unless you have your sea legs.

Lunch: FREE lunch at one of the restaurants at The Royal Caribbean.

Amenity: Trevor and I played Tennis for about an hour in the hot sun

Hotel: Trevor and I packed our bags so that we didn’t have to feel all rushed to get it done first thing in the morning.

Restaurant: “Iguana Wana” also on Brant’s 2x1 list is located in the “Playa Caracol” mall and there’s average seating. The food was very good and I must admit that this was one of my favorite meals during the week.

Club: “Azucar” located in the quiet corner by the Hotel of Dreams. You could tell that they do not let just anyone into this club as it has a slight dress code and cover charge was $9 US per person. We arrived at 11:00 p.m. and found that the atmosphere was relaxing. You also had a view of the sea out of the huge windows right behind the stage. The staff caters to your needs and makes you feel very comfortable. The DJ played a good variety of songs to dance to before the live Salsa and Merengue band went on stage. The band came on stage at about midnight and was superb! We had to catch a plane the next morning so we didn’t get to stay for very long. When we asked the Taxi driver how much it would cost he said 90 Pesos, which was a good deal for us so we took the taxi home!

Hotel: Went to sleep at 1:00 a.m.

Saturday, Nov. 20th, 2004

Breakfast: Toast in our Villa. We ate all of the breakfast leftovers and then whatever we found was still good we gave it to our maid, Maria. The maids appreciate anything that you give them!

Mall: “La Isla” was calling me back to buy this picture frame I had seen. Trevor and I took the bus for 6 Pesos each there and back so that’s 12 Pesos per person round trip. I saw the same exact picture frame at the “Playa Caracol” mall for 99 Pesos but this lady was selling it at a little kiosk at “La Isla” for 110 Pesos. I bartered her down to 100 Pesos because I didn’t want to have to pay more when I saw it for less at the other mall.

Airport Return Trip Pick-Up: Brant was to schedule someone at 11:30 a.m. to come pick us up to take us back to the Airport. We checked out of our Villa at 11:00 a.m. and were ready and by the front doors waiting for our pick-up. Lucky for us it was Luis again! He arrived at 11:15 a.m. which worked out perfectly as it gave us time to catch up and helped us beat the rush when we arrived at the Airport.

Airport: At the airport the first stop expect them to open and search your bags. Next make sure you have your passport, flight tickets and the Mexican Tourist Entry paper that they give you when you arrived in Mexico. Then your luggage goes through the xray machine and you walk through the metal detector. After all that you find your gate from which you depart on a shuttle that takes you to your plane. Once on the plane relax because you might be in for a delay. There was a maintenance problem that took them 2.5 hours to have someone finally come and then to actually fix the problem.

Flight: Our flight from Cancun to Toronto was fine. We were supposed to have a layover in Toronto but because of the delay in Cancun we didn’t have to wait but that made us almost miss our connecting flight! Once in Toronto the shuttle took us from one side of the airport to the other and then we had to RUN to find our gate. We found our gate just in time to get on the plane home to Edmonton!

Comments I made @ http://www.entertainment-plus.net/cgi-bin/review/stars.cgi

The Royal Mayan is enjoyable for all ages but we found that mostly elderly folk stay here. These folk are all time-share owners and have been going there for many years. With that being the case and not a lot of youngin's running around it was very quite and peaceful.

We found it nice that no one had to fight for chairs by the pool or by the beach since it wasn't crowded.

Our Villa - F119 was a walkout on the ground level so we were a bit spoiled for our first time-share exchange. The kitchen was fully equipped and could sleep a maximum of 6 people. 2 of us slept in the A side and the other 2 slept on the B side of the Villa. We all shared the kitchen and living room, both bedrooms had walk out patio doors and both sides had full bathrooms. TV and radio were available but we chose not to use them and instead went on tours, soaked up the sun, and dined at different restaurants. I suggest you purchase Brant's 2x1 Card as it will bring you GREAT savings as it did for us!

We did not eat at any of the restaurants located on the property but we did order drinks from the swim up bar ~ try the "Pai Ai" it became our drink of choice!

We did buy a few groceries at the store onsite and found it comparable to local stores in Cancun.

Internet access is available at different times throughout the week so just ask the front desk for that information, costing $5 US for 15 minutes.

You may use any of the Royal Resorts during your stay just make sure to bring your room key with you to act as your credit card.

We found the staff to be very friendly and were helpful to answer our questions.

The "personal concierge" given to us did not do much. I found that it's way to encourage the purchase of a time-share. If you decide to follow along you might get something out of it for free like a tour or a meal.

I hope that this information helps someone out there!!!

Vanessa, many thanks for your great trip report. I hope you dont mind but I split it off from the other thread as I think it will get more visibility in it's own thread and there is a lot of valuable info there.

Good to hear you got some good discounts with Brants card, at $15 then you must have saved several times over. As I always say, Brants card is good but only if you use it! Looks like you used it many times. Laughing

Surprised you didnt like Mambo Cafe too much but great that you made your way downtown to try it out, maybe you was a little early, normally things really hot up about 1am - late I know.

Xel Ha, I agree there is to much to see and do at Xel Ha to cram it in to just an afternoon - a full day is better.

Taxis - I couldnt believe some of those prices blueshock please, next time try and negotiate some lower ones, and tips aren't necessary although the drivers will not say no wink still, sometimes if it gets you home quicker than the bus then it may be worthwhile. Just for comparison I went to Senor Frogs last night and my trip home to downtown (pretty close to Plaza las Americas) cost me 40 pesos. I did have to send away 2 taxis before I got that price. Basically, my advice is propose your own price - if you dont know the going rate then ask how much - but half it and then stick to it, if they dont agree flag another one.

Thanks again for your great report

Nice report!

I agree with Steve on the taxi prices tho.....you really should negotiate lower fares an no tipping them...it's already included in the price they quote ya.

Great report...

Like Steve said, I think you probably got to Mambo Cafe a bit on the early side.

It usually doesn't get going till late...around 1:00 AM like Steve said.

Very nice report .. But i would never try those taxi Because everyone told me they are very high in price .. OR try to negotiate with them .. I rather use the very amusing bus system they have there Laughing Laughing

thank you for all of the replies to my log!

they were helpful especially about the Taxi prices. next time i will be a little more firm with lowering the price. i must admit i kind of knew that we were paying too much. it was okay with us since it was our first time there. we didn't know our way around town and for the convenience we just went with it.

...we did take the bus a lot so we did save money that way but thanks again for the advice it will help with the next trip to Cancun!

Good Trip Report, nicely laid out too. There's been some great TR's lately, I like! Very Happy

We took a few taxis last year also, though bussed it mostly. Sometimes, it was easier to just flump into a cab than trundle to the bus stop in me heels...!
