Best Restaurants in Cancun

There is no single best restaurant in Cancun for every visitor. A quick taco lunch, a quiet dinner and a big night with music are three different plans. The right choice depends on where you are staying, who is coming with you and how much of the evening you want to spend getting there.

Start with the kind of meal you want, then narrow it by area and budget. If you are staying all-inclusive, you may only need one or two meals out. Make those meals count rather than collecting reservations you will not use. The restaurants below are grouped by the kind of meal and area, not ranked from first to last.

Choose the kind of night

  • A relaxed meal: put the menu, conversation and an easy journey home ahead of a show or a famous name.
  • A special dinner: decide whether the view, service, food or atmosphere matters most. Check what the full evening is likely to cost.
  • Food and a party: look for music and a lively crowd, but expect a different pace from a quiet dinner.
  • Good value: compare the meal and return transport together. A lower menu price across town may not mean a cheaper night.
  • Mexican food: think about the dishes you want to try, not just whether a restaurant has Mexican decor. A casual place may be a better fit than an elaborate dinner.

Hotel Zone or Downtown?

If you are staying in the Hotel Zone, eating nearby can make a lot of sense. There are casual choices as well as lagoon-side dinners and restaurants built around music or a show. The strip is long, though: check the exact location before assuming a restaurant is close to your hotel.

Downtown gives you a broader everyday mix and more scope for a straightforward meal. It is worth considering when you want to get beyond resort dining or keep the food itself central to the evening. From a Hotel Zone hotel, allow for the journey both ways and choose a particular destination before you set off.

Neither area is automatically the better value. A Hotel Zone dinner may cost more but save you travel; a Downtown meal may give you more choice for the money. For the layout of the Hotel Zone and travel between it and Downtown, see Getting Around Cancun. Our Food & Drink in Cancun overview helps with the broader meal choice. For this decision, pin down your hotel, restaurant and return trip on a map before you book.

Hotel Zone dinners and views

These Hotel Zone choices range from dinner with a show to seafood beside the lagoon. The first four have individual Cancuncare guides; the others give you different kinds of evening to compare.

Porfirio’s Cancun: Mexican dinner with a show atmosphere

Porfirio’s Cancun is an option when you want a polished Mexican dinner and a lively setting rather than a simple meal. Look at the menu and the evening’s format before booking, especially if conversation is the priority.

Rosa Negra Cancun: a lively occasion

Rosa Negra Cancun is another occasion-led choice, with Latin American food and a performance-driven atmosphere. It may suit a group that wants dinner to feel like the start of a night out. If you want a quiet table, check that the setting is right for you.

Ilios Cancun: Greek food and an evening out

Ilios Cancun pairs Greek and Mediterranean food with a lively, lagoon-side setting. Consider it when the atmosphere is part of the plan, and check the current menu and reservation terms before committing.

Señor Frog’s Cancun: food plus party bar

Señor Frog’s Cancun is a different proposition: a casual meal can turn into drinks and a party. Choose it for that mood, rather than expecting the pace of a conventional dinner.

Navíos: seafood and a quieter lagoon evening

At the southern end of the Hotel Zone, Navíos puts Mexican-style seafood on a deck over the lagoon. It is worth a look for a date or a meal where the setting matters, but check the journey from your hotel: the location is much farther south than the party centre.

Puerto Madero Cancun: Argentine grill

If your group wants grilled meat and a more formal dinner, Puerto Madero is a Hotel Zone option. It gives you a different menu and pace from the show restaurants above. Look at the current Cancun menu before booking, particularly if a steak dinner will be the main expense of the evening.

Casual seafood and family meals

These choices put seafood or an easy meal ahead of a dress-up night. Check the specific branch before you travel.

El Fish Fritanga: informal Hotel Zone or city-side seafood

El Fish Fritanga has a Hotel Zone branch, another on Avenida Huayacán on the city side of Cancun, and a menu built around fish, shrimp and other seafood dishes. It is a useful counterpoint to the more formal lagoon dinners when you want seafood without making the meal an occasion. Confirm the branch when arranging transport.

El Timón de Cancún: seafood with the family

El Timón has a city-side branch as well as a Hotel Zone location. Its seafood menu and family facilities make the city-side restaurant one to consider with children or a larger group. Check which branch suits your route and the current menu before you set out.

Los de Pescado: fish and shrimp tacos

For a quick, casual meal, Los de Pescado has several Cancun branches and focuses on fish and shrimp tacos, burritos and ceviche. Choose the branch that fits your plans; this is a different outing from a long waterfront dinner.

Downtown and city-side meals

Go beyond the beach strip for a traditional Mexican dinner, an easy breakfast or a simple taco stop. These are different parts of the city, so pick the restaurant before arranging the ride.

La Parrilla Yaxchilán: a Mexican dinner

La Parrilla’s Yaxchilán restaurant is a Downtown choice for Mexican dishes in a lively, traditional setting. It may suit a group wanting a full dinner rather than a quick stop. If the music matters to you, check the current programme when reserving.

Tacos Rigo Palenque: an everyday taco meal

Tacos Rigo’s Palenque branch is a practical city-side choice when tacos matter more than a view or a show. It also has a Hotel Zone branch, so name the location you intend to visit. Use its current menu to compare the total with a resort or Hotel Zone dinner.

Marakame Xpuhil: breakfast or a slower meal

Marakame’s Xpuhil location offers breakfast, meals later in the day and a garden-like setting away from the beach strip. When I lived just a few streets away several years ago, it used to be one of my favourites. It can work when you want to take your time over brunch or dinner. Check the current menu and whether an event changes the atmosphere on your chosen day.

