Christmas in Cancun

Christmas in Cancun swaps winter coats for beach clothes, but there is still plenty of Christmas spirit. You can spend the day by the Caribbean, have a special dinner at your hotel and experience some of the Mexican traditions that make this time of year different from Christmas back home.

The important thing to understand is that Christmas Eve matters here. Many Mexican families have their main celebration late on 24 December, known as Nochebuena. Christmas Day is still 25 December, so check which evening your hotel or restaurant is celebrating before making plans.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Cancun

24 December: Nochebuena

For many Cancunenses, Christmas Eve is the big family occasion. The meal can be late, with celebrations continuing into Christmas morning. If you are used to an early dinner followed by an early night, the timing may come as a surprise!

One year we invited a Mexican friend over for Christmas Dinner. We had a bit of a shock when he knocked at the door at 8pm on Christmas Eve, wearing a Santa Hat and carrying a bottle of Tequila!

As a visitor, you can keep the evening as simple or as festive as you like. Reserve a restaurant, join your hotel’s dinner or eat early and enjoy a quieter night. If you would like to attend Mass, ask the church directly about its Christmas services and language. Do not assume every service starts at midnight.

25 December: Christmas Day

A slow breakfast, some presents and a few hours by the pool can make a very enjoyable Christmas. Leave yourself time to enjoy where you are rather than filling the whole day with appointments.

Cancun does not simply shut down for Christmas, but opening hours are specific to each business. A restaurant’s normal weekly schedule is not enough to confirm Christmas lunch, and a hotel restaurant may be restricted to guests or reservations. Check the exact date and service you want.

Choosing a hotel and planning Christmas dinner

Your hotel will shape much of your Christmas experience. A family resort, an adults-only property and a small downtown hotel offer very different holidays. Start with who you are travelling with, the atmosphere you want and how much time you intend to spend at the hotel. Our Cancun hotels overview helps you compare the options.

What to ask an all-inclusive resort

All-inclusive does not answer every question about Christmas. Before you pay, ask:

  • Is the Christmas Eve or Christmas Day meal included in this exact room rate?
  • Is there a compulsory gala charge, an optional upgrade or a restaurant reservation to make?
  • Which restaurants will be serving, at what time, and is there an earlier sitting for children?
  • Can the kitchen accommodate your dietary needs, and is there a dress code?
  • If a heated pool matters to you, which pool is heated and will it be operating during your stay?

Get the answers for your travel dates. A photograph of last year’s Santa visit or festive buffet does not confirm what will happen this year.

Christmas dinner outside your hotel

You do not have to eat at a resort. A meal out can be a lovely part of Christmas, particularly if you would rather choose a Mexican restaurant than recreate dinner at home. Browse our Cancun restaurant recommendations, then contact your chosen venue about its holiday arrangements.

Confirm the menu, total price, deposit, children’s arrangements and whether drinks are included. Ask whether it is a set festive menu or the usual menu. If turkey and all the trimmings are important to you, check the actual dishes rather than relying on the words “Christmas dinner”.

Mexican seasonal food can include turkey, bacalao, tamales, buñuelos and warm fruit ponche. Traditions vary between families and regions, and those dishes will not all appear on every Cancun menu.

Things to do in Cancun over Christmas

Enjoy a beach day or a relaxed family outing

A Christmas beach visit needs very little organising. Take shade, water and sun protection, and choose your swimming plans around the day’s conditions. For access points and the differences between beaches, see Cancun beaches.

Families may prefer a short outing to a full day away from the hotel. Cancun with kids includes ideas for different ages and alternatives when the weather changes. Keep a backup activity in mind, especially if the children are counting on swimming.

Take a tour, with some flexibility

Christmas can be a good opportunity to explore beyond your resort. Compare archaeological trips, parks, island outings and shorter activities in Cancun Tours. Confirm that your chosen departure operates on your exact date, where pickup takes place and when you will get back. A full-day trip is an awkward fit with an early Christmas dinner reservation.

Xcaret’s official information states that the park opens daily, including holidays. It also describes posadas before Christmas, although the exact dates and times should be checked for your visit. If you are choosing between the different parks, our Xcaret parks comparison explains their main differences. Do not assume all parks or tours follow Xcaret’s schedule.

