Cancun Deep Sea Fishing
Cancun deep sea fishing ranges from shared boat trips to private charters where your group has the boat to itself. Offshore, the main attractions include sailfish, marlin, mahi-mahi, tuna and wahoo, while bottom fishing offers a different kind of day. Decide what you want to catch, how long you want to spend at sea and whether you want to share before comparing the boats.

A shared boat makes sense for a couple or solo angler who does not want to pay for a whole charter. A private boat gives you more say over the pace and type of fishing. A smaller panga out of Puerto Morelos can be a good alternative for a small group, provided you allow for the journey south from Cancun.
The options below include a private Cancun charter with hotel pickup available at an additional cost. The shared Cancun trip and Puerto Morelos trip require your own marina arrival. For other ways to spend a day on the water, compare Cancun water sports or browse our Cancun tours.
If you were looking for light tackle or fly fishing in the lagoon, try Cancun lagoon fishing on Nichupté. These smaller-boat trips focus on casting around mangroves and channels rather than heading offshore.
At a glance
Allow: four to six hours on the water for these main options, plus check-in and transport.
Best for: solo anglers and couples on shared boats, or families and friends booking privately.
Main trade-off: shared trips cost per person; private charters cost per boat and offer more flexibility.
Check before paying: fishing style, total passenger limit, licence and dock charges, departure point and hotel transport.
Compare Cancun fishing trips
Start with the departure point and whether you are buying a place or a whole boat. The two Cancun trips are run by Marina Chac Chi; the Puerto Morelos charter is a smaller boat with Team Mauricio Adventures. The private prices cover different passenger limits and trip lengths, so the lowest boat price is not automatically the best value for your group.

Shared Deep Sea Fishing Tour in Cancun with Drinks
This tour is the straightforward option if you want to go fishing without organizing a whole group. You pay per person and join no more than five other travelers for around six hours. Marina Chac Chi supplies the rods, reels, tackle and bait, along with your fishing licence, beer, water and soft drinks.
Make your own way to Puerto Xtabay on the road to Punta Sam and follow the check-in instructions on your booking. The dock fee is US$20 per person and lunch is not included. Expect to share the crew’s attention and the fishing action with the other anglers, rather than setting the day’s plan yourself.
Private Half-Day Sport Fishing Charter in Cancun
This tour gives your group its own boat and crew. The listing offers four-, six- and eight-hour charter choices for up to eight passengers. Choose the length deliberately and select your preferred duration before comparing the total cost.
Rods, reels, tackle, bait, fishing licences and drinks are included. The dock fee is US$20 per person. Hotel pickup can be requested, but transport costs extra and depends on where you are staying. Check the transfer quote and pickup arrangements before paying; the word pickup in the listing does not mean it is included in the boat price.
Private Deep Sea Fishing Charter – Puerto Morelos
This trip is a different proposition: a private 25-foot panga for up to four people, leaving Puerto Morelos for around four hours. Captain Mauricio and his crew use trolling and bottom-fishing techniques, adjusting the trip to the group’s experience and the season. It suits a small party that prefers a shorter private outing to a larger sport fishing yacht.
Meet at Faro Inclinado, the leaning lighthouse beside the dock in central Puerto Morelos. Hotel pickup is not listed, so arrange your own journey from Cancun in both directions. The package includes fishing gear, bait, water, a shade canopy and catch cleaning. A US$16 government fee per person and meals are extra; check how the fishing licence is arranged as it is not separately itemized.
Cancun fishing seasons by month
Spring and early summer are the main period to consider for offshore sailfish, marlin and mahi-mahi. Winter still has worthwhile targets, including wahoo and barracuda. Use the chart to choose a target species, then ask your captain what has been biting recently.
| Species | Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sailfish | S | P | P | P | P | P | G | L | L | L | L | G |
| Blue marlin | L | L | G | G | S | P | P | L | L | L | L | L |
| White marlin | L | L | S | P | P | P | P | L | L | L | L | L |
| Mahi-mahi (dorado) | L | L | S | P | P | P | P | G | L | L | L | L |