Café Nader: breakfast in the city

Café Nader’s original Avenida Nader branch is an alternative to a resort breakfast or a long dinner. Think coffee, fresh bread and a straightforward meal in the city. There are several branches, so check the address before you go.

Best Italian food in Cancun

For Italian food, decide whether you want an established Downtown dinner or a Hotel Zone table with a lagoon view. Neither choice requires a long detour if you match the location to your plans.

La Dolce Vita: a Downtown Italian dinner

La Dolce Vita on Avenida Cobá has served Italian food in Cancun for decades, with homemade pasta, fish and other dishes on its current menu. It suits a meal where the restaurant and conversation are the main event. Check the menu and reserve if you are travelling across town for dinner.

Cenacolo: Italian food beside the lagoon

Cenacolo has a Plaza La Isla restaurant in the Hotel Zone and another at Marina Puerto Cancún. Choose the branch for the part of town you will be in; Plaza La Isla puts a lagoon view alongside an Italian dinner. Confirm the exact branch when booking.

Best Chinese food in Cancun

Chinese food spans very different outings here, from a city restaurant to a Hotel Zone meal or a resort dinner farther north. The setting and journey may matter as much as the dishes.

DAO: contemporary Chinese dining north of the Hotel Zone

DAO at Garza Blanca Cancun offers contemporary Chinese dishes including Peking duck, dim sum and wok-cooked noodles in an upscale resort setting. The resort is north of the main Hotel Zone, so check the journey and confirm whether non-guests can book a table before making plans.

Hong Kong Restaurante: Chinese food at Plaza Chinatown

Hong Kong Restaurante is at Plaza Chinatown between Avenida Xcaret and Avenida Labná in the city. It is an option when you want a Chinese meal away from the resort strip, with room to make the restaurant the main stop rather than a quick takeaway.

China Girl: Chinese food near Kabah Park

China Girl’s Cancun restaurant is by Kabah Park, close to Avenida Kabah. Its Chinese menu offers another city-side sit-down choice. Check the current menu and pinpoint the entrance before setting off.

Restaurante Chino: a Hotel Zone option

Restaurante Chino is at El Parián near km 8.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán. It gives you a Chinese-food option in the Hotel Zone without a trip into the city. Confirm the current menu and opening times before going.

Best Indian food in Cancun

Indian food is another case where the experience can change considerably by venue. Check the actual menu and whether you want a full night out or a straightforward meal.

Bombay Cancun: Indian food and a lounge evening

Bombay is in the Hotel Zone at km 14.7 and presents itself as an Indian restaurant with a supper-club and shisha-lounge setting. It makes sense for a longer evening with drinks as well as dinner. Check the food menu and atmosphere before reserving.

Patravali: Indian food on Bonampak

Patravali is at Plaza Kun on Avenida Bonampak, with Indian dishes such as chicken tikka masala and naan on its menu. It is a city-side sit-down option when you want Indian food without the Hotel Zone lounge setting. Check the current menu before heading out.

Taste of India Cancun: a city-side meal or takeaway

Taste of India lists dishes such as dal, paneer and chicken tikka masala at its Bonampak address, along with takeaway and delivery options. It’s the only Indian restaurant I know in Cancun that does onion bhajis. My favourite! They aren’t on the menu, but if you ask, they’ll make them. It is a more practical choice when the food matters more than a show or a view. Confirm its current menu and dine-in arrangements directly.

Sports diners and places to watch a game

If the match is the main event, check that your chosen branch will show it, especially when several games are on at once.

La Taberna de los Amigos: a local sports-bar choice

La Taberna describes itself as a Cancun sports bar and lists two branches: Avenida del Sol and Malecón Américas. Choose whichever is easier for your trip, and ask that branch about the game you want to watch. It is a different setting from the Hotel Zone party bars.

Hooters: wings and sports in the Hotel Zone or city

Hooters Cancun lists branches at Party Center and Plaza La Isla in the Hotel Zone, plus Malecón Américas in the city. It is a familiar choice for wings, beer and televised sport. Pick the branch that suits your hotel or evening route, then confirm the game schedule.

Twin Peaks: sports-bar dining at Malecón Américas

Twin Peaks Cancun is on Avenida Bonampak at Malecón Américas. Its menu covers American sports-bar food, and the brand centres on watching live games over drinks. Check the event you want to see and the current menu before heading over.

Budget and practical fit

Think in terms of a casual meal, a comfortable sit-down dinner or a bigger occasion, then check current menus instead of relying on an old price list. Drinks, service, transport and any cover or minimum spend can change the total. Ask about anything unclear before you order.

For a family, check the atmosphere and meal time as well as the menu. For a group, confirm the reservation rules, seating and how the bill will be handled. For dietary needs, contact the restaurant directly; a menu description alone may not answer the question that matters to you.

A waterfront table or a performance may be worth paying for if that is why you are going out. If you mostly want a good meal and easy conversation, there is no reason to pay for an elaborate setting you will not enjoy.

Before you book

  • Check the current menu, opening times, booking terms and exact address with the restaurant.
  • Reserve a popular dinner time or a table for a group in advance.
  • Plan the return journey as well as the outward trip. Ask about the taxi fare before getting in, or check the bus route if you intend to use it.
  • Look at the bill for a service charge before adding a tip.

If you have already paid for resort dining, there is no obligation to eat out every night. Pick a meal that gives you something different, whether that is a particular dish, a different part of Cancun or simply a change of scene.

The bottom line

Choose the area, then the kind of evening, then a total budget you are comfortable with. Use the restaurant’s current information to make the final call. A place can be excellent for a lively group and wrong for a quiet dinner; the best restaurant in Cancun is the one that fits your night.