Keep boat trips away from your final available day where possible. Wind and sea conditions can affect departures, so a little flexibility gives you more options if plans change.

Look for local decorations and seasonal events

A walk to see the decorations or a public festive event can add something different to a beach holiday. Check the current announcements from Benito Juárez Municipality for downtown celebrations and ask your hotel about transport and the return journey.

Public programmes change each year. Check the event date, location and admission arrangements before setting off, particularly if you have found an old Christmas listing online. Hotels’ private activities should be checked separately.

What is the weather like at Christmas?

December is warm by most visitors’ standards, with an average high of 84.9°F (29.4°C) and average low of 69.8°F (21°C). Those are monthly climate averages, not a forecast for Christmas week.

You can have lovely beach weather, but rain and cooler spells are possible. North fronts can bring wind and make a poolside or boat day feel quite different from a sheltered afternoon in the sun. Pack swimwear and light clothes, plus a light layer for breezy evenings and a rain jacket for outings. See Cancun weather in December for the fuller picture.

Decide whether to swim by looking at the sea and following lifeguards’ instructions and beach flags. A sunny sky does not mean calm water. Pool temperature also varies, particularly at hotels without heating, so confirm the facilities if warm swimming water is a priority.

Mexican Christmas traditions you may encounter

Posadas, piñatas and nativity scenes

Posadas traditionally run from 16 to 24 December. Their religious origins recall Mary and Joseph looking for lodging, often with songs, followed by food and piñatas. Today’s celebrations vary, and some are family, neighbourhood or workplace gatherings rather than public events.

If you are invited, it is a nice opportunity to enjoy a Mexican Christmas tradition. If you are looking for something open to visitors, check a published programme or ask your hotel. Do not assume a private party is a public attraction.

You may also see nacimientos, or nativity scenes, alongside Christmas trees and decorations. Christmas here combines Mexican traditions with the familiar festive touches that international visitors bring with them.

Three Kings Day is on 6 January

Three Kings Day, Día de Reyes, follows Christmas on 6 January. Families may exchange presents and share rosca de reyes, the ring-shaped sweet bread decorated with candied fruit. Some families focus on Christmas gifts, some on Reyes, and some celebrate both.

If your holiday extends into January, look for rosca in bakeries. It is a separate celebration from Christmas Day. Our Mexican events in Cancun overview covers Reyes and other celebrations through the year.

Bookings, transport and your Christmas budget

Christmas through New Year is a busy, expensive period in Cancun. I would sort out the hotel and flights first, then the meal or outing you would be disappointed to miss. Leave the rest of the holiday with some room to breathe.

  • Compare the whole stay: Include meals, festive supplements, transfers and the room arrangements your family needs.
  • Try different dates: If Christmas Day itself is not essential, compare an earlier December stay with Christmas week rather than assuming all December prices are similar.
  • Plan the journey home: Arrange the return from a special dinner or event as carefully as the outward trip. Ask your hotel or transport provider about the timing for your exact location.
  • Avoid a tightly packed arrival day: Leave a comfortable gap between landing, reaching your hotel and a prepaid festive dinner.
  • Read the terms: Check payment deadlines and the booking’s change and cancellation conditions before paying.

For a family trip, decide how you want to handle presents before you travel. A few small gifts are easier to carry than a suitcase full of surprises, and a relaxed Christmas morning can be just as memorable as a big organised event.

Christmas in Cancun questions

Is Cancun a good place to spend Christmas?

Yes, if you like the idea of a warm-weather Christmas with beaches, hotel time and meals out. You will get more from it if you are comfortable with peak-season prices and flexible about the weather. Choose your hotel carefully, as its atmosphere will be a big part of your stay.

Can you go to the beach on Christmas Day?

Yes. Plan around the day’s wind, sea conditions and beach flags. Bring what you need rather than assuming every nearby shop, rental or food service will keep its normal hours.

Do Mexicans celebrate Christmas on 24 or 25 December?

Christmas Day is 25 December. Many families hold their main meal and celebration on Christmas Eve, 24 December, with festivities continuing into the next day.

Will my hotel have Santa, a Christmas show or a special dinner?

Ask the hotel for its programme for your travel year and whether each activity is included in your booking. Arrangements differ between properties, and a previous year’s programme is not confirmation for your stay.
