Mercado 28 Cancun

Mercado 28, also called Market 28, is downtown Cancun’s best-known stop for souvenir shopping. Come for colourful stalls, Mexican crafts, clothing and a meal between shops. Expect an active sales pitch and some bargaining, rather than the fixed-price, air-conditioned experience of a mall.

It is worth knowing what you want from the outing. If you enjoy browsing and comparing prices, it can be a fun break from the Hotel Zone. If being invited into shop after shop sounds exhausting, keep the visit short or choose one of the malls in our Cancun Shopping guide.

At a glance

  • Best for: souvenirs, crafts, clothing and a casual meal.
  • Location: downtown Cancun, around Avenida Xel-Há beside Plaza Bonita.
  • Market 28 or Mercado 28? Two names for the same market.
  • When to go: late morning is a practical choice for browsing followed by lunch; individual businesses set their own hours.
  • Bring: pesos in small notes, water and a little patience for comparing prices.

What is Mercado 28 like?

Mercado 28 is a collection of independently run shops and restaurants, with passages to wander through and plenty of similar-looking goods to compare. It is a shopping market, rather than an attraction with a timed entrance or a guided route. There is no need to book a tour simply to browse.

The market’s own directory includes craft sellers, clothing, jewellery, leather goods, sweets and tequila shops, along with restaurants. It is particularly geared towards visitors buying something to take home. That does not make every item handmade, locally produced or a bargain, so ask about the things that matter to you before buying.

Is Market 28 the same as Mercado 28?

Yes. Mercado is Spanish for market. Searches for “Market 28 Cancun” and “Mercado 28 Cancun” are referring to the same downtown market. Use the Spanish name with a driver, and check the location around Avenida Xel-Há rather than choosing a shop solely because it has “28” on its sign.

What can you buy at Market 28?

There is plenty to browse even if you only want a small gift. Start with an idea of your budget and how much room you have in your luggage, especially if ceramics, glassware or a large hat catches your eye.

  • Small souvenirs: look for gifts that are easy to pack, and check that the item you are handed is the one you chose.
  • Clothing and textiles: check sizing, stitching and fabric rather than judging only by the colours on display.
  • Crafts and decorative pieces: ask where an item was made if local production matters to you. Similar designs do not necessarily mean the same quality.
  • Jewellery and leather: compare materials and workmanship. An expensive purchase deserves more checking than a keyring.
  • Tequila, mezcal and sweets: compare a labelled, sealed product with a supermarket price before assuming the market is cheaper.

For breakable goods, ask how they will be wrapped and think about the journey home. For a substantial purchase, agree the total price and ask for a receipt before handing over your payment.

Prices, bargaining and paying in pesos

There is no useful price list for the whole of Mercado 28. Each business sets its own prices, and apparently similar products can differ in quality. Browse a few stalls before committing, especially for something you have seen everywhere.

How to bargain without making it awkward

Ask the price first, then make a polite offer if it is the sort of souvenir sale where negotiation is welcome. You do not need to start an argument or follow a rule that everything must be reduced by a particular percentage. If the price does not suit you, say thanks and move on.

There is also no need to bargain over every small purchase. A posted food price or a clearly priced everyday item is a different situation from negotiating for several souvenirs. Buying more than one item may make a conversation about the total worthwhile, but agree that total before the goods are packed.

Cash, cards and dollar prices

Carry pesos in smaller notes so a modest purchase does not become a search for change. Ask about card acceptance before choosing something expensive. If offered a dollar price, compare the final peso amount rather than mentally treating the currencies as interchangeable. Our Cancun currency guide explains the everyday payment choices.

If a seller’s approach is too persistent for your taste, a clear “no, gracias” is enough. You do not owe anyone a purchase because they showed you a product. Keep shopping at your own pace and avoid handing over money until the item, quantity and price are clear.

Food and restaurants at Mercado 28

You can break up the shopping with lunch rather than rushing back to the hotel. The market directory lists several restaurants, including El Cejas and El Veracruz. Walk around, look at the actual menus and choose the meal you want instead of sitting down at the first invitation.

Check whether a displayed price is for one item, a full meal or a larger order, and ask about drinks before ordering. If seafood is charged by weight, establish the weight and total price first. You can enjoy a casual market lunch without treating it as an eating challenge or trying everything in one sitting.

If you would rather make a restaurant the main event, our Downtown Cancun Restaurants guide offers other options for the same trip into town.

Opening hours and how long to spend

Plan Mercado 28 as a daytime outing. Late morning followed by lunch is a sensible starting point: you can browse before eating and still return with plenty of the day left. The shops and restaurants operate independently, so do not rely on one closing time for every business.

If there is a particular shop you want to visit, check its own hours before making the journey. Very early or late visits make less sense when the purpose is to compare several stalls. An individual restaurant staying open does not mean the whole market will be trading.

Allow roughly one to two hours for a browse, with longer if you stop for lunch or enjoy shopping. That is a planning suggestion, not a fixed itinerary. You can leave as soon as you have had enough, and there is little benefit in forcing another circuit after you have bought what you came for.

Getting to Mercado 28 from the Hotel Zone

Mercado 28 is in downtown Cancun around Avenida Xel-Há, beside Plaza Bonita. It is not in the Hotel Zone. Save the market’s location on your phone before leaving so you can check where you have arrived.

Bus or taxi?

A downtown-bound Hotel Zone bus can be an economical way into town, but confirm the actual stop with the driver. A bus going to Centro does not necessarily stop at the market entrance. Check the remaining walk, particularly if it is hot or someone in the group has difficulty walking.

A taxi is simpler if you want to go directly to the market or return with several bags. Agree the fare before setting off and use the market name and location, rather than just asking for souvenir shopping. Journey time and cost depend on where your hotel is; a resort south of Cancun is a different starting point from the northern Hotel Zone. Our Getting Around Cancun guide covers the general transport choices.

Finding the market you intended to visit

Check the map before getting out or accepting directions into a particular shop. A souvenir store using a similar name is not necessarily the multi-stall Mercado 28 you meant to visit. Plaza Bonita is a useful neighbouring landmark; the market’s own address is on Xel-Há.

Once there, take water, wear comfortable shoes and keep bags and phones close in busy passages. Covered sections provide shade, but this is not the same outing as spending an afternoon in an air-conditioned mall.

Mercado 23 is a separate market, not another entrance to Mercado 28. It also has crafts and places to eat, but food and everyday shopping are a stronger part of its character. You do not need to visit both just because their names are similar.

Choose Mercado 28 if browsing souvenir stalls is the point of your trip. Choose Plaza Las Américas and Malecón Américas for familiar brands, cinema and more of an indoor mall visit, or La Isla for Hotel Zone shopping with lagoon-side attractions. Our shopping overview compares the wider choice.