P = Peak: the strongest period in the calendar. S = Strong: a favorable period. G = Good: worth considering. L = Lower: not usually a main target in that calendar, rather than absent from the water.
Based on a local operator’s seasonal calendar for offshore fishing around Cancun and Isla Mujeres. Different captains and fishing grounds have different patterns. Wind, current, water conditions and recent catches matter when choosing the day’s target; the chart is not a current fishing report or a legal open-season calendar.
If catching a particular species is the main reason for your trip, choose the season first and then the boat and fishing method. For a general holiday outing, be open to the species that suit the conditions. A good captain can change the plan, but cannot make a fish bite.
Offshore trolling or bottom fishing?
Deep sea fishing usually means heading offshore and trolling bait or lures behind the boat for fish such as billfish, mahi-mahi or wahoo. There can be quiet spells between strikes, followed by a lot of activity. A photograph of a marlin on a listing does not mean every departure targets marlin or catches one.

Bottom fishing works a different part of the water, with bait lowered toward the seabed for suitable local species. A mixed trip may combine it with trolling. If you want plenty of hands-on fishing, compare the actual methods and time on the water rather than choosing solely by the size of the boat.
Should you book a shared boat or a private charter?
For one or two anglers, a shared trip avoids paying for empty places on a private boat. The compromise is that the crew chooses a plan for everyone and you share the available rods and fishing opportunities. It is worth understanding that arrangement before imagining six hours with a rod permanently in your hands.
For a family or group of friends, compare the total shared cost with a private charter for the same number of people. Include the dock fees and transport in both totals. A private booking may become attractive as your group grows, but the boat’s passenger capacity does not mean everyone can fish at the same time.
A shorter private trip can suit a mixed group better than a long offshore day. If some people would rather swim or watch marine life, compare Cancun snorkeling trips before committing everyone to fishing. Do not assume a fishing charter includes a snorkeling stop.
Marinas, hotel pickup and the full cost
Marina Chac Chi is the operator’s name, but its Hotel Zone marina and Puerto Xtabay are two different places. Both selected Cancun bookings currently give Puerto Xtabay, on the road to Punta Sam in Puerto Juarez, as their meeting point. Go to the departure address on your booking confirmation, rather than the operator’s Hotel Zone marina. Only the private option offers hotel pickup in the current listing, and it is an extra charge.
Puerto Morelos is south of Cancun and needs a separate road journey. Travel time depends on your hotel and traffic, so leave enough time for the transfer and finding the captain at the leaning lighthouse. The smaller boat’s four hours do not include your journey there and back.
Fishing licences, dock fees and other government charges are separate items. Read the inclusions for the exact option you select, then add any transport, meals and optional crew tip to your budget. A per-person price and a per-boat price only become comparable once you know how many people are going.
Can you keep and eat the fish?
That depends on the species, the rules and the captain’s catch policy. Some fish are released; legal eating fish may be kept within the permitted limits. Do not book on the assumption that every fish caught can come back to the dock.

The Puerto Morelos charter includes catch cleaning and can recommend a local restaurant to cook suitable fish. The meal costs extra. If eating your catch is part of the appeal, check the cleaning and cooking arrangements before booking, along with what the crew plans to release.
What to bring on a fishing trip
Bring your booking details, sun protection, sunglasses, a secure hat and shoes with a sensible grip. A light long-sleeved top is useful when you are out on the water for several hours. Keep a phone or camera in a waterproof bag and leave unnecessary valuables at the hotel.
Check the food and drink inclusions. The shared Cancun trip does not include lunch, and the Puerto Morelos trip includes water but not a meal. Bring only what the boat permits and keep bags small. Our Cancun packing list covers the rest of your holiday preparations.
Licences, sea conditions and who can take part
You need the appropriate sport fishing licence for boat fishing in Mexican waters. The two Marina Chac Chi packages list it as included; the Puerto Morelos package needs its licence arrangements checked. Confirm that the licence covers you, rather than assuming a dock payment is the same thing. Catch limits and seasonal closures still apply even when a fish is biting.
Offshore trips can be uncomfortable in rough seas, and port restrictions may prevent a departure. If you are prone to seasickness, plan ahead and get suitable advice before the trip. Leave some flexibility earlier in your stay so a weather change does not leave you without another available day.
Read the selected boat’s age and participation rules, particularly for children or anyone with mobility or medical needs. These listings are not wheelchair accessible, and the Puerto Morelos listing advises against participation with back problems. A private boat offers flexibility, but it does not remove the need to board safely or cope with the sea conditions.
