Swim with Dolphins in Cancun
Dolphin encounters are still advertised in Cancun and nearby resorts, but the rules have changed. Before choosing one, consider where it takes place and whether a captive-dolphin experience is right for you.

These are encounters with captive dolphins, including those kept in enclosed seawater habitats. They are not swims with wild dolphins in the open Caribbean.
Several different programs are available which allow different levels of interactivity and amounts of time with the dolphins.
Some existing operations can continue under Mexico’s legal transition. That does not make every advertised program lawful. We have not independently verified the individual facilities’ authorizations, and do not recommend a particular dolphin swim at present.
Can you still swim with dolphins in Cancun?
Mexico’s federal wildlife reform took effect on 17 July 2025. It restricts the commercial use and breeding of marine mammals, while allowing previously approved activities to continue for existing registered animals under transitional rules.
For those cetaceans, contact is limited to free swimming and supervised interactions. Riding dolphins, swimming while holding their fins and being pushed through the water by dolphins are prohibited. Old photographs, reviews and program names may describe activities that can no longer be offered.
The reform also requires relocation within 18 months of the inventory submission to sea pens or another arrangement allowed by the law. That is a relocation requirement, rather than a single closing date for every dolphin encounter.
Where are dolphin encounters advertised?
Interactive Aquarium Cancun, La Isla
Delphinus advertises dolphin encounters at the Interactive Aquarium in La Isla Shopping Village, in the Hotel Zone.
La Isla is the ideal venue for those who don’t want the dolphin swim to take up the majority of their day.
Punta Cancun
Delphinus also advertises a dolphin facility at Hyatt Ziva Cancun, at Punta Cancun in the Hotel Zone.
Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres
Delphinus advertises encounters in Playa Mujeres, on the mainland north of central Cancun. Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres should not be confused with the island of Isla Mujeres.
Isla Mujeres and the Riviera Maya
Dolphin Discovery continues to advertise Isla Mujeres encounters, while Delphinus advertises other locations along the Riviera Maya, including Xcaret and Xel-Há.
Plan the island journey with our Isla Mujeres information, or compare the wider day out in our Xcaret guide.
Animal welfare: decide before you book
A seawater enclosure still keeps dolphins in captivity. Legal permission, an attractive setting and positive visitor reviews answer different questions; none alone establishes how the animals are cared for.
Delphinus describes veterinary care, enrichment, compatible social groups and allowing dolphins to decline interactions. Those are operator statements, rather than our independent assessment of each facility.
There are also documented enforcement concerns in Cancun. In an update dated 1 October 2026, Profepa reported continued supervision of nine seized dolphins at Dolphin Connection Cancun, formerly Dolphinaris Cancun, following the facility’s temporary closure in October 2025. That is a specific facility; it should not be confused with every operator or with a similarly named program elsewhere.
If you are uncomfortable supporting captive-animal encounters, skip the dolphin swim. You can still enjoy Cancun’s beaches, a visit to Isla Mujeres or other things to do in Cancun. For other activities on the water, compare Cancun water sports.
